Tool: Undertow . . .

. . . I just had a religious experience.

I'm not sure if it was the recording or my system. But, this album never sounded so good. IT was spooky sick. At one point there is a man speaking as music plays in the background. When he began speaking I jumped out of my seat . . . It sounded like he was right behind my left ear! Whispering. I'm frickin serious. Someone was in that room with me. Stereo is awesome!

The music continues to play until it grows to full volume. The guitar was primarily at center stage, but a few spooky notes would jump behind my listening position. Amazing!

God I love stereo and Tool!

Tool's Opiate does the same thing to me, incredible imaging.

That album is one of my all time favs. It was on full rotation in my teenage years, and yes the part where Henry Rollins speaks in "Bottom" can spook you on even a modest system.

You can't go wrong with any Tool album, but I would recommend 10,000 Days, Lateralus, and Undertow. As for Korn, IMO, the older the better.

All of the Toll Albums are amazing in their own right. There earlier albums are a little more angry but also has its elements of some guys just screwin around and having fun. LAteralus, Aenima, and 10,000 days are notceably more mature.

I would start with Opiate as it is their first. Just know that it does not nearly reflect where they are now.

They really don't have alot of discs. I love them all except 10,000 Days, their newest one.

Just doesn't seem to have the passion of the earlier ones.

I thought the same thing at first, but it took time to grow on me. Now 10,000 days and the song itself Opiate get the most play time in my rig.

10,00 Days grew on me as well. A whole hell of a lot. I love them all. Especially this one. The material is way more mature. Listen to the lyrics. This is one of the best and the recording is awesome.

I don't own any Tool or Korn, Can you guys suggest which albums I should pick up?

I need some new CD's to listen to. And today is Sunday, The WAF is away and I have a $100 best buy gift card leftover from christmas ;)

    Thanks!

All of the Tool albums are good. Lateralus may be the one to impress you the most, as it's their best, IMO.

Korn blows, and shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Tool. We'e talking about a band that's creative and detailed vs a band full of pierced and tattooed monkeys that play instruments.

I wouldn't go that far. Their first two records were great, unfortunately after that it was a very slippery slope. :D

    I like 1 song by Tool(Hush) and 1 song by Korn(Coming Apart?)
Although, I think Tool is more talented because they utilize rap LESS in their music:D

I have it. I'm not totally happy with it since I had to clean A BRAND NEW RECORD three times to get rid of the cracking and popping.

5 Tool & one from The Who that was missing in my collection.

Which one should I start with?

The Oldest one first?, and move up until I get to the current?
    Thanks!

They are all great and different. Some of my favorites:

    Undertow - Sober, bottom, untertow
    Aenima - 46 & 2, Third Eye
Lateralus - The Patient, Lateralus, Reflections
10K Days - Right in two

When it first came out , Undertow got me hook line and sinker...was absolutely awesome. Sober's bass line kicked you in the chest...became my favorite song/band the instant I bought that cd many moons ago. They kick **** in concert as well. The cries of the carrots was hilarious at the time I thought...:D ( From Disgustipated )

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber.
And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself.
And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest.
And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil.
One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear.
    And terror possesed me then.
    And I begged,
"Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?"
And the angel said unto me,
"These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots!
You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust."
And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared,
"Hear me now, I have seen the light!
They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul!
    Damn you!
    Let the rabbits wear glasses!
    Save our brothers!"
    Can I get an amen?
    Can I get a hallelujah?
    Thank you Jesus.

That still makes me laugh. Most of the time Tool is just joking around with the music they write. That's the funny part. They can et some people really fired up and yet they are just having fun . . . while making a point.

My ALLTIME favorite lyric from a tool song happens to be from Undertow as well...from Sober...the music matching with these lyrics is magic.

I will find a center in you.
I will chew it up and leave,
I will work to elevate you
just enough to bring you down.

I think the Lyrics of this song are brilliant.

    Aenima:

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
    I certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this

**** three ring circus sideshow of
    Freaks

Here in this hopeless **** hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any **** time. Any **** day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.

    Fret for your figure and
    Fret for your latte and
    Fret for your hairpiece and
    Fret for your lawsuit and
    Fret for your prozac and
    Fret for your pilot and
    Fret for your contract and
    Fret for your car.

    It's a
**** three ring circus sideshow of
    Freaks

Here in this hopeless **** hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any **** time. Any **** day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.

Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will cuz
I sure could use a vacation from this

    Silly ****, stupid ****...

One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

    Learn to swim.

Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be.

    Learn to swim.

    **** L Ron Hubbard and
    **** all his clones.
    **** all those gun-toting
    Hip gangster wannabes.

    Learn to swim.

    **** retro anything.
    **** your tattoos.
    **** all you junkies and
    **** your short memory.

    Learn to swim.

    **** smiley glad-hands
    With hidden agendas.
    **** these dysfunctional,
    Insecure actresses.

    Learn to swim.

    Cuz I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna watch it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.

Time to bring it down again.
    Don't just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.

    I can't imagine why you wouldn't
    Welcome any change, my friend.

I wanna see it all come down.
    suck it down.
    flush it down.

I agree, most of their lyrics are incredible. I just hope the lyrics from Prison Sex weren't from a personal experience.

IMO, their work has the best imaging out of anything else I've listened to.

Dreaming of that face again. It's bright and blue and shimmering. Grinning wide and comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes. On my back and tumbling down that hole and back again rising upand wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

I wish I new more about sound engineering to appreciate how the hell these guys can create what they do and others can barely create a dynamic set of notes.
