Ran across this while hitting my normal sites when bored. I had just graduated high school in 1984 and I had $900 burning a hole in my pocket. This is really my 2nd car but the one my parents gave me (a beater) I'm not counting because this was the first car I bought with my own money.

1976 VW-Scirocco 1.6L 75bhp (US) 4 cylinder; 4sp with a dbl. barrel Weber carb. Fuel injection wasn't standard until 1977. Car had 112,000 miles on it. I had a lot of fun in that car. Peppy, sporty, nice handling, easy to work on, cool Euro interior (plaid seat stitching) and Italian designed coach work.

Excitingly sensible: Volkswagen Scirocco 1974 – 1992

Automobile sportiness at the Volkswagen Classic stand in Hall 7 at TechnoClassica 2008 in Essen

Wolfsburg, March 26, 2008 - Automobile sportiness is the order of the day at the Volkswagen brand stand in Hall 7: the presentation focuses on the various generations of the Scirocco.

“Scirocco” is the term for a hot wind from the Sahara blowing towards the Mediterranean coast. From 1974, though, Volkswagen offered its customers much more than just hot air with the Scirocco. Like the ground-breaking Golf concept, the Scirocco brought a breath of fresh air to the Wolfsburg model program. In the early 1970s, Volkswagen opened up to new technical philosophies and finally said goodbye to the monoculture of air-cooled engines. Based on the Golf, which went into production in March 1974, Giorgio Giugiaro designed a smart and sporty hatchback body. With its new sports car, initially available as the 85 bhp Scirocco TS, Volkswagen brought pleasure to the hearts of sporty driving enthusiasts everywhere.

Over half a million of the first Scirocco generation were built from 1974 to 1981. There was a wide choice of equipment and engine configurations: the engine range spanned the 1.1-liter 50 bhp model to the 110 bhp version in the GTI. The second generation of the Scirocco followed in 1981. Over 291,000 units of this version were also produced by Karmann until 1992. Unlike the Scirocco I, the successor was created at the Wolfsburg Design Center and was slightly more powerful, with over ten engine variants ranging from the 60 bhp, 1.3-liter model to the 16V, 139 bhp version.

The Volkswagen brand stand at TechnoClassica is showcasing five different Scirocco models. The three from the first generation are:

1982 VW Rabbit 4-spd, 4 door, much like the one shown here.

What a fun car, quick, responsive - not to mention being able to take turns on 3 wheels, I kid you not. I remember taking off the stock 155/80's and putting on 175/70's (13 inch rims) for a wider more agressive stance. ;)

$1300 or so, had right around 80K on it.

I believe it. The Scirocco was based on the Golf/Rabbit platform. Most VW's still slightly lift the inner rear tire during extreme cornering. :D

1975 BMW 2002 with a 2 barrel weber and a 1977 Grey Market 320i that had the same engine as a 2002tii. It was a sleeper and surprised many other V8 cars.

    A black 1984 Buick LeSabre 2 door.

It saved my life when I slid head on into a pole at 40 mph. If I was in a economy car, I would have been done.

If I saw another one in great shape I'd pick it up in a heartbeat.

We did this thread not too long ago, I believe.

'74 Corvette, L-82 350 auto. Bought as a basket case for $2000 in 1986. Actually caught on fire when I was test-driving it  but I bought it anyway because, well, it was a Corvette that I could afford. I spent a year rebuilding it and drove it to school the last day of my junior year in high school. Sold the car in 1997 or 98 (or '99, can't remember but I said 99 the last time we had this discussion) and kinda wish I had it back. I do have some pictures somewhere though I'm not sure it's worth the effort to dig them out- It was black and could've used a paint job.

Well the first car my parents got me was an 82 Pontiac Phoenix. I really enjoyed that car. It died of natural causes after about two years of me beating the crap out of it and it getting cancer.

The first car I bought was an 86 Olds Cutlass Supreme that I Pro Streeted. I don''t have any digital pics of it as I sold it long ago but I will look around.

1988 Ford Tempo 2.3L 5-speed. "The Tempo of Doom"

90 romping, stomping horsepower. Actually wasn't too bad with the stick. I had friends with the same engine in automatic and it was such a dog; always in the wrong gear.

Thing was damn near bullet proof and I don't think I ever got fewer than 31MPG. Why is it that gas was $0.89/gallon in that car, and $3.50/gallon when I'm in a car that gets 20MPG?

Kinda homely car, but I miss it sometimes.

    1987 Ford Ranger S

    slam_ranger.jpg

Still have it. The S stood for Special. It was essentially a fleet model. You start out with a barebones, no amenities Ranger and option the living hell out of it. Only options mine had were A/C and power steering. Previous owner hacked a radio in. Power brakes were standard as well as the hydraulic clutch. Had a 2.0L 4 cylinder with a Japanese branded carburetor on it and a 5 speed manual with overdrive. It's a standard cab shortbed and it was tan. Everywhere. Tan.

Drove the wheels off of it. Previous owner never took it in for recalls. Oil pan gasket came apart and got sucked up by the oil pump. Pump blew, engine spun bearings on top and bottom ends. New engine around 122,000 miles. Truck has 212,000 miles on it now. Not currently running but the engine is getting rebuilt and I'm going to use it as a test mule for a fuel injection system I've been working on building. Gonna make it a show vehicle 'cause it's quite straight and put stereo equipment in it and try to go compete again. Of course it's gonna be decked out with Polk Audio gear.

Eh, It's alright I was feeling nostalgic today after running across the article on the Scirocco. I had forgotten that this exact thread was discussed in September.

Have fun with it or totally ignore it. I'm sure the same question/thread was asked for two entirely different reasons ;)

First car was a 1981 AMC Spirit similar to the one pictured below except it was blue. My grandfather made the deal with me that he would buy me a car if I would sell my motorcycle (he hated them) which was my Sophomore year in HS. I had just traded in my Suzuki GS-250 motorcycle for a Yamaha SECA 900 as I had just turned 16. He wasn't thrilled so he made me the offer and looking back, I shoulda waited to see just WHAT KIND of car he was thinking of BEFORE I gave up the bike! Oh well... It was a good little car but I didn't keep it that long. I went thru 2 motorcycles plus 1 truck and 5 cars before graduating High School.

    1981 Suzuki GS250
    1982 Yamaha SECA 900
    1981 AMC Spirit
    1966 Ford F100 P/U (yanked the inline 6 and dropped in a 351C with a C6 tranny IIRC)
1977 Pontiac Grand Prix....bright red with a white vinyl interior. My pimp mobile.
    1983 Mustang LX 5.0 sedan 5sp
1981 Camaro Z28 (black/gold model with cowl induction, etc)
1984 Mustang GT 5.0 5sp.......bought on my 18th birthday in Oct 1984 and graduated with this car.

I had waaayyy too many vehicles before graduating High School.

My 1st was a '78 Malibu Classic, Dark blue metalic with a black vinyl top, chrome modular wheels. It had a 305 2-barrel with straight dual exhaust and turbo mufflers. It was a sweet ride at the time. I think I bought it in 1987 with about 60-70,000 miles and ran it for about 3 years before I upgraded to a Mustang GT.

Mine was pretty fast. Mine was a German spec. tii engine. It was pretty ballsy for a 70's 2.0 liter. I had to get a waiver because it would not pass emissions. I had a lot of fun with that car. There were a lot of twisty roads where I lived to play on back then.
