why has the title to this thread been perpetually stuck under the sub-category main screen?

LOL! I read the first post and said WTF... that happened a long **** time ago... next time, I'll read the date first. Cool beans on another drop. I scored mine for $285 Out the door about 2 years ago due to some 'predatory' shopping techniques -

only one i'm interested in owning is the 60gb. i hate that in my opinion, they've TAKEN things AWAY from their console.

I agree, but that's why it is getting cheaper, because the console is getting "cheaper" for them to make too I would imagine. By leaving out all the good stuff that was in the 60GB and older 80GB models. I have an older 80GB model that does everything and I don't regret buying it at all, even when it still cost $500. IMHO it is the best all around option for a Blu-Ray player for people who like video games too.

I've been debating on that. Either buying a stand alone blu ray player, and building my own small computer for music/videos/internet browsing or just using my PS3 for all.

That's great...lol. It went down $100, and for $299, you get a great blu ray player that acts like a media center.Samsung LN52A850 (52" 1080P LCD TV) | RTi A9's (Fronts) | Csi A6(Center) | FXi A6 (Rear Surrounds) | SVS PB12-NSD (Sub) | Oppo BDP-103 | Panamax M5300-PM

Actually, the slim is a better blu-ray player/media center than current models. According to reports, they've finally upgraded the hdmi chip to allow bitstreaming lossless to an AVR. And, it's supposed to be 10db quieter. Very nice upgrades for those putting them in home theaters...

I was actually thinking of getting a cheap blu-ray dedicated player depending on the Christmas sales to play around with bitstreaming. Now with the slim and price drop, another ps3 might be a possibility too...

Amen, plus if youre like me and have an older receiver and wanted to take on the new codecs the ps3 doesnt have multi channel analog outputs for true dolby/master dts decoded audio via LCPM from the BD player
I had a PS3 when it first came out, you know the whole opening the doors at midnight stuff...theres a reason why I don't have it anymore.Truck setup

That's what I will probably do. My other PS3 is the original one with PS2 compatibility so it should not be a problem to sell it.
Any pictures of the slim? I wish it looks more like a BD player than a console.
