I'm pretty sure you can BUY component outs for the PS3, it just doesn't come with them.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

You are correct bobman. Sony uses the same proprietary connector that the ps2 uses, I believe. So just go out and buy the component cable for the ps3 or better yet, use the one from a ps2 if you have it lying around, and you should be good to go.

Well, paramount just went blu (again, second time they switched from hd-dvd exclusivity). So now every blu-ray player is a universal player.

    http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/DreamWorks/Paramount/Industry_Trends/Paramount_Goes_Blu/1496

Transition should be relatively quick as they were ready to release a few blu-rays when they last pulled the plug and rumor has it that they've actually got some in storage. I hope they remaster some of their disks that didn't include a lossless track the first time around.

Have any of the studios given any indication yet how long before HD DVD titles are available on Blu Ray?

Since both my Toshiba players quit working on Tuesday after the announcement (I think Toshiba sent out a 'kill' signal from the mothership) I now need to re buy my whole HD DVD collection in Blu Ray :D

Niether universal nor paramount have specific release dates yet, although analysts are guessing Spring to Summer for the earliest titles with universal taking the longest because they are two years behind the other studios.

Warner has announced Batman for Q3 with Matrix sometime in 2008.

Edit: Here's Warner's partial new release list:

Q2 2008: 'Dirty Harry: Ultimate Collection' (includes 'Dirty Harry,' 'Magnum Force,' 'The Enforcer,' 'Sudden Impact,' 'The Dead Pool' and bonus disc "Clint Eastwood: Out of the Shadows')

Q3 2008: 'An American in Paris,' 'Batman Anthology' (includes 'Batman,' 'Batman Returns,' 'Batman Forever,' 'Batman & Robin,' 'Batman Begins'), 'Batman Begins,' 'Gigi,' 'How the West Was Won'

Q4 2008: 'A Christmas Story: Ultimate Collector's Edition,' 'Otis: Uncut'

2008: 'The Adventures of Robin Hood,' 'Casablanca,' 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' 'Clash of the Titans,' 'Excalibur,' 'Forbidden Planet,' 'Grand Prix,' 'Heat,' 'The Matrix Trilogy,' 'Mutiny on the Bounty,' 'V for Vendetta'

2009: 'Ben-Hur,' 'Gone with the Wind,' 'North By Northwest,' 'The Wizard of Oz,' 'Woodstock'

2008/2009 Theatrical Releases: '10,000 B.C.,' 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,' 'The Dark Knight,' 'Get Smart,' 'Speed Racer'' and 'Where the Wild Things Are.'

Now if they would just make a decent (affordable) Blu-Ray player with component outputs (not just HDMI outputs). The PS3 is nice but no component outs....

If you insist on watching a blu ray player through components, you are not ready for blu ray. sorry.

I also dont suggest wasting the money if you only have a 1080i tv.

    Disagree 100%. Strongly.

When I bought into both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray back in 2006, I only had a 1080i CRT RPTV. The improvement in PQ was VERY noticeable.

I *really* wish people would stop with the "you can't see any difference on a 1080i set" nonsense, because that's what it is: nonsense.

If you have a large 1080i set that is properly calibrated and properly connected, you will see a big difference compared to DVD.

I understand what your saying but you alittle off here. 1080i sets still look great with Blu ray even in component. I agree even a 1080i set improves with HDMI on blue ray. And even better yet 1080p set. Whats cool about it is the fact when 1080i people become hdmi 1080p , they have something to look forward 2.
I say spend your money and go Blu.. it rules.

I completely agree with you. DVD looks good , blu ray looks fantastic even on 1080i.

People need to do a side by side and see for themselves. It's worth it.

Watching HDM through component is just fine, allthough a bit in the stone age of getting the signal passed.

As for wasting money because you only have a 1080i set, I suggest you go look at HDM on a 1080i display before making a comment like that. I'm willing to be you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p, it's nothing like seeing 480i and 480p, the difference are much more subtle.

Care to elaborate on these nuggets of wisdom? How is component inferior to HDMI exactly? And since when is 720p not HD? (Assuming all 1080i TV's will do 720p).

no kidding. I'll put my Pioneer Elite 720p (768p) model against most of the so-called 1080p models out there from various manufacterers. btw, i believe that 1080i is no longer an active term considering it was designed around CRT's.

Sure. But Plasmas and LCD's that say 1080i are in reality 720p. There are no native interlaced flat panel widescreen HDTV's that I'm aware of. They just convert 1080i (and any other) inputs to 720p or 768p. I got that lil' tidbit here, here, and here and used that info for all things considering my purchase. But hey what do I know.

My Samsung will do a 1080i input, but it's 720p native.

As much as I love my brand new 52" 1080p LCD, I know for a fact that my 7 year old 32" 1080i CRT that it replaced has a better (but much smaller) picture -- HD and SD. I'd put that CRT up against any new plasma or lcd on the market right now. However, it's only 32" in a 4:3 format so its tiny for widescreen sources, and it weight 200lbs!! And no HDMI :(

The problem, IMO, is LCD. I'm not a fan of the technology at all.

SXRD on the other hand... ;)

Hes getting the 768 from 1360x768. Which is the resolution of or "actual pixels" on the screen of most lcds and plasmas before 2007. Now more have the full 1920x1080 physical pixels across the grid.

I was strongly considering SXRD but I couldn't get past the small viewing angle. All projection technologies, including SXRD, also appeared to have dimmer corners to me, at least in the stores.

LCD's have greatly improved. I'm very pleased with my LCD. Everything about it is fantastic, viewing angles, colors, brightness. I can't wait to get a Blu-Ray player and really see what it can do.

1080i looks fine...just not as good as 1080p

I upgraded from a 51" 1080i native rear projection TV to the pioneer kuro pdp-5080. Obviously there is going to be a difference, but the difference is night and day.
