How's three hots and a cot in the AL East's cellar working out for you? Good to see Tampa Bay could pad their record a bit by facing the Pinstripes....

Ya think Bernie Williams might be having a time of it sipping on Mai Tais and watching Steinbummer blast his cell?

How's that impending $25 mil a month Clemens contract feel breathing right down your neck?

:p

Not to mention that a certain New England baseball team swept the aforementioned Bankers... I mean Yankees... rather recently.

oh boy... Let's see, if i had my choice of getting swept, would it be in April, when it doesn't matter, or in September when it does matter...

    I'll take April.

Although I hate the Yankees as they are what's wrong with MLB, there are still about 140 games left in the season..and they can just go out and buy whomever they need..

They'll be in the playoffs by season's end..

As a Red Sox fan myself... I really think Sox fans making fun of the Yanks payroll is a bit hypocritical and ridiculous. We are second on that list of high payrolls...

However, we actually paid for pitching with ours... :D

And if I had to choose a time for my much criticized "highest paid player in the league" to have a historical hitting run... it would also be in September, when it matters.

And in September, what will A-Rod be hitting? .200?

    Damn, it's still April, FCOL!

Little early to be ragging on one team,

especially when that one team has 26 and counting...

For the record, I bleed orange and blue , so I'm giggling under my breath too.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Since baseball is a game of numbers, I have to agree that statistically, A-Rod will be deep in a slump come September and will be batting 8th or 9th in October and by then, hopefully the other overpriced hitters will be more than making up for it.

All I care about is pitching this year. Depending upon some late season pickups and if the existing squad can get healthy, this year will be a repeat of 2000 including the two teams in the series. Sorry polrbehr, the Mets just won't have it in the series. Of course, I have nothing to back that up other than a fantasy of Pedro losing game 7 with 3 back to back homers in the 6th inning.

Now, don't get me wrong....nobody is a more faithful Sox fan than I nor hates the Yankees more than I....however, long way to go until October.

Also, the Yankees pitching is about where Boston's was last year. Give them some time and they will be back.

To be honest.... I never quite understood the whole "there's a long way to go" concept.

A win is a win is a win. When a team's one game behind in October, ask a team if they could have used one against the D-Rays in April.

Of course a win is a win but just because a team is playing well in April doesn't mean it can sustain that pace. Hell, Boston was in first place last year in late July and managed to collapse to the tune of like a dozen games in about a month and a half....it's a long season.

I hope both the Sox and the Yanks make it. There is no World Series match up more exciting than an ALCS between these two teams. I only hope that the Yanks add Aaron Boone as the 25th man for October… Sorry TroyD, I had to sneak that one in there :D

    True dat Troy...
I suppose in this case I think a poor start might have larger ramifications than would be typical for another team. Namely rushing Hughes to the majors and possibly watching him throw out his arm ala Kerry Woods when he's zeroing in on 200 ip come October.

But then again, you're right.... it's a marathon of a season. I just relish seeing the Yanks squirm and I'm not even a BoSox fan.

It's all about injuries and pitching in the MLB and NY is hampered by both of those issues right now.

As bad as that was, I still remember watching the ball rolling between Bill Buckner's legs.....after that, nothing surprises me when it comes to the Sox collapsing.

Don't hold your pom-poms to tight they are cutting off your circulation, does anyone remember a 5 game sweep in Boston last year, the ****-kicking is coming don't worry. See you in October. Not only is he the highest paid but right now he is the best. He is in a walk year and stands to make even more money, he will be hot for a long time.

Baseball is a season of 54 games. Every team wins at least 54, and every team loses at least 54. It's the remaining 54 games that matter the most.

I thought I had heard every anecdote imaginable in reference to baseball, but this is a new one to me. Excellent quote.

Just curious how you came up with that? Below are just the record holders, as other teams have gone below the 54 mark in either direction.

Most games lost in a season

    AL - 1916 Philadelphia ... - 36W -117L
    NL - 1899 Cleveland ... - 20W - 134L

    more recent team..

    AL - 2003 Detroit Tigers - 43W -119L

Most Games Won in a season

    AL - 2001 Seattle Mariners - 116W - 46L
    NL - 1906 Chicago 'Black Sox' - 116W - 36L

Well that's not fair, it was actually the 1919 team that was famously named the 'Black Sox'

^^^^ It's more a figure of speech than actual real stats, IMO. History will bear out those numbers pretty closely, on average. Even the 86 Mets went
108-54, not counting the playoffs. Exceptions to every rule, though, as you pointed out.

Exactly. If you looked at the numbers of the 162 game seasons about 99% of the teams won and lost a minimum of 54.

ZB, I can't take credit for the quote. It was actually quoted to me by Dave Littlefield, General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates while we were sharing a quiet moment over a brew.

First you are on tv and now you are friends with the pirates GM, you are pretty famous around here;) .

I'm just curious on how you met him... and if you are friends, tell him to stop playing it safe and spend a little cash on some players!

By the way, my classes are done in two weeks in monroeville and I still didn't get a PM about when I'm heading over again. Its ok, I guess we aren't pittsburgh pals anymore:(

Didn't mean for it come off as questioning your comment, I figured it was a generalization. It’s like the Electoral College... 50 states, but only Ohio, PA & Florida are looked at as the decider.

    Anyway, Good News!!!!!

Here's some Pittsburgh trivia for you, do you recognize these two guys?

Except for a few outliers, its a pretty good comment on teams records. Don't take it so literally.
