Yep...

I just pushed my mighty SVS sub driver beyonds its limits.:( And with a little 400 watt Rythmik amp at that..:mad::mad:

Over excursion killed what was a great sub.

But now the question. What to replace it with? People rave about the Dayton 15" Titanic III. Is there anything else out there in the $200-$300 range 15"?

Bass lovers opinions needed,,,,,,,

    Seriously? You've never heard of the Tempest, Shiva, etc drivers from Adire audio? I thought you were a big DIY'er ;) They were the staple drivers of DIY'ers for years. Adire has since gone out of business but I believe they have a hand in these new drivers. I know the XBL^2 technology was Adire's.

    The sub was a 12.1 driver (TC sounds design), so it was getting pretty old and worn. The spider coils just couldnt handle it anymore.

    Get the Tempest 2 pack and build a BIG sealed sub.

    This is from memory of over 10 years ago.

    The original tempest was a large(7 ft3) vented box lover tuned to around 20 Hz.

    This 2 pack tempest deal linked appears to have specs that do favor a sealed box.

    I'd still build a box with a pluggable port to try vented and sealed before deciding. I've got a feeling vented is going to hit harder. Since you blew your original sub, this might be a good direction to head in.

    * Size: 15 inch
    * Rec. Sealed Box Dims: 0.75 - 1.50 cu.ft.
    * Rec. Ported Box Dims: 1.50 - 2.00 cu.ft.
    * Sensitivity: 92 dB
    * Frequency Response: 10-150 Hz
    * Recommended RMS Power: 350W
    * Peak Power Handling: 700W
    * Impedance: dual 4 ohms

    Insanely sensitive for such a large sub, dual 4 ohm voice coils can be wired to present a 2 ohm load and handles at least 350 watts RMS. That will go all day long, play clean as a whistle and shake your fillings loose too.

    I'd say go with the SR124 but, gotta for over extra cash for that. Ain't cheap but it's more than enough subwoofer.

    You all have given me alot of options..thanks...

    I think .. the best bang for my buck is the Tempest-X.

    Looking at both specs. The X has a Fs of 18 and seems to move alittle more air. Although the Q's are alittle lower on the Shiva-X subs, I think for my inclosure the X would work better. Agreed? Unless I'm thinking backwards....:o

    Probably will be between the Dayton and the Tempest.

    Thats my thoughts. Xmax on Dayton is only 20mm, Tempest has Xmax os 27mm. Moving more air.

    The coil for the Tempest (adding both coils), is 1.8Le , the Dayton has 2.57 Le, which would seem harder to control xover wise.

    but the Dayton does seem a tad more efficient. And I am comfortable with Partsexpress and Dayton products.

    The Shiva-X might be alittle out of my range, after shipping and all.

    Don't order the Tempest-X over the Tempest without running it through a box plotter. The specs look like they'll work find in ported, but don't use guesswork.

    I say this because the box you have now is almost a perfect fit to the original Tempest.

    That A350 from Rythmik has multiple settings for its subsonic filter ( They call it a rumble / extension filter ) as well as being able to be defeated . Was yours defeated ?

    Properly adjusted for the design of your enclosure/subwoofer combination...taking into consideration box tuning to know where your particular setup @ what freq the sub would become unloaded/uncontrolled and kick the bucket due to overexcursion.

    Their explaination of their own setup...

    " Next add our high end plate amplifiers with custom bass extension controls. Not only does this give you greater control and flexibility, it also dramatically increases dynamics and maximum output. The risk of bottoming the driver is significantly reduced. "

    " A defeatable extension filter with separate frequency and damping control. The extension filter can be bypass with 14 Hz and high damping setting. Frequency is adjustable between 14, 20 and 28 Hz. Damping factor is adjustable between high damping (Q=0.6, or bessel filter), medium damping (Q=1.07, or 1.5 dB boost Chebyshev), low damping (Q=1.33, or 3 dB boost Chebyshev). There are a total of 9 settings available. You can use this filter to boost the bottom end or do minor correction for room response. In case you don't know, our competitor has a 6 dB boost at 30 Hz which cannot be switched off. To disable it, you have to unmount the circuit board and do some soldering, voiding the warranty if there is one. Incorrect rumble filter not only makes the bass sound boomy, it can even bottom out the woofer. "

    Be careful with your new sub driver as well....adjust your amp so it wont happen again.

    This one http://www.creativesound.ca/details.php?model=SDX15 aint bad for the price. And it fits your 200 to 300 range :)

    Shadow, my amp was set to 20hz-medium.

    It wasnt because of the driver or the amp. It was because of me...

    I was fooling around with level settings, and paused the movie on a certain spot to listen and relisten and make adjustments. I did a multiple of stupid things, raising the gain on the Rythmik amp , to get peak output w/out distortion and ASSuming that I was raising the level of the center channel, to adjust for imbalance.

    Started playing the movie and WWWAAAMMMOOO.. It really rocked the house for a good 2 seconds, before I could get to it.

    Anyways... OOOOOPPSSS!!.. My bad, now I just have to replace and have more fun callibrating a new sub.

    That seems really big for a 12. was that what you were using for the SVS driver?

    What size port is it? unless it's a 6" port it's likely too small for a 15" driver.

    driver regardless of price. I also bought a few B-1 bass controls from them....very fast shipping and good service....I would buy from them again.

    It is a 4" port, which is too small for a 15" driver, but that is an easy fix with PartsExp.
