My (for the lack of a better word I'll call him Painter ) is almost done with my room but I have a problem. The wall where he pulled down cabinets had some drywall damage from the tear down. So he did a little joint compound action to smooth out the divots. BUT now when the wall is painted these compunded spots are flat where I need them to have the same sheen as the rest of the wall. It's so important because a ton of light will be focused on this wall. What can I ( meaning He) do to get the sheen consistent?

(You can see the flat spots in the photo near the picture on the right (inside) and a couple of other spots.)

I have matched the texture of the wall with joint compound and a wet sponge.

apply joint compound, ley dry a little and apply sponge and pull it directly away from wall do this until it matches the texture of the original wall.

    let dry and paint

+1 to above. It may take a couple of attempts to match it well, but definitely your best option.

I hate when that happens, but it always does. You have sand those spots baby **** smooth then proceed to scuff the entire wall with a rough sand paper, like 60 grit, VERY well. Then you have to start all over with the finish, ie a good primer and al least 2 finish coats. Tint the primer and the finish coats will cover quicker.

    Good luck...

Crap. This needs to be finished today. I don't have time to do the whole wall. Do you really think some more compound and the sponge will work?

Are you talking the texture or the paint?

If it's texture, it'll need to be texture matched. If the paint has flatter gloss spots where the now patches are, the patches will need to be primed, something a painter should've known.

I learned about priming sheetrock and joint compound the hard way.

Wow! Problem solved! Thanks!:D Actually, the art will end up covering a big portion BUT..not enough. I may have to go larger with the art work. Here's my alternative. I had counted them out because the scale was too large but....

Looking at the pic, I'd say the patches need to be redone, sanded and then primed.

Texture. It was all painted new with this color. I thought that it was just that the compound was absorbing the paint differently or something.....

Darla, the underlying coats of paint have a different surface finish than the cover. The paint develops a shell. Unless you do the whole wall, you will still have the same problem.

As far as it getting done today, it can be done, it'll just be a long day. Sorry ,but it B's like that sometimes...

My 'painter' just showed up and said it just needed another coat. I called my real painter (who was unavailable over the weekend) and he said he would try to come by tomorrow to fix it.

Paying these painters to do it right is eating into your profit, huh?

It's tough to rely on other "professionals" when your business and image are on the line.

It's a hard lesson, but if you're gonna take on small jobs like this one, you gotta do all of the work yourself.

Hey there, another way to fix it is go to your local Home Depot or Lowes, go to the paint section and either ask or look for "spray on texture". It comes with several tips for different textures.

yes i have done it successfully. you need to feather it. also the dark coat will show up any defects much more.

    it's trail and error

Sounds like the underlying problem was that the painters did not put a coat of primer on top of the joint compound. I've seen this many times. The joint compound is much more porous than the normal sheet rock and it drys out the paint faster.

I always put a coat of Zinwell primer on the spackle/ joint compound before painting. You will almost always need 2 coats of paint on top of the primer, but it eventually has the same texture.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

That could be, and if it is, the patch spots will need to be primed.

Like what was already said, those compounded spots gotta be sanded smooth and as level with the surrounding wall as possible. Then it's gotta get roughed up a bit so the paint will stick. Otherwise, the giant smooth spots are going to reflect the light differently and on a dark wall like that, they will stand out.

Honestly if it was me, I wouldn't have used joint compound unless there was a hole in the wall. If it was just some missing paper, I would have oversprayed with a sandable primer, blocked it down and then done the whole wall in primer and then two color coats.
