Are the Best Speakers the Big Ones?

It might also depend upon the type of music and the experience you're after. Sid apparently prefers female vocals backed by someone plucking at a harp. I, on the other hand, enjoy guitar-based rock music. For my application, the large SDA's could never be replaced by a bookshelf speaker. I would be left terribly bored by the comparison.

Hehe...
I do both...
Korn, Disturbed, yada yada -- but the SDAs suck at that type of music, so I dont get your point...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Listen to a pair of monitors built to the BBC LS3/5a specification -- Matt Polk did, when he and friends were designing the original Monitor 7 and 10.
If you want to hear big "soundstage" in a comparatively small (albeit floorstanding) package, find and listen to a pair of the original DCM Timewindows. DCM got the Bose "direct/reflected" thing right on the Timewindows.
Here's a photo of one of my own butt-ugly (but very cheap) Timewindows to show the drivers and the "ports" of the two transmission lines that load the woofers. Something about TL bass...

Hey Early,
Don't forget to add the Heritage line from Klipsch. Horns, most of the time will throw a huge sound that can get physical. But as you already know, when it comes to horns, it's a love/hate thing.
You can find used vintage models at great prices. Some people really like Altec too.
*edit* oops, I think I posted this on the wrong thread. I thought I clicked on your other one.
I prefer big speakers.
