Kutaragi's most recent brainchild, the PlayStation 3 console, came out in November but was marred by embarrassing production shortages and a $600 price tag that some Sony fans said was too steep. For the past several months, Sony has resorted to giving away free game titles and other marketing gimmicks to spur sales.


Sony has also struggled to expand beyond the young, male demographic of so-called "hardcore" gamers. Investors have been grumbling for several quarters that Sony has failed to attract women, young children and older gamers to its products, and its market share has shrunk as a result.

Problems related to Sony's limited demographic came into sharp focus late last year, when Nintendo Co. launched a rival game console, the Wii, for about $250. The device - which includes a diminutive, wrist-mounted controller and a console that's skimpy on realistic graphics - has become a surprise hit among girls, suburban mothers, senior citizens and other people who have never considered themselves gamers.

Sony shipped 1.84 million PS3 machines worldwide through Dec. 31. In the same period, Nintendo sold 3.19 million Wii machines worldwide.

The loss to Nintendo prompted Sony Corp. Chief Executive Howard Stringer to escalate his turnaround effort. In November, the Welsh-born executive - one of the first foreign-born CEOs of a major Japanese electronics company - stripped Kutaragi of day-to-day management responsibilities.

But that's the problem with 'facts'. Which facts do you want to believe? I'm not posting this as gospel, just pointing out that arguing about which game machine is better than another is pretty useless just quoting isolated 'facts and figures'. Better to just play what you got and have fun in the games instead of spinning on articles...:D. I think the OP was talking about fixing their 360...

Sony's group sales are expected to rise 6 percent to 8.7 trillion yen in the year to March 2008, the newspaper said, citing a consensus forecast of analysts polled by its financial information service Quick.

Sony should enjoy increased demand for its liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions in the U.S. and European markets, the Nikkei said, noting that Sony planned to boost unit sales of LCD TVs by about two-thirds to 10 million in 2007/08.

But the biggest boost should come from its game division, which is expected to book an operating loss of 200 billion yen in the past business year due to costs related to the launch of the PlayStation 3 video game console, the Nikkei said.

Sony will boost PS3 shipments in 2007/08 by about 67 percent to 10 million units, and should also benefit from better semiconductor production yields and cost-cutting efforts, the newspaper said.

back to bdaley6509 original issue (which I have too). I called them on Monday, and promptly and magically a $139.90 charges showing up magically on my Amex The question is, when will I get the coffin to send back the box? how long? and will I get my console back, or someone else's beat-up refurb with missing faceplate? Mine is literally (albeit broken) MINT, since it has been sitting in the same corner since Christmas '05.

Please post an update. I'd like to know if you get your original box back too. But I guess there's no way to tell if they just change out the internal components for refurbs. That's why I'm thinking of just putting up with my disk read errors as I'm unsure how it will come back.

When I sent mine in, I'm pretty sure the serial # was different, and I did not get the faceplate back that I had sent in.

Thanks Shelby. Yeah, I think I'll just put up with the read errors like you for now. No biggie yet. Just got to remember to save in oblivion, dang it.

I wonder then, they (the MS technicians) have a pile of 360 that has been fixed, and recycle the incoming consoles as these came in with one from the stack, and ship it out. Thus, the turnaround time is fast, since they are not committing of sending you back yours. So, potentially I might get one that has been hacked and modded, with a burnout board? sad.

A friend of mine bought at launch and has had 4 refurb units; one was so filthy that he made MS exchange it. I look after my things, so I wouldnt be happy getting a refurb when ive taken care of my console.

I presume sony are doing the same as ive seen ps3 refurbs for sale.

Wow I leave for a week and I miss such scintillating forum talk. Funny how these things really do divide people. I also find it interesting that my neighbor is a huge Sony fanboy, yet he recently stated that the 360 was one of the best purchases he has ever made console wise.

Me personally no ps3 for me (YES I CAN AFFORD IT!) until it becomes modded. I find it hard to swallow buying a 600 dollar blue-ray player.

Received the coffin today, exactly a week from the day I called support, it is promptly put back enroute to McAllen TX. Now I am crossing my fingers to get back a unit with build date > JAN06!
