    where ?

The SACD of "New York City" is basically out-of-print because it was pressed in very small quantities for the Taiwanese market. However, a member of the stevehoffman.tv website recently discover an e-tailer that may still have this title in stock. Go to the end of this thread.

This SACD was discovered by me and you can read the whole story in the link. Please go to post #30 and #32 in the link and you read a post from the engineer who engineered the SACD (he also did the SACDs of The Kinks)....
This EP has a long and winding story and more than its fair share of controversy since it was recorded before Ms. Jones received the phenomenal success that she rightly deserves. Other than to say that the project gives a rare glimpse into a chance musical encounter and offers very fine performances by Norah, Peter, and the band, I’ll confine my comments to the technical side of things. The recording did originate in a multi-track 16-bit/44.1k session tracked and mixed by Ducky Carlisle who is well versed in old-school analog gear and technique, and this is reflected in the warm, round sound of his work. As with audio in general, it’s the implementation and the skill of the engineer that determine the sound – not the format. I’ll try to explain what is different about the SACD. I had originally mastered this set for a Koch CD release. Some time later the order came in for an SACD master. Rather than upsample the CD version I suggested going back to the original mixes for slightly different approach and, to their credit, Koch agreed. The SACD is less peak-limited and uses a slightly warmer EQ. Conversion to DSD was done with softDSD which has its own euphonic character thanks to the mathematical genius of its creator Mariusz Pawlicki. I also find that DSD yields a better recovery on the consumer’s end than most PCM, even with lower-cost SACD players. Don’t ask me why, it’s just what I hear. Much of the bad rap on 16/44 is the fault of poorly implemented consumer DACs. With the SACD, more of the quality of the mix makes it to the end-listener’s ear, and this was a good sounding set of mixes. The CD layer of the High-Note SACD was derived from the new DSD master and it does retain some of the euphonic effect of the softDSD modulation. I made every effort to create an SACD master that would be of value to those who love the format and leave it up to the listener to decide if I was successful in that endeavor.

Well.... You like what you like.

I listened to the first because everyone was gushing about how great it was. I thought it was just plain bad. The recording may have been good but the music....sucked IMO. Boring, repetetive, slow, boring. When the second came out and everyone was still gushing over BOTH albums...I thought maybe I didn't give it a chance and listened to the first again and the second. They still sucked IMO. There are very few artists that I simply can't stand. Nora Jones is one.

I don't know where you can get a New York City SACD copy these days, maybe eBay.

My office rig couldn't tame it. Let me know if yours can.

That sounds like the way I feel/felt about Nirvana and any band remotely close to them. Boring stuff.

Exactly. And pretty. I am not a fuddy duddy music wise. I listen to Pearl Jam, White Stripes, Arcade Fire, Rage Against the Machine and NIN et al and I LOVE Norah. It's just a different gear.

I didn't buy the second one, I believe that is the one with the red dress spread out. I remember a review Carl posted saying it was just okay. I lucked out and didn't fall into the same trap.

F1nut turned me on to some bluesy stuff she did and it was very good.

I do like listening to Norah on occasion. I can't do more than a couple of CD's in a row, though...I have to spread them out. One CD I picked up I really like from reading about it in this or another forum is Patricia Barber. I picked up a "Live...A Fortnight in France" which I'm listening to again now. Pretty good stuff to listen to.

Singers like Norah, Diana Krall, and Laura Fygi are enjoyable when mixed together. Listening to any one of them entirely for hours will put you to sleep or have you looking for a rope or razor blades unless you're a crazed fan like me - I can listen to Krall for days. :D

Last night I fell asleep in the Shed listening to Meatloaf bash out Bat out of Hell at about 90 db. I fear the end is very near for me.......
