Another stupid lawmaker

California parents could face jail and a fine for spanking their young children under legislation a state lawmaker has promised to introduce next week.

Democratic Assemblywoman Sally Lieber said such a law is needed because spanking victimizes helpless children and breeds violence in society.

"I think it's pretty hard to argue you need to beat a child," Lieber said. "Is it OK to whip a 1-year-old or a 6-month-old or a newborn?"

Lieber said her proposal would make spanking, hitting and slapping a child under 4 years old a misdemeanor. Adults could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Aides to the assemblywoman said they are still working on a definition for spanking.

Note how she goes from spanking to "beat" and "whip", but what really cracks me up is the last sentence, "...they are still working on a definition for spanking." WTF???

This lady has some serious issues and has no business being a lawmaker! Hopefully, she hasn't added to the gene pool.

So you put the parent in jail for a year for spanking a child, then the child is without a parent during that time. In this instance, the child gets punished twice?

What 4 yr old doesn't deserve a spanking now and then?
Hell, what 15 yr old doesn't deserve a slap upside the head?

I suppose Sally has some bright ideas of who's going to pay for these incarcerations and the cost of child care. California Democrat thinking has been leaning steeper to one side in recent years.

The really bizarre part is that when these children who never got spanked get into their middle teens and cause trouble in society it will again in the minds of lawmakers like this also be the parents fault.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies ( adults, not children, are in charge)

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year- old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Panadol, sun lotion or a Band Aid to a student - but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband, churches became businesses, and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by three stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame, and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realize d he was gone.

If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the growing majority and do nothing.

CA: Prisoners to be sent to private prisons around the country

Inmates to be sent out of state, Schwarzenegger declares an emergency to ease extreme overcrowding.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a prison overcrowding emergency Wednesday in California, paving the way for inmate transfers to out-of-state institutions within a month.

Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Secretary James Tilton said that the state is on the verge of signing no-bid, sole-source contracts with three private prison companies and that he expects to begin sending inmates to Indiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Arizona at a rate of 100 to 200 a month within 30 days.

State prison guards' salaries surge from overtime

SACRAMENTO - Guards in California prisons are working massive amounts of overtime because of overcrowding and other strains on the prison system, bumping 6,000 officers' salaries upward of $100,000 a year.

Overtime costs rose 24 percent in the third quarter of this year over the same period last year, payroll records show, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Most of the high earners are rank-and-file correctional officers, the records show. Others include sergeants, lieutenants, medical assistants and parole agents working for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The biggest payout, $252,570 in the fiscal year that ended in June, went to a lieutenant.

That is more than Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's salary as California's highest official; the governor declines the pay, which is set at $206,500 for 2007. More than 1,600 officers' earnings exceeded legislators' 2007 salaries of $113,098.

San Quentin officials to lift quarantine after outbreak

After an outbreak of norovirus that sickened hundreds of inmates and staff, prison officials planned today to lift a nearly three-week quarantine at San Quentin State Prison.

Vomiting, diarrhea and other flulike symptoms virtually shut down the prison to new inmates, volunteers and visitors since Dec. 28, prison spokesman Lt. Eric Messick said.

At its height, the virus was infecting about 50 new inmates each day, he said. By Tuesday, just two new cases were reported prisonwide, and health officials agreed to lift the quarantine at 12:01 a.m. today.

"We've hit numbers that it's safe to resume normal operations," Messick said.

The virus resulted in no deaths or serious complications, and most inmates recovered in about three days. In all, 859 inmates and 49 staffers fell ill during the outbreak, he said.

"I've been here 25 years," Messick said. "I can remember the flu going around, but nothing like this."

    Sally, thanks for the brainstorm.

I can just see it now: A parent running after the 2 year old "Time Out" ... "Time Out" ... splat, as the little tyke is run over by a car.

The younger a child is, the less reasoning they have, this is especially true under 4 years old. A parent needs a well established "NO" to prevent injury and sometimes death. The only way to establish that at a young age, is with a slap or spanking.

Good parenting has nothing to do with whether you spank or not. It's about following thru when you tell you child what the consequences are. I smacked my son's butt all of 2 hits when he was growing up. Instead, my wife and I followed thru on threats of grounding, taking away things, etc.. My parents did the same with me, and my wife's parents did the same with her. We didn't try to be his best friend, instead we focused on being fair but consistent, and open to "listening" to his opinion.

So does this mean that when said child turns 5 years old it is ok to spank his/her ****????

Seems to me that the earlier you spank, the older they get less spankings will be necessary because said child will have already learned at a younger age what you will or will not tolerate.
