Lead Shot for Speaker Stands

Where can I buy this stuff? My stands will be arriving on Thursday, as well as my ebony LSi9s, and I want to do it the right way first.

Also, I've heard stuff about some blue putty or something like that to brace the speakers to the stands. What is the correct name, and where can I find that?

Thanks for the help.

Any good sporting goods store like Dick's, or any gun shop that sells reloading supplies. Don't be afraid to handle the shot, just wash your hands afterwards before you make your self a sandwich. As far as attaching a satellite to a stand, I use proper fasteners. A nice allen-head 1/4-20 machine screw from underneath the the stand up into a 6-prong T-nut inside the speaker cabinet. It's easy and it's not "mickey mouse". No worries about someone knocking it off at a party.

I got small gauge steel shot. It’s not as heavy, but if you spill it, you don’t have to worry about poisoning any kids....

    Funny but true.

When I was setting up for MD Polkfest I had one leg of my 2CH rack pop open and shoot 30lbs of lead shot all over the living room. It was a PITA.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

An easier solution might be Non Odor Kitty litter, I use it in the bases of my Totem speakers and it was recommended to me from Vince.

Can anyone else speak on this? I was under the assumption that lead shot was preferred partly because it is heavy in comparison to other grains (per cubic foot).

I've heard of that method before and there's nothing wrong with it. It's completely up to you but I prefer shot.

I used #9 lead shot. Its smaller size allowed it to fill every nook and cranny of the racks I use. When you strike the rack with a metal object you hear a very very dull thud. When I first started filling the rack, I spilt quite a bit and used me trusty Orek vacuum cleaner and cannister and it came right up out of the rug. I simply poured it out of the bag and reused it. I washed my hands not because I was afraid of lead poisoning but because they were dirty.

Whatever you do DON'T USE SAND!!! This stuff is a nightmare it attracts moisture and then turns moldy and mildewy. It is also a pain in the butt to use and keep. If you've ever been to the beach you know what a house on the beach is like. . . an endless piece of sandpaper.

I've found that undergarments of recently "liberated" local hitchhikers provide tighter bass and a deeper soundstage.....but that's just me.

You can order "Blu-tack" from audioadvisor.com. I ordered some. I don't know if it is any different or better than the white colored stuff that you can buy at any office supply store for sticking posters to the wall.

Well guys, my stands came today. Purchased the Target FS 28" models. Quite a solid design! After adding 25lbs of leadshot to each one, they were that much more solid. One 25lb bag nearly filled the poles. I have maybe 2-3" left on all four pillars. Do you guys recommend I top it off with something, or should they be fine the way they are?

I'm glad I picked the 28" over the 24". The tweeters are RIGHT at ear level. :D

Dane, I filled my all the way to the top with shot. When I tap the rack with a screw driver or some other metal object a get a very dull, faint, thud. You can get some sorbothane pods from the Tweak Shop (they are called "Black Holes") for $5 apiece and stuff them in there if you don't want to spring for more shot.

In my living room I have Sanus Natural Foundation Speaker stands in Cherry finish. I have my Polk RTi38, also Cherry finish, on them. They aren't the sturdiest stands in the world, but the WAF is very high. They look very nice in the living room.

I also have a pair of Sanus Steel Foundations that I'm not using right now. They are sitting in my garage at the moment. They are very sturdy. I ordered them from Audio Advisor just going by the picture in the AA catalog. I really didn't think they would be that sturdy, but I was pleasantly surprised. The curved piece of steel that forms that base is much thicker and heavier gauge that it appears in the picture. Also, the posts are heavy and sturdy. The finish is also very nice, a heavy coat of crinkle finish black paint. I bought them to use at work, but my company got reorganized and I was forced to move to a different building. I lost my nice office with a window and now sit in a 6' X 6' cubicle in "cubicle rat land". So, no more listening at work except through earbud headphones occasionally.

Forgot to mention. I got a new Audio Advisor catalog in the mail and they had something new I had not seen before. It looks similar to lead shot but is made of stainless steel. It is called "Apollo Sound Bytes". I could not find them on their website, maybe they haven't updated it yet. I even tried searching on "APOLLOBYTE" which is the product code in the catalog, but it said "Not found". The catalog price is $49.00 for a 22 lb. container or $85.00 for a 44 lb container.

I've got a set of Target HR24's, which are supposed to "reference" quality stands. I haven't filled them will lead shot yet, as I haven't set up the system in the living room, but they wil be used soon. Here are the ones I bought: http://www.audio-direct.com/item.aspx?ItemID=c567c34d-d349-4768-890c-8ac2ae9a34dc&origin=desc

The better picture of them is at audioadvisor: http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=TGMR

If I had more of a market for speaker stands, I would just get set up with Target's distributor, so if there are more than 2-3 of you that want some, let me know and i can look into it more.

Hi Dane, we've got a pair of Sanus UF's and they recommend shot in their paperwork which comes with the stands. These stands with the LSi9's on them are some of the sturdiest stands we've ever experienced! Good luck and enjoy!

Congrats Dane. The cost of the shot (IMO) outweights the sound improvement. I have all 5 stands filled to the brim.

The new sound bytes stuff looks like steel shot at several times the price you can buy it at the shooting supplies store! Of course it will be audiophile quality, probably spit on by Ray Kimber to make it official!
