That seems really big for a 12. was that what you were using for the SVS driver?

What size port is it? unless it's a 6" port it's likely too small for a 15" driver.

Another thing is, I built the enclosure with the intent of putting the SVS in the smaller 3ft3 enclosure, that I built and putting a larger driver in the big tower. But never got around to doing it until now.

    I call it a tower, 18"D x 17"W x 44.5"H.

Shadow, my amp was set to 20hz-medium.

It wasnt because of the driver or the amp. It was because of me...

I was fooling around with level settings, and paused the movie on a certain spot to listen and relisten and make adjustments. I did a multiple of stupid things, raising the gain on the Rythmik amp , to get peak output w/out distortion and ASSuming that I was raising the level of the center channel, to adjust for imbalance.

Started playing the movie and WWWAAAMMMOOO.. It really rocked the house for a good 2 seconds, before I could get to it.

Anyways... OOOOOPPSSS!!.. My bad, now I just have to replace and have more fun callibrating a new sub.

Haha....dont feel bad...you are not alone. I was at a buddies house and we had just finished a pair of TC Sounds TC-2000 passive radiator designs using TC Sounds own 15" passive radiators ( 6 Cu Ft each cabinet ...1 TC-2000 and 2 TC VMP's per cabinet....tuned to approx 20Hz using different washer counts on the PR's )

Had his place ROCKING to the flick Live Free or Die Hard......the spot where the bad dude falls down the grinder...some serious LFE there....especially on Blu Ray in DTS-HDMA...and after all the calibrations had been done....you could feel the blasts kicking your chest in :)

Well he paused it and went to adjust the B-1's main level a LITTLE bit I told him ...just to push the subs even more to see what they were really capable of...and he didnt realize the little bit he chose was like 5 or 6 clicks on the B-1 on the left sub.

He undid the pause and you should have heard that TC bottom...it cold formed the aluminum cone instantly...he lunged for the B-1 but it was too late. Funny thing is...the TC took it in stride...it still sounded perfect when adjusted back where it was calibrated at.

He replaced the driver with another TC and just gave me the cold formed one to experiment with....I put it in a little cheap but well braced 2 Cu Ft sealed enclosure and it will take the full output of a bridged RF2000 ( 1,200 watts into 4 ohms ) sounding absolutely wonderful :) Basically the cold forming of the cone raised the voice coil approx 1/8" ....I pulled the motor to see the condition of the VC....it was no different then one of my own TC-2000 top assy's. Thats got to be one of the toughest VC formers I have ever seen.

Even though the vc is positioned a tiny bit higher...it still functions normally ( Measures no differently then my driver ) ...amazing. I will take a shot of the driver in a few minutes. :)

I just snapped these pics.....the 3 of the sub alone are the pooched cold formed TC-2000....the one pic with the gear is what that TC-2000 driver SHOULD look like :p

I just bought that cheap little 2 Cu Ft carpeted enclosure ( I did brace the hell out of it though...prob used up .5 Cu Ft. in bracing alone...along with the driver the actual useable area inside is around 1.4 Cu Ft. taking into account the acousta fiber fill as well ) to test out the driver.

The TC-2000 in the pic with the gear is in a very nice 3 Cu Ft sealed enclosure from PE http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=302-820

Tempest - X is the one I'm jumping on...

I was very close to getting the Creative Sound, but the specs on the T-X compared to the CS does not justify the extra $100

And I guess I can always cut a fellow Polkie a geat deal if the T-X doesnt work out.

Thanks for all the help fellows..

Well. It came in last night. This driver is big and heavy, 36lbs. The output is as much or more than the 2 12's I had running before. I didnt measure it yet, but just by listening to it, I can tell, the sub clearly out performs the SVS (in my enviroment). It could be the fact that the Tempst was built to enjoy alot of airspace, or it could be because of the increase in size. Reguardless of the reason, there is no more need for 2 subs. The Dayton 12 will be either sold or given to my cousin for his, starter surround system.

Like I said earlier, the driver is heavy. I have it down firing, screwed onto a single 5/8 partical board. I will double the bottom of the cabinet. No "chuffing" from the 4" port, but I have not pushed the sub hard yet. Didnt realy have to. Being the driver is bigger the amp doesnt have to drive the woofer as hard to produce deep low bass.

I was dissapointed that the SVS was destroyed due to my mistake, but things happen for a reason and I am now even more satisfied with the new driver. The SVS had to really move to produce the bass I wanted, with the new 15" driver, everything moves and sounds alot smoother now.

Extreme testing will come in the near future. Transformers and Beowolf, will be the tester.

I also plan to run the REW, to see the overall performance. But just by listening, I am pleased........

Well guys, I have been fooling with this damn sub for over a week now, trying to get it right.

My first project was 6.5ft^3 ported, tuned to 18.5hz. After running the sub for awhile, I discovered a major spike @ ~ 38hz. I emailed DIYcables, asking what was the optimun size enclosure for the Tempest. My calculations came out to ~ 9ft^3. Too big for what I wanted to build. DIYcables advised me, if i were not going to build such a large enclosure, that I should stuff it and seal it. So thats what I did. 6.5ft^3 stuffed and sealed. On paper (WINisd), it specs out just fine. But after running REW room EQ, the 38hz spike was still present.

Anyways, the output is amazing. Watched Cloverfield and was amazed (even with the +/- 4db ~38hz).

I also took a few shots of the size difference between the Tempest and the SVS.

.....I am continue to work on the 38hz spike, trying to avoid a sub Eq.

P.S. Pay no attention to the date on the pics. Cam was not set.

    No problem:)

I use the rat Shack meter. REW from TheTheatershack, has a pretty accurate peice of software that installs with REW to compinsate for the RS meter's inacuracy down in the lower HZ region.

Remember that the SVS driver was in the exact same inclosure. In the exact same spot in the room. There was no spike @ 38hz with the svs. So I know its the Tempest.

But just for the record. The Tempest way outperforms the SVS. (The older SVS driver, at least)

You can tell if it is a room induced problem or the sub itself by doing a nearfield measurement of the sub.Placing the meter within a few inches of the driver while doing the measurement will greatly reduce or eliminate any room modes in the measured respone. This is best done away from room corners. If the peak still exists then it is the sub not the room.

Cant change anything in the room (WAF), so I'll just have to deal with it another way.

I had it front firing at a 2nd and 3rd try, but found down firing to be the best.

1st: Down firing, ported. Sound wqas a tad floppy.
2nd: Front firing, ported. Localized floppyness
3rd: Front firing, sealed. Better, tighter sub. But still localized.
4th: (Final) Down firing, sealed. Best.

Can you believe, the Tempest's optimal enclosure is 10-12ft^3?

OUCH!!..Talk about theater sub. They ment it literaly.

And I thought I had an above average size enclosure, thats almost twice the size I have.
