PS3 Price Drop Confirmed

Today, Sony confirmed to the Associated Press what a fusillade of reports from US retailers had augured last week. As of July 10, the PlayStation 3's North American price point is going south. The next-generation console will cost $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, the same price as the discontinued 20GB model.
The price drop announcement was accompanied by more unexpected news: The 80GB PS3, previously only available in South Korea, is also headed stateside. The larger-capacity system will go on sale in August for $599, and will have all the functionality of the 60GB model. To help stifle complaints that $100 might be a bit much to pay for 20GB more of hard disc space, Sony is bundling the game with the off-road racer MotorStorm, which currently retails for $59.99.

That's good news, that may push me towards the PS3 instead of the 360, unless I can find a 360 Elite...
-
Still doing nothing for me. The 20gb was $499 and that was to much IMO, now you get more space (which personally I wont use) for $499...which is to much.
I'm still waiting for the PS3 to get some good games and come down in price. -
I wonder how long before we actually start seeing price drops in places like Best Buy? I'm still debating on where to spend my $500....

I've said this before here but if you get the Ps3 for nothing more then being the center of your digital media for you HT, its well worth it.Testing

CD, DVD, SACD. To my knowledge Sony has never made a player of any kind that supports DVD-A.

I agree, I think $349 is my magic number + a boatload of available games. On the Blu Ray side, this should be a small boost to counter HD-DVD. We will see.

I see this as desperation...already a $100 price drop before a year has passed?
I like it though..Pioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub -
Yup, $499 for a PS3 and $479 for the 360 "elite" Finally looks like a real competition now. Might have to get the PS3 just for BR now. There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Other than for Blu-ray, I don't have a reason to get one yet...as long as the 360 is working...:oPioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub

All DVD-A's have really good 5.1 Dolby mixes on them and i have been very content with that. Ha, Sony denied it yesterday and confirmed it today.

PS3 Gets Bigger, Cheaper
North America gets two SKUs again, one with pack-in game.
by Jeremy Dunham
July 9, 2007 - Rumor has become truth this morning, as Sony Computer Entertainment has confirmed that it will slashing the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 model, while also introducing a new 80GB model in the US and Canada.
The 60GB version, previously priced at $599 US ($659 CND), has been lowered to $499 US ($549 CND) starting immediately. The 80GB SKU, already available in Korea, will ship on our side of the pond with MotorStorm packed in.
Sony also confirmed that it plans on shipping more than 120 new first and third-party games in North America throughout the holidays and fiscal year.
The new 80GB unit comes with MotorStorm in AND on the box."As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA. "The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold."
Technologically, the 60GB and 80GB PlayStation 3s will be identical other than hard drive space. The 20GB model, has been discontinued in the US, as was reported earlier this year. -
Just remember, all Sony really probably needs to do is update a little software and it could play DVD-A's.Testing

Don't hold your breath on that one.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Yeah, maybe add hd-dvd as well...;) I think blu-ray, cds, dvds, sacds, and games is pretty good for one machine. But ... maybe if it could cut the lawn, then it would really be impressive...
I'm actually somewhat dissappointed in this move as the 20 gig machine was only missing wireless and some flash memory slots. I could care less what hard drive is in these things as newegg has a 200 GB drop in drive for only $140. I would have rather had them phase out the 60 GB for the 80 GB and drop the 20 GB to $399. Blu-ray doesn't really need much more help from the ps3. The s300 is already competing well against the toshiba players at retail. And since the new year, hd-dvd hasn't won a single month in software sales. It's high time they delivered for the gamers, though.
Wow, just checked amazon. And as of this moment, the newly discounted ps3 slipped past the wii to take the #1 spot in video games. I think I just heard a lot of people jumping off a big fence...

Not long...Online retailers BB, CC, Amazon, all have the ps3 marked down already. -

How do they have a ranking for a product they have no stock of? -
I would assume just like many other sites. It tracks "but it now" hits or interest in a certain product from detail description hits.

There is no buy it now since they don't have any Nintendo Wii in stock. I'm pretty sure it had previously been a tracking of units sold, which would pretty much be useless information for comparison to the Wii since they don't have any to sell.
I'm sure the PS3 is outselling their $10 time machines as well, too bad they don't have any in stock. -

Since when? I don't have many DVD-As but I didn't think all of them have a DD counterpart. Linkin Park Reanimation for example doesn't seem to, it has DD for a few music videos but not for most of the disc. -

Amazon has add to cart buttons for its tertiary sellers. You can go through the check out process, but you're just not buying from the amazon warehouses. So yeah, they should be able to track it. The thing is that usually, people would prefer not to buy from a 3rd party through amazon since you lose out on benefits such as the free shipping or other amazon promotions. It's a testament to the wii's popularity that even thru 3rd party sellers, the wii hit the top of the video game sales charts and held that position consistently. Of course, the ps3 taking what looks like the top three spots away from the wii with increases in all things related to the ps3 in games and accessories seems significant. I'm curious to see if it's just a spike or if it will having some staying power beyond this week.
Here are the movers and shakers in the category for a different look at the spike in ps3 and accessory sales:

Half full, half empty.
I would consider the PS3 finally outselling an out of stock item an indicator of it's previous in-significance, not a signal of anything currently. Compare it to the xbox360, fine, but comparing it to something that they don't have any stock of doesn't really tell you squat. -
Phantom,
I'm not trying in anyway to bash the wii. It's sort of irrelevant anyways what previously held the top spot. The point is that the ps3 is now #1 in the rankings since the price drop outselling anything video game related on amazon which includes things like cheaper games and accessories. I didn't post it to compare it to the wii, just whatever was in the previous #1 spot. And because of its smashing popularity, that just happened to be the wii. -

ADV. RES. STEREO - ADV. RES. SURRUND - DVD VIDEO DDThe DD sound on this DVD-A is mindblowing, i totally bragged about it when i first got it.
Same with my other three DVD-A's.
