Dynaudio Contour 1.3 Mk II.

No words to describe. Come on over and listen.

Damn.

Thanks to Troy (tryrrthg) for letting me have his babies.

Just that. I'll post some pictures with all the changes when I get the last piece.

Did I ever say I'm done? ;)

    Welcome to the Dynaudio family.

Hard to explain. It's measured in goose bumps.

    Goose bumps per square inch?

    Interesting

Not really....it's goose bumps by square centimeter.

Goose bumps come from your brain analyzing the sound that comes out of the speaker. The closest the sound of an instrument or voice is to the real thing (according to YOUR brain), the more goose bumps you get. This would be the highest contributor to goose bumps, but there are other factors, such as soundstage and imaging that also have a great contribution combined.
Then comes the bass; how accurate and low can it get. And so on. Different brains provide different goose bump values to each contributor. For example, I'm sure in your case the bass would have a high contribution. Follow?

I have a little gadget that measures these goose bumps. It's a little camera mounted on a small tripod that you attach to the part of your body that is more prone to have goose bumps. The camera actually measures the differencial on skin surface waves, or pretuberances. It has a digital screen that gives you the value, and also has an USB connection that you can use to get a print out.

    Nice speaker. REALLY nice speaker.

That being said, if it's the best you've heard - you still have a LOT of listening to do friend, enjoy it. That speaker might make it into my top 100.

If I had a bigger listening room, I would still have the Thiels. They are great speakers that provide that "true" sound I like. But with some bass heavy tracks, there was what I would call an unbalanced presentation. There's a limit to what room treatments can do.

I thought of trying a smaller Thiel, but then it would have taken the fun of trying yet another great brand.

This makes perfect sense. The deep hitting bass of the Thiels is something that I really like. Not sure if this is the famous "Krell Bass Slam" or if it is the Thiels. Anyway, I think there is some real/noticeable synergy between the Krell Amps and the Thiel 3.6's.

In just a few days I'll be back home with my Contour S1.4, with a new amp, 2 new pre-amps, new interconnects, and new tubes to try out.

I haven't been as impressed as you with the S1.4. I also have a pair of Von Schweikert VR-1, and I think those mated with some tube gear have the contours beat in several ways. In my opinion of course.

I can't wait to try the new B&K/Dodd gear with the Danes and the VR-1. I hope I have the same experience as you. Congrats on the new speaks, it was the 1.3MKII that I heard with McIntosh gear that lead me to give Danes a try at home.

Now, post pics and details of why you like them so darn much!

Could be both. I know my amp is not very "popular", but bass is one thing it does extremely well. Some extracts from a review:

....The quality of the bass your speakers will produce with the Reference’s greater-than-2000 damping factor is simply fabulous......

......The 350A Reference rocked the room, providing more low-end power and control than other amps I've heard.....

.....It is simply remarkable to hear how much better bass can be when the amplifier has a huge damping factor, bleeding-edge topology, and a power supply that can dump lots of current.....

I owned the VR-1's, and I liked them a lot. One thing that the Dyn's do better is bass. It is unbelievable how these small bookshelves hit so low and so hard. I was a bit concerned on missing that low side of music with these, so I bought a Von Schweikert sub to mate with them. The sub is gone (Great music sub by the way). These little boxes hit 35 Hz with lots of authority in my room, and that's definitely enough for music, for me.
I also think that good SS gear will drive these better. I don't have any tubes in my rig any more and can't compare, but at 86 db and 4 ohms, I think it will be a bit hard to make them show what they are capable of with ordinary tube gear.
The other thing that they do well, as good or better than the Thiels, is reproduce instruments and voices as close to reality as I've heard. I don't know what the right term is to describe this, but everything sounds just "right".
Imaging and soundstage are unreal. But this is something that probably any decent 2 way bookshelf would do better than the Thiels in my room.

Cool, and I agree 100% about the bass. I've got a nice beefy SS amp just waiting to mate with the danes at home. You can bet it'll be the first thing I do when I get there. ;)

    Welcome to the Dynaudio family.

2nd that. Dynaudio in my opnion are the best in the world. At all levels , I feel they exceed all other brands. I have mine for a few years now and the only thing I would want to do is buy better Dyns. Actually I'm happy with what I got. I'm cool with them and it's the first time in my audio life I didn't look at the speakers and want to upgrade them.

The 1.3's are fantastic. The entire Contour line is fantastic. I would love to upgrade to the 5.4 and fill out the rest of the home theater setup. I already own there current best sub in the sub 500 and it's retarded how smooth and musical it is. I'm completely happy.

    Good luck with them,

If those Contours tickle your fancy; I'd encourage you to investigate the true music making Danes; the Special 25 or the Confidence 1 monitors. Not to slight Contour / Audience series, but they were built to satisfy the listener that wants a high quality general purpose loudspeaker. In other words; those speakers were voiced to excel at HT applications. For the discriminating audiophile wanting to get that Dane luv', you're gunna need to step it up one more notch.

I predict that in a week or so, the ra-ra factor will begin to subside and you will begin to thirst for the next level. When (not "if") you do; step into the C1's. Given your tastes... you may have found your next huckleberry... that is, until you find something else a week later. :)

I hope it's more like a couple of months later...

You might be right on the ra-ra factor, though it's hard to think on these speakers not being designed strictly for 2 channel. In any case, right now they sound very good to my ears for music.
Plus, the Confidence line looks soooooo horrible.....(I know looks is not important, but I can't imagine myself looking at those ugly gray baffles) :)
