Highly recommended album. These guys are big time now (#2 on the Billboard? wow!). Well deserved.

Acoustics are well done also. I think all the Shins albums sound good on good speakers.

Dig it!

I love The Shins... have for years.
This will be my next purchase. For some reason, I enjoy their music during the summer. Random...
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

The second song is stellar as well. In fact, whenever a discussion comes up regarding the best opening two songs of any album (and yes, that is the sort of conversation me and my infinitely dorky friends have), someone always mentions the first two tracks on Chutes:D

Wasn't it Portman's vote of celestial confidence which brought them into the mainstream?

Yeah, Garden State definitely helped them as well.

They're a great band, but I fear their concerts will be forever ruined due to the hipster dolt teenage crowd which I just can't ignore. ;)

    What about STP Core?

Lead-off hitter Dead and Bloated, followed up with Sex Type Thing. . . then, Wicked Garden hitting in the third spot?

They had a good showing on Austin City Limits if you get a chance to see it.

Thanks to Demi for starting me on MMJ, which led me to find some other great bands. Some names have been bounced around before, but if you like the Shins, check out:

    My Morning Jacket - Z
Decemberists - Picaresque and Crane Wife
Yo La Tengo - I'm Not Afraid of You and I'll Beat Your **** (nice!)
Silversun Pickups - Carnavas (more rock)
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment (if you like KC, Maximo Park is really close)
Kings Of Leon - Youth and Young Manhood (southern rock'ish)
Built to Spill - You in Reverse (another great first song, and Doug Martsch lives across the street from a friend of mine)
Gomez - How We Operate (more pop'ish)
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise (very mellow, if you like one song you'll like them all)
    Pete Yorn - Musicforthemorningafter

Excellent, thanks! Check out Maximo Park... they're oddly similar.

I remember now, I think you are I are on the same page too... MMJ, Electric Six, et al. Keep them coming please, that list will give you an idea of what I like. I spend 2 hours a day in the car, so I live by my tunes.

BTW: Got Okonokos last week... an arm-full of beer and that dvd made me pretty happy.

I've been following MMJ for over 10 years now... I used to watch Jimmy James and the boys practice in their garage as Month of Sundays back in the day.
There is no better live band out there IMO. I just wish a lot of you guys could have seen them when they were playing all the dives around town. Certainly more polished now. And their live show is a bit more elaborate. But you can only imagine all that energy packed into a small room with no real stage to speak of. Manic.

Add Iron & Wine and Damien Rice to that. I'm going to go see Pete Yorn in March; can't wait!.

I think we need a thread that is "Good music you've never heard of" that keeps a running list of these, I know they are scattered all across the forum. Maybe even a rating thing where people can add + or - points to a certain artist or album

Just got back from the Shins at Congress Theater in Chicago. Very good show. Surprisingly, most of the set was from their first two albums.

If I had a complaint, it would be too big of a venue, too many Gardenstate fans. But who am I to complain about 20-year-old girls on x? That should be a bonus, now that I think about it.

EDIT: Best song was definitely Turn a Square, no doubt.

Starting this baby back up again. . .

Got the album on Thursday of last week, with my Senn HD-580's off amazon. I think it was something like $130 for the two items shipped, and probably two of my best audio purchases of recent memory.

I've listened to the album all the way through about 10 times, including three times today. I love it. Absolutely, through and through. Great music. Don't even flip to my favorite song because they all deserve a listen.

Also, on a side note, I'm thinking of selling off my two channel system and just rocking the headphones. I don't even need an amp as my new-old Sony SCD-222ES has a headphone jack and amp built in. Phones rock, even though the open design let's everyone within proximity enjoy the music with you :)

Great advice to buy this album!!!! Thanks, cstpeter.
