Blu-Ray wins as of today. Toshiba is pulling out of the HD war. Hopefully this can be the last topic on the issue!

    Glad its finally resolved.

Of course it never really did affect me. Im just now putting together a HT and since Im still using a 27" tv, a high def DVD player is WAY down on my list of things I desperately need!

    woo-hoo

I didn't seeing it coming in December when I bought my Samsung dual player BD-UP5000. But now, picking up those $5 red box in the near future would be a fun hunting exercise (or so I hope). HiDef is HiDef right?

I'm sure you can get some awesome deals around now. I'm probably not the only one who noticed that all the BOGO deals ended when Blu-Ray got Warner support.

HD-DVD prices on Amazon are under $20 now and dropping. Lots of people are selling their stock on craigslist and ebay as well. I suppose some people REALLY only want one player.

When the format dies it doesn't mean you cant still watch the movies!

Toshiba will be fine. Once they start producing Blu-ray DVD players, they'll probably end up with a nice chunk of the market. I like my A2 and if I buy a Blu-ray player, I'd definitely buy a Tosh unit over a Sony.

Fact #1: I can vote...er...play BLUE and RED
Fact #2: The future is BLUE and RED knows it. So, RED throws in the towel. But, RED is still good in my book.
Fact #3: The true faith of BLUE will be decided in November, but I still may play RED

wink wink nudge nudge or nudge nudge wink wink?

ok. I am bored on a gorgeous Saturday morning, but this is something to ponder.

Ran across this awesomeness. I think we finally have a new St. Cliff.
Ran off the forum because i did not agree with 80% of the forum in saying HD-DVD was the sure winner of the format war. PS3 and Blu-Ray would be obsolete before Xmas 2007. WOW! Great advice guys. Dam, i was right again. Nothing XBox fan boys can do now but whine. Way to man up! More great advice from the Polk forum.

Bring on the sales, I want another HD-DVD player or two and more movies at cheap prices. Just because it's dead won't stop me from buying up HD-DVD.

I just want a player for the upconversion, since I heard that the PQ of SD DVDs rivals that of much more expensive players (like the Denon 3910) with an HD-DVD player.

Yep , why the hell not? I plan on picking up a few when the prices all fall. The players still make great DVD players.

My XA2 will be with me until it dies. Best upconverting player on the market with the Reon chip. I've heard about the Rialta chip, but it's crazy expensive. Just got my 5 free HD DVD's in the mail yesterday...that brings the collection up to 35. I don't regret buying into HDDVD a bit.

Yup. I have my XA2, my original A1, and will be looking to pick up a second XA2 as player prices drop. Heck, refurb XA2s are available for $228 on ubid even now. Newegg has A20s for under $100.

As other people panic sell, I consider this a buying opportunity...

I'm a BR supporter but since universal players are available, and HD-DVD media is already less expensive, rock on. This is a great time to stock up.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

It's unfortunate that HD-DVD did not win. While BluRay had storage in its favor, HD-DVD had a bit more going for it (IMO at least). Please don't take me wrong as I did like the BluRay specification for data storage but I felt that HD-DVD was geared more towards consumers and movie entertainment for multiple reasons.
    • BD-J was not finalized for BluRay until well after it was released. This means that great multimedia features like picture-in-picture, internet access and more could not be done when BluRay first came out. HD-DVD, however; had all of these features from the beginning. While BluRay now has these features, older players are out of luck unless you install a firmware upgrade that isn't available to all BluRay players. Upgrading the firmware may not be the easiest thing in the world for your average user to do.
The movie 300 had to cut features from the BluRay version of the movie because of this issue.
    • BT+ is a virtual machine that all bluRay discs carry. This virtual machine can contain executables that the BluRay player will run. This allows the disc to detect whether the player has been modified or not and potentially disable the player. While I don't believe this has been employed yet, the possibility is there within the BluRay specification and I hope it's never used in that maner.
    • HD-DVD had backwards compatability with standard DVDs. While BluRay players can play DVDs, HD-DVD had the ability to press a standard DVD and HD-DVD onto the same disc. I purchased 300 like this and it's great because I can watch it in HD at home or in SD at someone else's house.

While the format war was bad for consumers (especially all of the HD-DVD early adopters), I don't think BluRay was the way to go.

In the end, I feel as if both formats will eventually fail. While HD entertainment is very important, new technologies like WiMAX and FiOS will make it very easy to stream HD directly to your television so I don't think BluRay will ever be as popular as standard DVDs.

is the PS3 still the best BR player on the market?

My wife is getting tired of my insistance not to buy anymore SD DVD's. I was hoping to wait until Christmas time for better prices but I think I'll be buying a BR player soon.

Yes, the PS3 can to it all less decoding DTS-MA which hopefully it will get a firmware upgrade to fix. Other then that your only other choice whould be the Panny BD50 that's do out in May sometime it's "rumored" to do decode all the audio formats.

I've had a PS3 for several weeks now, fantastic machine.

It seems to be the most future-proof, and since firmware upgrades have improved DVD upconversion and added SACD playback, it's really a great device.

I've had mine since Thanksgiving of 2006. I bought one of the 20GB variety, and I really have to say it's a great machine. Some people have complained about noise, but I find mine to be dead silent. It *DOES* need to reside in a well ventilated area though, as it can build up a fair amount of heat.

The biggest drawback was the lack of an IR remote, but that has since been solved. I bought this remote control and it works like a charm. Dirt cheap too. I taught my universal remote the codes and voila! Finally, integration with the rest of my HT.

NOTE: you cannot control power on/off or eject with this solution, but everything else works just fine.

    1. Turn off PS3.

    2. Put dongle in one of the available USB ports.

    3. Power on PS3.

    4. Point remote and click.

    :D:D

    (Seriously, it's that easy.)
