OK HT Subwoofer

What I can get OK subwoofer for HT around $250ish.
I currently have PSW10 which is good for music but for movie I didn't hear its there. Its frequency response is 35Hz - 200Hz. Does it matter? My other speakers are RTi4, CSi3. Thanks for any input.

In $250 used range look at bigger Polk, JBL, Infinity. If you go ~$100 more, you should be able to pick up JBL studio S120PII (400 Watts RMS into 12" driver). I really liked that sub for movies.

It's hit or miss. It can take a couple of days to a few weeks. I'd call or email them.

For that budget - your best bet would be DIY if you have any building skills at all. Other than that - I would just save a bit more / longer. It seems like around $350-$400 is where the decent home theater subs start.

Polk is supposed to be releasing some really nice subs this year. (really, they are...) it may be worth waiting and see what they have come up with.

(Matt apparently got tired of an entire forum dedicated to his speakers saying his subs sucked - now if he would just listen to us about the SDA's.....)

My Polk subs are great, always have been, they blow others away. Especially Velodyne. I would just buy another 250 and stack it or put it in another position in the room, whatever sounds best to you.

If you can build a box, or even easier yet go with sonotube. You will end up with a killer HT sub.

Okay..Okay.. Do you have any specific model in mind for around $350?
The new model comes out around September like RTiA series? May be it worth waiting if they sell for the discounted price not MSRP.
SVS? Yes, I know it is great subwoofer, most forum members' favorite here. But it is beyond my limit. The lowest 10" model costs $429+40 shipping. It doesn't even have crossover line level input. I would rather go 12" model which has full features if I can afford those.

Hi MKZ,

I'd actually look at the way you have your existing sub hooked up. I NEVER hook up a sub the "traditional" way and run speaker cables into the sub and out from the sub to the speakers :eek: .

I have the PSW250 8 inch sub (with the phase switch set to reverse or 180) and for the size of this bugger, it rocks both on music and HT (hooked up to the SurroundBAR). I also have my PSW505 hooked up the same way to my RTi10s with the front speaker setting as large in my AVRs. Check this Polk link for more info:

Hi Face,

I am currently live in apartment with hardwood floor, I am worried that the ED is the down-firing subwoofer so I don't want to get trouble with the people downstairs. would it be a problem? what do you think? I know I can't get that low frequency response unless spending $1000.

I connected the subwoofer with LR pre-amp out. Set the speaker config Front=Large and No Subwoofer on using Denon 1906AVR. At subwoofer, the crossover frequency is around 90~95Hz, phase 180 degree. I didn't connect the front speaker through sub since I want to bi-amp those. It sounds more cleaner to me compare to center channel. The subwoofer amp is 50W while receiver is supplying 85W/channel. I did tried the sub-out and it didn't sounds better than my current. Any idea? Thanks.

I believe with your current set up, you need the subwoofer set to yes. This maybe why you are not getting the sub in HT (or maybe music either).

I didn't connect subwoofer through LFE sub-out, if I set to yes it will cut the frequency lower than 80Hz.

He has connected his sub in what is known around here as the Polk Way, its just what we call it for short. Basically, using the speaker level connections.

If you are still not getting any "good" bass, you should set the sub in your listening position and turn it on with something that has a nice bass track or a bass tone. Then crawl around your room along the walls and see where the bass sounds the best, once you determine this you know where to set your sub, this is an old reliable technique which does require a bit of work.

I'll try that. I'm sitting 8ft away from front bookshelf speakers and woofer. I can even feel the bass in my chest from small speakers but not from woofer. I'm not playing loud, I like to get some bass response on low volume level. Thanks RT1.

It doesn't improved much after tweaking the sub and receiver setting. PSW10 is not as good as PSW250 like VXR8 and RT1 have. Those PSW250 are more like PSW303 RTi Series. I am worried about those down-firing sub since I lived in small apartment whose house rule has not to play loud music. I just don't want to get trouble. I need more opinions since I have to get the sub w/o knowing how it sounds and based on reviews and people suggestion. Hopefully some of you guys can help steer me in the right direction.
