Looks pretty ugly. Took the piano finish out, and made it charcoal color?

Yea, a matte finish. Not as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as opposed to the now 'older' model with that shiny wow factor. Sure the new one is lighter/smaller but it also looks....imo....crappier.

I like piano black better only because it goes with all the other piano black A/V equipment I have. Matte does solve the fingerprint magnet problem tho...

Also, they replaced the touch sensitive panel with real tactile press buttons. And they seem to have kept the hard drive as an easily replaceable/upgradable component. It makes it top heavy in the new position IIRC. So the best placement is to lay the console flat. Not much advantage to vertical placement anymore as the system vents out the back instead of the 'top'.

Amen, plus if youre like me and have an older receiver and wanted to take on the new codecs the ps3 doesnt have multi channel analog outputs for true dolby/master dts decoded audio via LCPM from the BD player

I had a PS3 when it first came out, you know the whole opening the doors at midnight stuff...theres a reason why I don't have it anymore.

Seems like the Oppo and the PS3 will appeal to different people. Those with equipment without HDMI 1.1 or above or who need SACD/DVD-A compatibility and have $500 to spend will find a lot of value in the Oppo with analog outs and great format support. Those who game and get their lossless audio via HDMI and who want to store or stream all their digital content through one box will find a lot to like in a $300 PS3. Both offer a lot more than the $100-$200 Blu-ray dedicated players popping up at retailers now.

Just FYI. Dealcatcher.com's catch of the day is a ps3 slim from dell for $284.99 Free Shipping with Dell Home Coupon: NQVX4R5XXSVD0T. I haven't tried it myself, but thought I'd pass this discount on top of the price drop on to polkies who want one...

I'm thinking of doing the same, but I'll wait until after I upgrade my receiver. My brother just bought a PS3 Slim, so I'll convince him to bring it over and try it out before I consider getting one. I've heard the Slims are very quiet and use from 30% to 50% less power than the "fat" models.

There is good and bad to this. Many people who weren't as good to their equipment complained that the old PS3's finish was far too easy to scratch. The Slim, by contrast, looks far more resistant to scratches and showing fingerprints.

im thinking about getting a slim i have the phat 60 gb from launch. have had no problems with it what so ever but a ps3 with that is gives off less heat uses less energy and makes less fan noise is very temting. i could always use the phat ps3 as my bedroom bluray player and video games system.
