I wish you the best of luck. My recommendation is IF you can't find anything that appeals to you right away, take every benefit you can get from the state/ fed. and get trained in SOMETHING other than what you've been doing, i.e. building trades, IT, etc. It won't be huge $ for a while, but it is usually a secure job.

    (R) ?

You may want to recheck the political affiliation of the house speaker that is elected by the house majority ... and while your thanking the congress for anything, be sure to thank them for letting FISA lapse while they go on vacation ...

Unemployment INSURANCE should be funded by a company (as incentive in case of layoff) or individual.

SOCIALISM is unemployment pay funded by tax dollars.

    VASTLY different.

When the government forces the company to pay for "insurance" how is it different from a tax on operations?

Er, my "should" was meant "if you're going to call it insurance, it should voluntarily be provided by your company as incentive"..... not "all companies SHOULD by law provide it". Re-reading it now it came out wrong.

Good luck in your job search!!! And, remember that the senate (D) attempted to extend to you an additional 3 to 6 months of unemployment compensation in the economic stimulus package but couldn't get it past the house (R). Lastly, the FED says we are just in a slump...not a recession.

Um, ZIPPY, hate to break the news to you but BOTH houses of congress are run by the Dem.'s: Nancy Pelosi-D, CA & Mary Reid-D, NV

Medicare & Medicaid are called insurance too ... So will Hillary and/or Obama care ...

As far as being vastly different is concerned, whether YOU pay the government directly through payroll deductions or YOU pay for it through some companies higher price of goods and services it's all basically the same ... YOU paid for it ... If you don't like the word socialism ... that's fine ... just don't think that someone other than YOU is paying for it and feel free to call it whatever you like other than capitalism, free markets etc ...

This is going way off the rails and I apologize.

Here's what I meant. If a company wants to VOLUNTARILY OFFER employees unemployment insurance, that's a good thing. Just like if they VOLUNTARILY OFFER you medical insurance. You don't have to take it, but if you feel like paying for it for piece of mind, you MAY. That's as free market as you can get.

Even if a company REQUIRES that its employees have unemployment insurance, that's not socialistic; you can choose not to work for / buy from that company and therefore be monetarily unaffected. So long as it's not legally required that ALL companies have it then there's always a consumer / employee CHOICE.

sorry you had to do that daboys. Today was a pretty bad day at my office as well. We had almost 300 layoffs (majority in the field) and I also lost one in my department. Thankfully it looks like my job is pretty secure though.

Stay positive and focused and things will work out. I know that is tough as I went through a downsize 7 years ago, but it turned out it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Good luck and I am sure you will be chiming in telling us what job you landed. Now get that polished resume out there.

PS - Do not be afraid to ask for professional help regarding your resume, interviews and how to find that job.

Let's see, forcing someone to put money into an account so someone else who isn't working can get it isn't leeching in your world, nice....

Going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing the OP has NO desire to see a single cent of unemployement and would prefer to be a productive and valuable member of society rather than a victim.

You seem to be very mean spirited. Yes, most of us would prefer to be a "productive and valuable member of society." When you get unemployment benefits because you lost your job does not make you a leech.

I don't know you or what you do for a living and if you are lucky enough to keep your position in your job, that is great for you. Some people lose jobs through no fault of their own and need some help until they can get back into the workforce. This does not make a honest, hard working man, a leech.

    What an ironic name...

Mean spirited? You put up with Ron's childish political and personal potshots and crackpot theories for a year and then talk to me again. This is about thread number 40 or 50 that he has derailed with his political views and sheer ignorance of basic economics. Basically, myself, and several others are sick of his ignorant rants, his hypocrasy, and genral attitude on this forum. If you want to stick up for him, that's cool, but since you're relatively new, why don't you watch from the sidelines a bit before wading in uninformed.

Again if EITHER you or Ron would like to start another thread, I, and others here, would be more than willing to educate you on these things. Quit trying to derail the current thread.
