Favre to retire

Not a Greenbay fan since I'm a die hard Bears fan, but this is the end of the career of the greatest QB in a long time. I always had great respect for Brett's talent and it just won't be the same when the Bears and Packers play next season.

Also not a GB fan but Favre certainly made his mark and earned a lot of respect.

I wish he had retired 3-4 years ago so he truly could have gone out without having those few horrible years (last year excluded).
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Its hard enough to be a great quarterback in the NFL ( Which he is/was ) ....but to play for as long as he did ...at the level of competence he played at...and to take as many sacks as he did and still not miss games and be there ready at kickoff time in and time out is truely an achievement.

When he played against the Raiders after his dads passing from a heart attack and actually won the game, I cant even think of words to describe it....the man was a rock and kicked **** and took names in his career.

As a diehard GB fan, it's sad to see him retire. He had a great career, and is an outstanding athlete and person. With that said, it's also good that now GB can move on and find a new QB to lead the team.

It was speculated earlier in the week that he planned to retire. The news on the wire right now comes from his agent and I guess it won't be "final" until the team holds a press conference.

This is his first retirement so I'm not sure what your comment means

Every year we hear the speculation that he will or will not retire. It goes on and on. Yesterday his agent said he believed Farve would be back. Today ESPN said Farve left a phone message with Chis Mortensen stating he would retire. I don't care one way or another.

Moss signed with another team yesterday, maybe what put Favre over the edge to retire. BTW, it's official Green Bay has confirmed it for those that doubt it.

Not a GB fan, but come on, he has been one of the greatest athletes of the last 2 decades. In my mind the Micheal Jordan or Tiger Woods of Football. Sometimes you have to look at the individual athlete and not just the sport.

Great talent but did a lot of stupid crap. Seemed like a stand up guy and wasn't a huge prima donna like others.

Love him or hate him, if your team was up by less than 7 with 2 minutes left and he had the ball you knew chances are your team was going home as losers. You gotta respect the quarterbacks you hated playing against.

The Bears should hire him or Bledsoe to coach Grossman. I'm still reeling on that decision.

Brett Favre deserves all the praise he gets. As a Bears fan I've seen him dismantle us too many times. Also agree that he seemed to be a down to earth guy.

I've been watching him since I was 7 years old.

It is indeed a sad day...but I think Arron Rodgers (I spelt that wrong...) will do a great job with a little more experience!

Is anybody else sick and F-ing tired of this guy now. I have been a Favre fan since I can remember, but the latest goings on make me sick. The way that sports personalities (not just him) flip flop and drag the fans, teammates and league through this is terrible. The organization is getting dragged through the mud for moving on and the commissioner was going to rule on this? WHY?!?!?!?!?! HE RETIRED - filed formal paperwork and everything. Green Bay should pay him his salary as agreed and he should not be eligible to play again until that contract expires.

Well, some say it's not so much Favre as the Packers demanding he make a decision in March rather than giving him a reasonable amount of time.

March is too close to the end of the season - if they would have asked Brett to decide by June, which would have been plenty of time to adjust to Aaron Rodgers, this whole thing could have been averted.

You have to blame the Packers management for all the fuzz here. If they don't want him, release him. It's that simple. Brett is doing the right thing by going to camp and forcing GB to either p(l)ay, trade or release him. It's not their right to tell him he is done playing (well, they could, but I don't see them paying him 13mil to sit on the sidelines).

I'm bummed that I will miss the Favre led Vikes take on the Pack... :(

It's always easier to blame the establishment than the individua, usually anyways. I'd agree that the Packers share most of the blame, but seriously when the guy tells you he's quitting you've got to move on and make plans to play without him, and then right before the season he wants to come back - well now all of your plans are out the window.

But you don't want to release him, because you don't want the Vikings with Brett Favre to beat you in the playoffs.

I'm not saying they're right, but you gotta look at it from both sides

Kinda moot since nobody is expecting Packers to go very far in a few years, expect the die hard fans and the management.

I really don't think this is a situation where you'd say "If you aren't here, you wouldn't understand," but based on a lot of the commentary I have seen, both here and elsewhere, it almost fits.

The simple fact of the matter is that this is a dick measuring show. Ted Thompson (Packers GM) showed up from Seattle and decided he was the big dick in town and wanted Favre gone. Up here, this is something we have known since the second he got to town. I can only imagine how it felt to actually be inside of the organization when Thompson arrived. Being privy to Packer's writers up here, we do get some good insight.

Favre is a grown man who plays football for a living. I'm not going to fault him for retiring and un-retiring. He wants to play, so what? Let the man play, be it here or elsewhere. Put away the story books and recognize that this is real life. People retire and un-retire all of the time, even in sports.

Does it make Favre look like a ****? It kind of does just for the fact it's magnified x1000 because he's a famous athlete. I don't understand the hasty reaction to retire, but then again I haven't been in that position.

What's amazing is that Favre has completely outplayed the Packers organization. Thompson looks like a complete a-hole right now. He's also incredibly stupid for tying himself to Aaron Rodgers. Brett Favre is the better QB for winning right now. You don't build teams anymore in the NFL anymore. The window to win is incredibly small.

The way out of this for the Packers is to let Favre play. It puts all of the pressure on him to perform. Then again, it does diminish everything they've been saying the past few months.

Bottom line is I am a Packers fan first. Favre is still the better QB. The funny thing about the Vikings rumors....The Vikings are basically the Packers right now without Favre. If Favre wasn't on the Packers, he's exactly the kind of player the Packers would be looking for since they're so thin at QB.

It's all very amusing, but I am sick of hearing about it as well.

Also, anyone who says "release him," isn't using their brain. Football IS a business. You don't just let a guy go when you can get something for him. If Favre is going to play football somewhere else we damn well better get something for it.

Demi, it's sort of like the Jordan/Krause thing in Chicago. Jerry Krause sort of disbanded the Bulls after the 6th championship. Krause always thought he was the reason they won all the championships in Chicago and he made the decision to move the team along, leaving Jordan, Pippen, Kerr, etc, to find other places to play or retire.

Sound like the Packers new GM is moving along the same fate. I think it's an absolute travesty what they are doing to Favre. He made the Packers what they are in the past decade or more and he should get a lot more respect from the organization than he's getting.

And I'm a Bears fan; but I also realize what a great athlete and competitor Favre is/was. He has my respect even as a die hard Bears fan.
