Yes, a nice start and wouldn't make a bad pre amp / processor if you wish in the future, if it has pre amp outputs which I think it does.

There's an Onkyo 7.1 Channel Home A/V Receiver (TXSR804) running a mixed set of Polk/JBL speakers in the entertainment center at my second job, and it
    coasts along quite nicely.

It does have pre-outs, which opens things up for you in the future if you choose the seperates route.

Here's a link for Onkyo's site that offers refurbished units. They don't have any refurbed TXSR804's, but keep an eye on it if that's the route you take:

    http://www.shoponkyo.com/products.cfm?group_id=1&subcat=Receiver

For the listed MSRP of $999, though, others may have some suggestions on different manufacturers to look at.

Don't be in a hurry; new stuff is coming.

    ok here goes.

a receiver.. or AVR as they are now called because they include video switching

a receiver has everything all in one unit.
it has a AM/FM tuner, a pre amp and an amp all in one unit. there are hundreds of brands of receivers on the market. all price ranges from about $80 on up to several thousand dollars.

a pre amp is just a one piece that lets you select what you want to listen to.. ie: tuner, CD's, turntable, tape deck, etc. that's all it does.. it does not amplify the signal and you can not hook up speakers to it.

a integrated amp is a pre amp AND an amp in one unit. it's like the pre amp above, PLUS is has built in amps.. so you CAN hook up speakers to an integrated amp.

finally, a power amp.. this can be mono, which is one channel only. Stereo which is two channels, tri amp.. 3 channels, 4 channel amp, 5, and 7 channel amp.

finally you have a stand alone AM/FM tuner. all it does it bring in radio stations. a stand alone tuner in most cases will be better than the tuner built into your recevier.

that should just about cover it..

*side note.. some stand alone pre amps. have tuners in them as well. I forgot that.

AND yes you can use a receiver as a pre amp IF it has pre outputs on the back of it. if not. you can not. period

you have two options for amps.. get a 5 channel amp. say an Adcom or other brand to drive all your speakers.. OR get only a two channel amp of your choice like Adcom for only your front speakers.. then have your recevier power the center and rears. 5 channel amps are pricey.. well to me they are pricey. LOL

I have an Onkyo TXSR702 and like it. Like mine, the TXSR804 has a 5 band (3 on subwoofer) digital equalizer on each channel. Fun stuff, if you are in to it (autoset or none, if you are not).

Dude, its just like in car audio.

A receiver is like a head unit as in its a horrible power source. Itll work if all youre wanting is some tunes or you live in an apartment or something but in order to get the best sound out of your speakers, you need more power and that means a dedicated amp. ;)

Im a little out of my element on this but I have been seriously considering doing away with a 5.1 system once we get a house and instead spend all the money on a set of really good stereo speakers and then get a very stout amp to push them and thie Rotel is what I was looking at.

Rotel aint the most expensive or exotic brand in the HA market but from what I can tell thru reading and talking to people is that theyre still a good quality brand that makes solid products for a decent price.

This 200x2 amp is the one I was most considering along with a pair of RTi10's.

Read the manual. It will tell ya how much power you should be using. Then go out and find the best quality amp that you can afford that comes closest to matching those power ratings. Nuttin' to it.
