WARNING: Club Polk will cause 'upgraditis'!

so i was just speaking to a co-worker who wants to ditch his htib. i began giving him some advice and told him to come by sometime to demo my set-up. i then began to explain to him to beware of the bug we've all come to know as 'upgraditis', and to not waste his time upgrading his system with such baby steps or he'll regret it later. now mind you, he'll come and demo my setup and be astounded by the sound compared to what he's got. but while i'm demo'ing, i'll be thinking about some of my fellow polksters' rigs and how much nicer they probably sound. i'm humble and don't want to come off to my friend as an arrogant ****, as i know better systems exist.

that got me thinking... if i did not hear about all your nice rigs here and if i never posted here at club polk, would i feel satisfied with what i already have, or would i STILL begin to feel that there is something lacking in my rig? imagine i never hear anyone else's theater that sounded better. would i ever lust for more? i'm not so sure. (btw, I-SIG's SDA's sure pissed me off and made me want to drop coin on my own set)

i was very pleased upgrading from my sony htib to what i have in my sig. but listening to and watching all of your sigs being upgraded with nicer gear leaves me to feel left behind. i normally would have never even heard of polk lsi series, but so many of you here comment on how much nicer they are compared to rti's that now i want the lsi experience. thank goodness i cannot afford to do so, but i feel somewhat hollow.

i truely believe my upgrade bug is due to this very site that has helped me out along the way. don't hate me for being selfish and wanting more/better. it's not my fault alone, you know. you have all had a hand in my self-indulgence.:D

what say you? is club polk your crux as it is mine? must i thwart this insatiable appetite for more by saying goodbye to you fine folk?

i suppose i must just forgive you all and continue on.

I was commenting just yesterday to a coworker that if not for the internet, not just our Club here, I would not be in this hobby at all. For me the continuance and entry of this hobby is totally dependent on the internet for me.

agree. it's not just CP, it's also AVS, in my case. but it sort of blows that i couldn't just be happy after my first mega-upgrade from what i once had. it's never enough.

    This site got me going.

I had maybe two grand into my system before I came her and discovered just how pathetic my attempt at high end really was.

Now I have alot more in it and I think I could do better.

Thats why I haven't been around lately, right now I am broke and jonesing for some better pieces.

EXACTLY! i must admit, though, i live vicariously through some posters here. like whenever wingnut gets a new sub, i feel like i get to enjoy it with her. and now i see dave/demi has some lsi's, and i'm happy. makes me feel 'lacking' in my own equipment, but i still like to see others 'movin' on up'.:)

I came here looking for a way to swivel mount my wife's RT25i on the wall because I thought they were too good to have stuffed away in the bedroom. At the time, I had a nice Take 5.2 system for the HT powered by a Denon 2802. I never even thought about having a separate 2 channel system, let alone a vinyl rig. Since then, I upped the receiver, went to RT800i, got a big SVS tube sub, got a Denon universal player (2900), and started a 2 channel system, which has taken over everything. A day doesn't go by without me thinking about getting a separate phono stage, or better cartridge, or something for that damn 2 channel system. Curse this place!
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

i must report that i'm still in my infancy of all this A/V jazz. i never felt it necessary to have a dedicated two-channed rig. but now my feelings are changing. but it will cost me so much money to delve into this affair. so i have to wait. but waiting is so damned hard!

like you, bill, i only came here to investigate the new/cheaper monitor series polk offers at circuit city. welp, right off the bat i read how rti's were the way to go (couldn't afford lsi), and that was the path i took. nevermind i could hardly afford to do so.

There is some truth to it.

I was buying a new couch with my girlfriend at a local all-in-one electronics and furniture store and heard this crazy **** cool system by Polk Audio. These were all dinky little satelites and I was blown away.

I started asking about speaker companies at another website that has nothing to do with audio and Phuz, one of the OGs of Club Polk, told me about Polk Audio and Energy. I ended up taking his word for it and buying the Polk RM600 (I think  ) system off of eBay and then getting a Polk Sub along with it.

He then told me to come over here and ask questions. That's pretty much when it started. Didn't take long for the satelite Polk speakers to end up in a box collecting dust.

I'm planning on being done when I have full LSi, B & K Pre-Amp, and a new SVS sub.

I say don't worry about what everyone else has. If you can't afford it, budget it out. Buy one piece at a time. No rule saying you must have LSi15s, LSi9s, and the LSiC all at one crack.

Trying to keep up with the Jones', or in this case Club Polk, is only going to lead to financial ruin. There isn't a damn thing wrong with the system you have now. It's better than most, but that's really beside the point. What matters most is that you really enjoy what you have.

I fully recognize that I don't have the ear that needs to be fed by Martin Logan & McIntosh equipment.

For a while I was considering a two channel system but then I realized I would have to sit still to enjoy it.
When I listen to music it is always in the background and never just a sit and listen session.
I can not sit still long enough to enjoy a whole album.

    Movies hold my interest. (usually)

For me the real thing that keeps the hobby alive is the used market. I'm not the type of guy thats going to spend much money on retail priced speakers and gear. At least not very often at all. If not for the used market, which needs the internet to survive (I'm not subscribing to newspaper want ads from all over the country), I would not put much energy into a hobby where I know I can't make moves in gear except once in a blue moon.

Yeah, the used market opens up soo many possibilities! I mean, I've got a receiver that was like 2 grand new, and I grabbed it for less than $500. Same goes for all my stuff.

The only thing in my system(s) that were bought new, were the TVs, my Denon DVD player (clearance sale), my HDTivo, one pair of RT25i (present for my wife before we were married), and maybe a phono cartridge or new stylus.

This lets me have a 2 channel system that would have sold for more than $6000 for less than $2000.

I agree that used is more fun and at the end of the day financially superior to new. I work in an automorive electronics mfg and the quality and reliability of electronics has never been better. If the parts can live through the first 2 hours of their life they will likely last 10 years, barring overstress.

I too now want to get LSi's (as least 2 of them for a 2 channel rig) even though I've never heard them and to me my RTi's that I have sound perfectly OK.

I too now look for deals on the internet and have bought several things off of ebay with no problems so far.

The best thing about this place is you can talk to people who understand your passion. My wife and my daughter just don't understand why I get so excited about audio equipment. Everytime I get a new "Audio Advisor" catalog in the mail, my wife always says "Oh, shoot!, I should have thrown that away!" and I tell her "You better not!".

I was never into home audio until becoming a member of this forum back in September of '01 at the age of 20. I originally joined here because I had bought some Polk car speakers for my truck. I soon realized that home audio was so much more important than car (for me at least) and decided to devote all my money and time to the home side. I didn't pick up my first pair of home Polk's until I moved to IL from LA and bought a pair of RTi70's just about three years ago. I just picked up a pair of LSi15's last weekend and am expecting a tube preamp to arrive any day now. 'Upgraditis' has fully hit me at this point. I'm newly single and got a nice raise yesterday (after only six months with my new company!), so I plan on purchasing some better gear in the coming months. My focus for the next couple of months is going to be getting some good furniture though. I really like the Sanus Natural Cherry series and am going to be buying a tv stand, six-shelf audio rack, coffee table and CD storage. After that, a new CD player will be in the works. Club Polk and Polk Audio have really made me appreciate the quality reproduction of music.

I find that any messaged board causes "upgraditis". If it wasn't for Corvetteforum, I probably would have only done a intake and exhaust on the car. Now I have over 400rwhp, roll bar, etc..
I found the only cure is to run out of money. If it wasn't for purchasing a house 2 years ago, I would have a much faster car and a nicer home theater. All in time I guess.

that's my 'cure' as well. no money. or giving up hobby could work as well. sometimes i can understand why some people run off to become monks. even the amish got it all figured out.
