I was just looking at msrp prices on all my gear and it came to 9100.00 give or take a few bucks,so how do you figure what your used worth would be from that msrp?Is there an audio version of NADA?Or do we just go by what things are selling for on ebay?I'd like to see how you guys value your systems worth at the used price.Just in case I ever sell I'd like to have a good idea.

About 1/3rd of retail, for most used gear. Esoteric, rare, and junk aside.

Orion Blue Books has a pay online service, as well as yearly printed hard copy books available. Audiogon.com also has a online blue book service, pay per search or subscription.

A few members here, such as myself pay for these services and are happy to help members out. Post a particular question, you'll usually get an answer.

At the end of the day, the basic answer is 'whatever someone is willing to pay'. ;)

    Cheers,

Russ... you can pay per search?
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Audiogon is $19.95 for 30 days, $49.95 for a year.

My system, audio, video, stand, power conditioners, cables and interconnects were all purchased at seprate times over several years.
Some were purchased new and some used.

I spent between $15,000 and $20,000 on everything.

Damn, now I feel like I should sell off some of the stuff I am not using.

Most of my major speaker components cost me 50%-60% of retail, used. That's for fairly recent (last 5-10 years) gear that's still reasonably "in demand". Upper mid-fi or lower-hifi level. Gear that's older and/or suffers from reduced enthusiasm can go for significantly less. Also, the really high-end, huge-margin stuff that's still readily available tends to have a HUGE discounts on the used market. Really recent, really popular gear in the bugdet hifi class tends to have very stingy discounts for used pieces on audiogon.

Discontinued (most of the good ones have been) super high end headphones are another matter - those have been going UP in value the last few years. Many of them now have used market values that match or exceed their MSRPs; in most cases the street prices were substantially less than MSRP when they were available. I've had a number of mine go up in value; that's partially how I justify having $10K+ worth in headphones, I guess :D That and I can't approach their level of bass quality with any speakers in a rectangular room.

$36,576.54 if I bought it all new. I keep track of the main systems costs, and what I paid for it. What I paid is $23,547.03. If I added in the three other systems the first number would jump by ~3000 putting me just shy of $40,000.

I have been watching the used markets (the gon, ebay, etc) lately for a few specific components. You can usually take a month or so and track what equipment is actually selling at...and there you go....there's your value.

I could never buy new to replace what I currently have bought in the used market and coudln't be happier.

If I had to buy everything new my HT system would be just over 13k, but I only payed a little under 4k due to getting all my speakers for free, and a few other pieces either free or heavily discounted.

Not sure about my 2ch due to constant changes.

In your showcase, what are you main speakers? I have seen pictures before, but can't remember what they are. Some of the most awesome looking speakers I have ever seen!

[Edit] Are they the Gallo Reference 3s? Since you divulged what you had invested in your system, may I ask how much they required? Otherwise, I think it would be bad form to ask what someone paid...

    Same here Halo.

About $15K in the reference 2ch rig, $1K in a grunt 2ch rig, $200 in the garage rig, $5K in the whole house audio system, and about $2K in the HT rig.

Of course, the whole house, and ref 2ch are sans turntable at the moment, but ballparked, yeah, that's where I'm at now.

    Cheers,

*hey, just for reference, I drive a Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 2002, worth about $9K*

Wouldn't THAT be a neat thread? What's your audio tally, vs your (not your wife and kids too) auto tally. Just to see if who's REALLY nuts about audio? (or just plain nuts?)

For a vintage table the Thorens 125 is pretty highly regarded....

As far as my 2ch rig? Priceless.

    New? Around 15K.

More than I care to admit. Its gotten to the point if I upgrade it cost me a lot now.:D Usally when I tell someone that I got some new toy / upgrade they ask how much, Then I tell them in a whisper and they yell %#@X&* dollars? REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

The retail price is irrelevant. Most people don't pay the artifically inflated retail price anyway.

If the question is -- "How much is your system worth?", then the answer should be how much you could sell it for on the used market.

My 2-channel system is worth about $2,000 in components.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

    DaveMuell,

They are Gallo Reference 3.1s. I have the Reference Centers for surrounds and dues in the rear, but I have Reference AVs on the way to replace the Centers, and the Centers will be delegated to the rear.

I don't think this site has an issue with posting prices, so I paid $2499 plus tax for my 3.1s new from an authorized dealer. I would have bought them used but at the time I waited 4 weeks and didn't see a single pair appear on audiogon or ebay.

    Jared

P.S. If we are looking at avg. used prices the main system drops to ~$17,000. Of course this is all not taking into account items purchased and replaced, I have around 5k worth of gear to sell if I weren't so lazy.

I have friends who cringe when I tell them how much I spend. Some have that stupid Bose wave radio and tell me "Yeah man, this sounds great, why would you spend so much?" That is till they come over and listen.
Funny story....upstairs my wife has a Bose system hooked up to a Sony AVR and a Sony mega changer that holds 100 cd's.Before I upgraded, that mega changer was packed to the gills with all her favorite music.Now....that sucker sits empty, not one cd in it. So I will agree, the cost?? Priceless.I know there is a Visa commercial in here somewhere.

I consider 1/3 of msrp a "really great deal" and it doesn't happen all that often, especially on any particular item you are looking for. That stuff is usually something that just pops up now and then. I think 40% to 60% of msrp is a good average for solid items such as speakers and amps if you are willing to shop around a little. For timely things like processors, dvd players etc they can drop to 5% the day a newer idea comes out. I don't really agree with the blue book values. Some less, some more, too many mistakes. For example, one speaker they will list price as a pair and another will be priced each with no comment either way. They also take age into account more than the general buying public does.
