I ordered the yet to be released (2/28) 3 SACD plus a DVD collectors box set last night from Acousticsounds. Yeah, it was $90 and that bites. But, the ad stated that this release was limited to 300 pressings, so it might become a nice collectors set. Of course, it could be the marketing department's way of getting a big sale. Who knows, they may have pressed 30,000. I thought I'd give everyone a heads up who was considering this album.

Joe, did you order it yet? :D;):)

I just got the hybrid cd/sacd/hdcd version and man what a great recording it is. I'm going to order it on vinyl as well. I will have to check out this set though.

The box set is a multi channel hybrid also. Plus it has 20 minutes of previously unreleased material. I'm not sure what on the DVD (exactly).

    Check it out HERE

Yeah Carl I heard the same thing except it was 500 copies but I don't get it. . . 3 or 500 copies of a digital medium . . . big deal. If they said limited to 500 vinyl pressings then I would say wonderful because after 500 (according to MFSL years ago) the stamp vinyl starts to degrade. I have every version of Jazz at the Pawnshop which has every piece that Gert Palmcrantz recorded. I just recently purchased the 2 SACD set. So now I have two different vinyl sets, two different CD sets, and 1 SACD set. I guess someone took home movies of the three night sessions at that little bar in Sweeden and converted it to DVD??? These recordings took place in 1976 good homemade video producted sucked at best.

As much as I love Jazz at the Pawnshop, I'm gonna wait this one out and see what it produces. Ninety more dollars for more for what I already have and love is a little steep and I already have it in the four formats (I forgot to mention the cassettes).

PS: I've been on top of this one for about three weeks now.

What's the best redbook CD version of this to buy? I'm old school, no vinyl and no multi-channel audio :o

IMO the Proprius Jazz at the Pawnshop double CD set. The Volumes 1, 2, & 3 are pretty good also but I think the original double CD set has more presence and air around the instruments and so did a guy who robbed my condo 10 years back a just took that one CD along with some audio and video gear and a couple of guns LOL. However if you can't find the double cd set, Vols 1, 2, & 3, kick the daylights out of any redbook cd.

This is confusing. I've heard this title come up too many times not to get it. I find many that "look" the same, but are different.

Looks like theres a V1, V2, V3, and another one that has all of V1 plus a couple more from V3.

Someone just tell me what to buy. Which is *THE* one to have? I'm not big into Jazz, but like most any good music. I don't have a SACD player. Thanks.

Get the double CD if you can, if you can't then get JATP vol 1.

probably wont go wrong either way, but Joe's (hearingimpared) advise is probably spot on. since I have an Oppo that will play sacd (I just never used it for sacd yet.........yes.....I'm an idiot) so I'll probably get the hybrid like Fireman32 has

speaking of that, dave, come early Friday and bring the disc, I want to spin it in the oppo to see what my theater will do with sacd

Haven't you read the industry news? Vinyl is the new "in" thing for audio! I keep seeing articles about its come-back and the cottage industry that produces new vinyl albums. So I'm considering those of us that have red-book CD only as the new "old school" audio crowd ;)

I'm a weak, weak, poor excuse of a man!!! I let an email ad from the Elusive Disc sucker me right into buying the 30th aniversary set. . . plus the 200 gm LP of Aqualung. Another $125 in the hole.

I had to send my double 180 gm JATP LP back cause they were damaged. I've been waiting for the replacement so long that my tongue is starting to get rug burn from wagging in wait.

I just ordered up the Jazz at the Pawnshop XRCD vol 1&2 release from audiophile resources. I've bought a couple of other XRCD's from this eBay seller, and have been very impressed with them. We'll see if I continue to be impressed with this one!

I read on elusive disc that on the DVD they interview some of the musicians and the guys who recorded the stuff. I don't think it actually has any music on it, but I may be wrong. I ordered the limited edition set last Saturday from elusive disc.

So, what's the final word on the 3 SACD + DVD set of JATP, comapred to all the various other SACD, K2HDCD, and XRCD versions?

90 bucks is a bit steep. It would be the most I've ever paid for a single title. But you do get 3 discs plus DVD. On the other hand, if the sound quality of one of the 2-disc sets is better I'd probably go that way instead. Unless the DVD is really worth having.

This SACD set of JATP sounds spectacular! I put it on a par with my heavy vinyl two LP set. The SACD gives more weight to the music and terrific pinpoint 3D imaging as well as wide holographic soundstage. The instruments come out of pitch blackness. You'll swear you are sitting in that little jazz club amonngst the patrons.

    HIGHLY recommended.

There's a lot of good JATP out there on vinyl. Verve I think. The "Drum Battle" and the "Trumpet Battle" come to mind. The Ella Set is good too.

Yep, I paid a lot more when it first came out way back when.

Larry, you should seriously consider the heavy vinyl 2 LP set too. It will knock your socks off.

    http://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=detail&Title_ID=7087

It's back ordered in the link above but you should be able to find it elsewhere.

BTW I paid more for that too way back when.

    Hello,
Jazz at the Pawnshop was recorded using a high speed half track Revox A77. Has anyone been able to make out what the person is saying at the very beginning of cut one? There's something about "....by first of September", but I've not figured out everything the person is saying. Maybe an SACD and a pair of Stax headphones is needed.
    Enjoy, Ken

Thanks a lot there pal, like I needed another thing to become obsessive about!!!:D:p;)

BTW you forgot to mention that that Revox A77 was setup in the kitchen of that jazz club and that Lars Erstrand had to fix some squeaky fans in his vibes with some corn oil  from said kitchen. :D

Sorry, my friend! At one time I thought it said "..call me by first of September" but I can't be sure.
I didn't know the kitchen location part of the story, that's cool. I used to know the model of the microphones, but I'm too lazy to look on the album notes. I used to use the Proprius and Opus records to demo audio gear. I must have heard Pawnshop a thousand times, as well as the Christmas choral record. It never failed to create an immediate connection with the listener.
