I bought my wife the Cannon Power Shot A 520 last Christmas on a recommendation from my son who does video production for QVC as a living. It is by far (and he backs up this statement) an excellent performer. I don't believe there is anything you can't do with this camera. It cost under $200 last year.

Other vote for Canon, heard Canon makes there own lens with glass sweet. Also my Rebel uses a light on body that will cause people eyes to shut a little if it detects dark picture, that is sweet as I never had a picture that had red-eyes.

Big canon vote here. My dad, brother & I all use them- bro has the $3000 digital SLR rig & SD400?; dad uses the IS3 and SD500; I've got an IS3 and the wife has a digital elph (don't remember which).

Anyhow, two big things to remember:
1)You're buying for the wife, not you. she wants a small camera that fits in her purse and takes pictures when she presses the button on top.
2)More megapixels are usually cheaper than a better zoom. I used to have a 2mp elph w/ 3x zoom and the wife still has the 3mp with 2x zoom. You could get the exact same shot with either one, but hers was cheaper and smaller.

Anyhow, the wife would probably want to have a smaller camera with less features, but if you do get a mid sized one, I _highly_ recommend getting an image stabilization model. The difference in zoomed pics & night photography is HUGE.

7.1 MP, 3.8X Wide Angle Image-Stabilized Zoom Lens.

    Canon SD800

Don't think you can beat that for the money.

damn, they just keep getting cheaper! That one phantom posted has all the important features, a good price & is compact enough to make her happy.

BTW: the model # in my prio post should ahve been S3 IS not IS3...

I know... I bought my wife the S500 a couple years ago for $400. Still very happy with the camera but wish I could upgrade to the SD800, it sounds amazing.

That should most likely be of little concern. I have 2 Canon digitals. One with and one without image stabilization. The only time I find the image stabilization to be of any real value is if I'm shooting in really low light. Other than that I never see a difference.

If I were you I would probably jump on UNC's deal. That seems like a really good price.

I've always used Sony Cybershots and have been happy. I just bought a new one today to use at work (expensed of course!). I bought the DSC-W70 for $280 and a 1GB memory card for $50. It's a 7.2 MP that is really thin and has a huge LCD viewing screen. I'll have to report back in a while to see if it can survive in a construction environment.

Ok, so how does THIS camera compare to the one unc2701 mentioned? We got some dough back from taxes and are ready to spend it!

Nice Choice Early. I've been reviewing the S3 and the Panasonic (not sure of the model) FZ50? Excellent price on that S2!

Hmm, my Fuji Finepix E550 just broke...more accurately, I dropped it about 3.5 feet onto padded carpet and the lens barrel got bent out of alignment. The image quality and features were decent, but I'm definitely ready to move up to a pro-sumer digicam (I had experience with a number of film SLR's in HS, so learning should be no prob). About to pull the trigger on one of those Canon S3's, actually. Early, how's yours been treating you?

Ok. It's come down to this. She wants to order one today... and here are the two we've narrowed it down to:

    A630

    or

    A710 IS

Anybody have experience with either of these, or have a recommendation that would be on the same playing field within Canon options?

    Any suggestions, let me know.

    Thanks!

Get the one with the IS. Of all the features out there, that's the one that I find most consistently improves every single picture you take. Plus you get slightly better zoom.

The higher MP on the A630 just won't make that much of a difference.

I have the S3 IS, and after hours of research and asking around here, I just don't think there's a better camera for $400 or under.

Early, the S2 that you ordered is very nice, that's what I was looking for when i bought my S3. There are really only minor differences between the two...
