Five disc, digital outputs (try some d/a converters down the road), headphone output with volume control (for late night listening).....

They are also selling the same model, refurb for $129.

    Solid player.

I normally don't do this, but I am going to recommend something above your price range. That and the fact it is not a dedicated CDP changer.

    http://www.northamptonaudio.com/nad/T572.asp

A NAD T572 DVD Changer. NAD is a company that puts as much thought into the audio section of it's DVD players as it does the video. I have one of these and use ist strictly for audio. I've never even played a DVD with it. The Marantz is solid...this NAD is much better. If you are going with the $129 refurb Marantz....maybe this would not be worth it to you. I have heard both. Personally, I would spend the extra coin.

    Good point Shack.

Interesting how I've yet to find a one sided coin, you know?

    Cheers,
    Russ

*I have an NAD T-550 (single dvd) in my HT rig, and it's been bullet proof reliable for over 2 years - and it sounds wonderful to boot*

$400  Cheap for a quality CDP.

The Sony SCD CE595 is a well regarded budget SACD changer that can be had for less than $150. The SCD C2000ES is the step up ES version of the 595 for under $300. They are very good SACD changers (especially on a budget). The NAD I mentioned is a better redbook player than either one. If you want a SACD/CD only changer these are your only options new, unless you want to go with some of the older SCD C222ES, SCD C333ES, SCD C555ES...None of which have been built in the last 4 years.

Yamaha makes the DVD-C750 and DVD-C950 multiformat (including SACD) changers, but I've never heard them.

I have this one and the sound is very very good. Not grainy, and dynamic. I paid $200 as a floor model :)

Me? I'd look at a Sony SCD-222ES/SCD-575 (?) and have it modded by Matt at sacdmods.com.

    Reasonable AND outstanding performance.

A Sony changer would be a great idea if you don't want to spend a ton. Sony's have always been solid, even their less than a 150 bones players. between 1997-2001, I ran a $129 Sony CD changer in my main system, it was a great player. I garage saled it for $85.

I have no problem with this recommedation as well. The modded CE775 I bought from you is outstanding. However, If we are still talking about PolkFan1, he would be looking to spend his budget just to find a good used C222ES (slightly less for a CE775), and that's before the $400± in mods.

Ben brought up the SACD, and if PolkFan1 isn't interested in SACD, the Marantz Russ mentioned, the NAD DVD player, the Sony SCD-C2000ES or maybe the Denon DCM-390 would all be good options as he could find them new or reconditioned.

IF he could find a Sony SCD-C222ES in good condition, it is a very good redbook changer even if he never plays a SACD disc. But as I stated they haven't been made in quite some time and finding a decent one might be tough.

Another option for you in the FM

And I'll give another nod to the above mentioned Sony changers. I've had a 555ES for a few years and really like it.

Ignore Dragon and get a changer if that is what you want. ;) I bet he had to make extra trips back and forth on that cold icy floor to adjust the rabbit ears as well.

I currently own 3 changers and my single disc players are pretty much just gathering dust since I rarely use them. There is nothing better than picking out 4 or 5 CDs and loading up the machine for an evening of listening.

No, I don't, but you might want to get off the internet for a while and go visit your local Circuit City, Best Buy, or Tweeter and see if they have any discontinued models of CDP's or Universals.

I was able to pick up a Denon DVD-2910, which is a universal player for $202.00, including tax, just because it was a discontinued unit. Didn't affect the sound, so I don't care. Saved around seven hundred bucks though!:D

I looked at that 2910 before I bought the Marantz DV-8300. I got the Marantz for a killer price, so I took that instead. The Denon is a great player. I haven't found anything under $2000 so far that outdoes my Marantz. I had a few friends bring over a Pioneer DV-09, a Marantz 9000 series, and another Elite, the 79. My Marantz had an easier setup than all of them, and the picture quality was better, at least in my eyes. Couldn't be happier.

As a matter of fact I did :p ..... and we were lucky to get 3 channels, that you could barely see because of the interference BTW.....didn't have a color TV until I was 17.....and we had LP's that you actually had to flip over to listen to the other side
