Brett,
I ran into some of the same problems when I moved from Tucson to MN. What an f-ing nightmare.
A couple of places you might want to visit:

http://www.protectyourmove.gov
Lots of useful information and tips that I would recommend to anyone that's moving or planning to move. If I would have gone there before I moved, it would have saved me a lot of heartache. Unfortunately, you are dealing with the scum of the earth now...moving companies. The websites above describe the different types of "contracts" - non binding, GNTE, etc. It's illegal for them to hold your belongings "hostage", but you would have a very hard time getting any local law enforcement to intervene. Just make the moving company aware that you know your rights, but always remember that they have your stuff, so save the real fighting until after you have your belongings. There is a requirement that the most you are required to pay is 110% of the original estimate at the time of delivery, so you shouldn't have to pay anything over that. If possible, pay with a credit card so you can dispute after the fact. Once you've paid that and have your things, then take the gloves off. Until then, they hold all the cards.
Best of luck to you...I hope it works out okay. -
You might say I have an inside view of moving companies, not all, but some of the bigger ones. To say they are, "the scum of the earth" is not a fair statement.Political Correctness'.........defined

brett my friend you have only just begun, the Feds have moved my **** thousands and thousands of miles, Allied was the first and the worst, hope you got the insurance.
Patience Persistence Preparation will see you through when you get your things back, in my eight moves my stuff has been beat to hell, stolen, smashed, misrepaired. They all low-ball for repair/replacement but Allied was the absolute worst for me, watch out for "stairs" charges.

They also will try to rape you for "Hoist" charges. It's funny cause they have to "hoist" practically everything. -
F1,
Yes, that was too general a statement. I would amend that by saying that most moving companies are the scum of the earth. It's an industry that is regulated by a Federal department that doesn't have the time or resources to regulate. Local authorities can do nothing to help. Their tactics are at best bait and switch and at worst extortion. If anyone else on the planet held all of your belongings hostage and insisted you pay substantially more than you agreed to (in writing) it would be a crime. When dealing with most moving companies, it's expected. It's a joke. The internet is flooded with dishonest moving companies and brokers that are looking to lure prospective customers in with promises of new trucks, guarantees, and the lowest prices. Once they get to your house (late, of course) they change their tune. Their "estimates" are thrown out the window and you are at their mercy. There are some honest movers out there, but I have yet to run into one. Don't take my word for it, just go to movingscam.com and have a look at the horror stories. It's unbelivable to me that this is allowed to take place in our society, but nobody is doing anything about it. My advice would be to move yourself, if at all possible. The good moving companies are extremely busy and understandably very expensive and the bad ones will screw you so badly it could be a life changing experience. -
FWIW--United--Cellitti's out of PA is the best of the lot I have had, although their were still some damages and one box "lost" along with a window airconditioner.
My only advantage is that as the move is paid for by the Gov. (thanks guys), the Gov can hold up paying them, so their tune is slightly different, thats not to say each one has not tried to screw me over though.

Not to mention the items you will find missing... been there, done that, had $15000 worth of redlines ripped off in 2000 w/ our move, insurance took care of that but the cars cannot be replaced easily -
I never move furniture unless it's just across town. Sell what you have before you leave and buy new when you get there. All the other "essential" stuff will then fit in a fairly small u-haul. Well, area's like Boston with narrow streets and houses with smaller than normal doorways and stairwells, yeah, hoisting is more time consumeing so
they will charge more.Try getting a semi down those streets. They have to park miles away, offload your stuff to a smaller truck, then offload again at the destination.Movers cringe when you say Boston to them.Alot of area's in the northeast are like that.HT SYSTEM-
