    Hi Slo,

Yeah, you can do it yourself if you have a PC with a sound card. Go to AVS forum and go to the front page of the Movies with waterfalls section. You can download the software right there. There are some set-up suggestions at the front too. Just run your PC's line out back to the line in and you'll get results. It is somewhat tedious to set up (kinda high learning curve).

I thought the DVD would come in the mail yesterday, but it didn't. Should be in tomorrow.

    Hi Slo,

Here is the spectrum off of SD DVD of the first part at around 4:57:

    Eragon.jpg

THere's not too much energy there, a little at 10 Hz, but more in the 35-60 Hz range. The DTS MA version will be considerably hotter, so yeah it could be bottoming your sub if it's rally cranked up.

    SG: thanks for doing that!

so...the room is not making the noise, both the conquest and the danley make that noise...i think it must be the preamp clipping.

Keek in mind some movies go into sub bass regions like War of the worlds chapter 13. I broke the cone off a Dayton Titanic III. If you can turn on a subsonic filter you may be in bussiness. My sub also over travels 30-40 hz or so. time to back off a notch if the filter does not cure your ills.

i got this amp driving the danley, it does not have subsonic filtering...
    http://www.faceaudio.com/product3,4.html

it might overdrive the danley...but will it be possible for the conquest to be overdriven too?

backing off a few notches helps...

Some sound tracks in DTS are dangerous. It may have a warning on the case like WOW has. Nearly any sub may fail at subsonic reagions.

It's possible the pre is clipping before the sub is. (so the sub is accurately reproducing the clipped signal it is receiving.)

    Just a thought.

mike, you might be right that the avp is clipping. i talked to a co-worker who has lots of experience with big auto subs/amps and he thinks that is the symptom of avp running out of steam. i will up the gain on the amp driving the sub and see how that goes...

Yeah I was refering to you. I thought you were going to get an SPL meter?

i got the SPL meter, set it to dBC and kept it on thru the whole rambo movie, some where in the movie, it reached 107.1dB - the AVP's volume control @ 0dB

the spl meter has data logging capability and peak hold...i set it to peak hold and thats what it peaked somewhere in the movie. thruout the movie, its somewhere between 80-90+dB.

this is the 1st time i'm putting a spl meter to it

with rambo@0dB on the avp - max is ~107dB

    watching mr/mrs smith @-5dB

Calibrate everything at 75dbs, sub at 72dbs. Usually this is at -10 on the AVRs MV, but with separate amps, the gain can get wonky (I calibrate at 75dbs at -25). Reference level is 85dbs average with 20db peaks above 120hz and 30db peaks in the LFE range. With your subs, you should be seeing close to reference level peaks, I do (115db), without clipping. If calibrated correctly and you're not getting there, then it's probably cancellation issues in your square room.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers

i measured the output of each speaker at listening position, audyssey puts all of them right at 75dB@0dB on the volume knob

looks like the PS3 is putting out a really high signal?

Yes, The PS3 amps there signal. It about blows you away when switching input. It is probably the same volume increase as commercials.

The way around that is to get an Avia or DVE (digital video essentials) disk. DVE is available in an HD version, I am not sure about Avia...

Anyway - they have test tones that are calibrated so you set your preamp to 0db and calibrate to 75db (with DVE) or 85db (with Avia) and your system will be calibrated to reference level.

Dolby reference level is (roughly) 85db (average volume) per channel with 105db peaks. The sub (when all speakers are set to small) will be required to output 115db peaks. DTS tracks are often 5-10db hot from these peak averages...

Since the test tones are run from a DVD, they take your entire system into account when setting the levels. I would say DVE or Avaya is required to truely calibrate a system. On either disk there is alot of information that will help calibrate and set up your display as well.
