Oh.... Yankee Nation

And before this devolves into something a wee bit nasty... let me just say that I was simply taking a crack at Yankee Nation. All in good fun.
You gotta admit that the Pinners have had free lunch for quite some time. Take some lumps for cryin' out loud. What if you were a Milwaukee, KC, Seattle, Tampa Bay, or Pirate fan? One trip to the corner with a dunce's cap is nothing to get bent over.
I grew up in the upper deck of an empty Fulton Co stadium watching the likes of Zane Smith, Ozzie Virgil and Joe Boever "The Saver" stink up the joint. About the only real entertainment we had was watching Chief Knockahomer burn down his teepee.
Multiply all that by 100 and maybe you have a taste of what it's like to be a Montreal Expos/Washington Nats fan.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -
Actually, Seattle spends a ton for their players. They just don't do a good job of it.

Roger dat. I was just talking about teams with long losing traditions irrespective of payroll.I never had it like this where I grew up. Seattle had good teams for a while there, but yeah, overall they've sucked pretty badly.

I agree, they should have a legitimate salary cap, the contracts should not be guaranteed but taking it out on the Yankees is pointing in the wrong direction. You need to get pissed off at MLB and the players union. If you hate the Yankees, then you better hate Boston as well because they are very close to the Yankees in payroll... How much did Boston pay just to have the rights to negotiate with one pitcher.... was it more than the Oaklands payroll? I think it was.
agreed...it's not just the Yankees...and if I were Steinbrenner I would do the same thing...He's not breaking any rules..Pioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub -
From memory, the last few WS champions;
Cardinals, Red Sox, Marlins, White Sox, Diamondbacks...
Hardly total dominance by any one team.
Although entry into the playoffs is another story.
true..but I remember the Marlins and the D-Backs totally buying their team that year...then onloading all of their talent the next year and suckingPioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub -

Then you are officially the Yin and Yang of baseball fandom:D
Speaking of Expo/Nat players... I remember when I was a wee lad bumping into Delino DeShields at a Rockford shopping mall when he was just coming up in the Expo organization. I may have been picking my nose at the time, but I still asked for his autograph.
What position and at what level, btw?I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Wow, are you people bitter and misguided.
When Florida won in '03, it was with a $53 million payroll, against the Yankees $164. How is that BUYING A CHAMPIONSHIP? Granted, in '97 or whatever other year they won, they had a very high (and unmaintainable) payroll, but in '03 they were the definition of the reason you DON'T NEED a big payroll to win. The current Yankees are a good example of that too - biggest payroll, no wins.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

I wish the Seattle GM was capable of doing that.
Except Ichiro. I will forever hate the Seattle management if they let him go. -
Don't forget "croggity" and "high fallutin'" Senor Bobarino. I don't think the issue was with their payroll in 2003, so much as their barn burning bonanza of wheeling and dealing and dealing.

Not really. Money isn't necessarily going to guarantee you a championship, but it's not exactly hurting your chances either. Why doesn't it always work? Well, you can't force players to get along with eachother and work together. Ego is always going to creep in.
What would be the talent level of 6 Terrel Owens' on an NFL offense? Probably off the charts, but how well would they work together? See my point?
The high payroll teams can spin it anyway they'd like, but you guys are buying way more talent than the bulk of teams can afford due to the no-ceiling policy in regards to contracts. There's nothing wrong with the teams who do it now, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a rule against it either.
I hold NOTHING against a player who could pull off a 500 million dollar contract. On the flip side I'm still all for a rule in baseball, a business, limiting the amount of money teams can spend on their teams each year. -
I have no problem with a salary cap in baseball, and I'm not particularly trying to defend my team - I've said many times that the Sox are really no better than the Yanks as far as just trying to buy the best players. That being said, empirical evidence doesn't show the correlation between championships and money that everyone would like to see. A salary cap hasn't led to parity in any of the sports where its been implemented, I don't see it doing it in baseball either. So while it may make small market fans feel like the big market teams no longer have a huge advantage, I don't think you'll see the radical change in dynamic that you expect. If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

It would certainly make more of a difference in the old divisional format. So I think you make a valid point Bob.I never had it like this where I grew up. We see it in football all the time. A team might be dominant for 3-4 years if they have a shred of organizational loyalty and made good draft/trade moves in the off season. That doesn't happen a lot, we were spoiled here for years, but then it was all gone.
If the Lions drafted a QB or got one who could play they might be able to make the playoffs this year.
So, it definitely makes for a more competitive environment year to year in other sports. I don't see it being all that different for baseball.
Hell, we got a new owner 3 years ago now. He actually spends money. Low and behold we keep our good players instead of trading them to championship teams and pick up players like Jeff Suppan from a championship team and we all of a sudden have a good team.
Baseball is all about pitching anyways, but yes, HEALTH and MONEY are huge factors in a teams success, IMO. Being able to play well as a unit also helps. There's not one single statement you can make that would make me believe the raw talent on the New York Yankees is better than any other team out there. It may not be refined, but he bought the talent. -
Are you still laughing? Cuz I thought the joke was pretty lame myself. Let me get this straight... the vast majority of overpaid players on the Stanks payroll are there becasue they "love the game"
I hear ya, but I think to limit the "for the greed of the game" attitude to just the Yanks is pretty short-sighted....Isn't that the prevalent attitude in all professional sports leagues now (save maybe hockey)? Wouldn't most players in most professional leagues go where the coin is nowadays? Like someone else said; if that is a problem then baseball (and more pointedly the players union) needs to implement a salary cap.
I know the Yankees are the in thing to hate, but not all of us are bandwagon, fairweather "pull for the winner" fans. My dad was a Yankees fan before me, and I became a serious fan during the early 80's........when they absolutely stunk up the field. We seriously had Mattingly, Randolph, Righetti, and that was about it.
The Yanks in the 80's:
1981- 3rd in the East
1982- 5th in the East
1983- 3rd in the East
1984- 3rd in the East
etc etc.
So in other words, while I grew up a Yanks fan, we didn't have much to cheer for when I got into baseball either. That was still my team and I still loved them though, b/c it was a bond that my father and I shared. I will never forget him coming home and pulling a fresh pack of cards out of his fatigues pocket, and me sitting in his lap while we scoured the pack for Yankees. We always went over the stats, who was who, etc, but we both got excited when we were lucky enough to get a Yankees player. THAT is what baseball is really all about (and sports in general); lest we forget....2007 Club Polk Football Pool Champ

What? Salary cap doesn't force competitive environment?
The salary cap nuked Hockey where there used to be only 4-5 teams that could be expected to win the Stanley cup every year and they were the same team year after year. Sure, everyonce in a while a team would get hot, but more likely then not the Avs, Stars, Red Wings, or Devils were going to win because of money.
Footballs another good example. Every year you have good tunrover on the playoff teams and unless you have incompetent management, you should make the playoffs everyother year. Football teams have a very hard time becoming dynasties because of the cap.
Oh wait, were talking baseball. I forgot to not care...There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -

What a difference a year makes... For this year, it will be Black & White stripes with a County # on the back.
