sound quality in iPod

Hi, I`m new here, hoping someone could shed some light on the following: i am hooking up my iPod to my Marantz PM-15S1 amp and i noticed that i need to crank up the volume considerably in order to get the same level of sound as opposed to say the tuner or CD Player sound level. Is this because of the compressed music lower fidelity?
Thanks!
Thanks!

on my ipod there was a "sound check" option....turned that off and the volume increased

this is normal - the ipod's output isn't as high as, say, a CDP.Audio: Polk S15 * Polk S35 * Polk S10 * SVS SB-1000 Pro

It's probably not line level output either, so crank the volume up to max on the iPod. My Zen has both LL and volume controlled out (headphones) but it has great input volume. My daughter has an iPod and depending on what it's plugged in to, the volume is cranked all the way up, then adjusted with the receiver.- Onkyo TX-SR805

Actually, this is what i have been doing, i was only wondering whether its the right way or not. I thought the amp would have been able to amplify the sound level easier, but apparently its got nothing do to with the amp.
Not to mention that if i forget to return the sound to normal levels, it will kill my ears when using earplugs...it happened a couple of times -

But, in time you may notice (depending on the quality of your amp/speakers) that the ripped mp3's are lacking.
When I had crap speakers and a crap receiver I could not tell the difference. But now with my 1.2tl's and a pair of Carver amps I can hear the difference between a ripped song on my iPod and that same song playing from a CD on my CD player.

You are on the wrong forum if you think you can you try to convince people you can make an iPod sound like a CD.....I believe you because I've done it but the other thousands of members won't.
