I kinda get the idea,if you have spent quite alot and are happy with the outcome you'll lose out by selling. So you might as well keep what you have because most of us are at our budget limit anyway.I know I'll never be able to afford some of the gear I've seen in some shops costing over 10,000 for a pair of towers,I'm pretty much limited to the 2 or 3000 level there.I've seen a whole speaker system like mine sell for around 800 and I wonder why in the hell are they selling so cheap? The whole thing new was over 4 grand.I guess stereo is much like PC in that everything loses it's value right after you buy it.

    powerlord,
Unless you are older and on a fixed income I think you will be supprised about up-gradeitis.

I used to think I could never afford a "better system" and then I found this place.

The thing about upgrading for me is I listen to the new component before I sell the old one so I can make sure I like the change.
Problem is... I rarely sell the old equipment.

I intend to upgrade again but from here the upgrades are pricey.

Im an estimate of about 15,000 bucks at the time of purchase minus shipping the sub and Rti12s to Japan, of course some of the items I have now are way cheaper. I couldnt be happier with the HT gear I have now though. I estimate the 2 channel bedroom theater to be about 3400 bucks and thats mainly due to the 60 inch Sony XBR. ;)

What's my stuff WORTH, I don't know. I do know what I paid, all used yard/estate sale buys. I'll only focus on my main 2chnl system:

    Polk CRS+ $30 (plus $100 tweeter upgrades) so $130
Sony TA 2000 TOL Vintage preamp $40
    NAD 218THX 225wt amp $75
    Nakamichi Music Bank CD $30
    HSU Powered Sub $50
Denon 52F TT with Signet cartidge $15
Sansui 999 Vintage Tuner (traded for a plate worth maybe $20) $20

So.. I'm in for $360 total.
However it must have depreciated further with age for the past couple of years so lets lop another $100 off for "current" market price so my system must be worth $260.

Damn, thats a lot of cash I've got tied up into it. I better start looking for some better deals.

I just noticed that the most expensive component of my entire system (and only new item) were the 2 replacement Polk tweeters.

My system cost me no more than $1K. All of the components were purchased new from authorized dealers. Somehow, I get more fun out of obtaining good sound for little money.

I normally think in terms of budgeting for future upgrades. 5% of income (after taxes) spent per year sounds reasonable to me but most years I spend more. When all is said and done it can be sold off if necessary for retirement. :)

Rad. I drive a 98 Honda Civic worth probably about 4 large. The retail on my CDP is about half that. If I total up all my HT/2Ch electronics including HT display my audio to car expense ratio is about 5:1, going off retail prices.

Well I just made a rough calculation based on what I bought this stuff for (much of it used on ebay) plus a few new components. I left out the gear that is NOT in use at this time...the total came to $14,000. Actually, not as bad as I thought.

That Sota turntable must be very nice. I was watching one (with SME IV arm) on ebay that just sold for $2300. By the way, if you are looking to unload any of the receivers, Jonesy has a thread in the electronics section that might indicate an interest to power a pair of Polk 5jr's.
