Cool thanks. Salt water chlorination can be added later, not a biggie.

The cascading I am refering to might be called a water feature. But to try and simply explain it:

Most of the time your wall return(s) are under the water line. When you cascade your return, you force the return flow to go through the air. This supposedly allow some of the heat in the water to be released into the air.

In the sun where you live, the water can be heated to the point it's like getting in the bath tub. But at night the tempatures go down considerably. If you leave the water to return to the main body of the pool, it is just circulating the warmed water. However if you cascade it at night, it will release alot of that latent heat and could possibly be ten to fifteen degrees (or more)cooler at the start of the day.

I do it with a little periscope lookin' how ya doin I made from parts I got at a pool store. I just thread it into one of the returns. But I didn't find out about it until after I had it done. You could do it so you turn a valve at night.

    It seems to work...

An aerator...it's just a valve that pumps the water so it can be "air-cooled". I think all the local pool companies install these standard, and you're right, it does make a difference. I have one on the opposite side of my water feature, and have let both run in the evenings over the past few weeks. It has cooled the water off about 6 degrees.

    Steve,

If you drop the in ground pool cleaner save of $, add an electronic pool control Intellitouch 5 pentair system. I have it works sweet electronic pool timers / pump control / salt control / solar control all in one. Nice controller installed in my master bed room with side buttons for lights / blower / jets by the spa.

BTW If you like I could put some pool construction pictures here if you like.

Steve,I don't know if a Pool Cover would work for you or not, but,it is a lifesaver around here.

As you can see we have landscaping and trees very close to the pool area, and NO CRAP in the pool.

Also, very safe,it takes a key to open it up/close...so nobody is going to get in while you are not home...also helps on your insurance costs...yes that will go up when install an in-the-ground pool.

Also helps alot on chemical usage,we you Baquacil,a none Chlorine sanitizer...works very well...but I also like the sounds of salt.

Forgot to mention, you put in a new inground and oh,the taxman,he comith with pen and paper, brace yourself:D

We go tonight to meet with Grant and get our quote, make decisions. Based on info here, research on the web, etc we're gonna do the following:

    - Eliminate the waterfall (this was a $3000 "pretty")
    - Have rock edging around 1/4 of the pool (goes with our landscape)
    - In-floor cleaning system...provided it comes with lifetime warranty (i think it does) I like the extra circulation this will provide.
    - Salt water setup...I can't find any reason NOT to do saltwater
    - I'm adding some elements you all have mentioned here as well
    - Decking will be cool-coat in Terra Cotta red (the patio will get tiled the same color next summer)

You need the waterfall, that is to help the cooling of the pool as well as look nice.

A 95 deg. pool is not real fun to swim in unless it is 65 deg outside.

we avoided the in floor part just because I heard it was not worth it but I do not know first hand.

We also are getting a kreepy krawler floor cleaner instead of the polaris cleaner with the wheels and bag. The wheels don't let the polaris go up the walls and it also has a bag that needs to be cleaned; the kreepy krawler is no maintenance and goes all the way up the walls.

I hope we can get an aerator later if it is not there allready.
I am going to look into the salt system later.

I'm concerned about the that Terra Cotta Red cool deck, the darker the deck is the hotter it will be. Just a heads up maybe something to consider where you live.

Signed the "papers" last night, we:
    - Kept the waterfall (his final design was really cool) and partial tilted beam rock edging
    - Got the in-floor cleaning system (lifetime warranty) he upped the filter capacity and pump HP to accomadate
    - Went with saltwater chlorination (A&A QuikChlor SWG)

His design is real nice, we made a few very minor changes to it. I'll scan and post a pic of the blueprint tonight...

They'll start in late December with completion in early spring. The water fall is fairly small, about 5' wide, 6' deep and 4' high, it'll have a border of rocks for about 4 ft in each direction, then go to standard decking. He's going to mate the waterfall against our 38" retaining wall so it looks like the water is originating from there---pretty cool. The retaining wall area is about 4' wide, 38" high, and spans the entire left side of the yard (71 feet) and has Lantana (purple/yellow desert flower) and Lavender, as well as some evergreen tall plants in the back.

again, make sure the pool steps are set up so as not to allow the kreepy to become stuck. and i don't get it, you say you're getting the in-floor cleaning system (pop-ups), correct? they don't work in conjunction with the kreepy. or are you planning to run either/or on any given day?

With the in-floor jets, I'll only have to run the Kreepy Krauly as needed (debris on floor) which will be rare (I'm told).

    The jets do 3 things:
    - minimize manual vacuuming (they pop-up 4 times an hour) they can also be de-activated while swimming
    - help with circulation/heat (if so equipped)
    - astetics; you don't have to have the "hose monster" hanging out of the pool all the time

i'm sure they work as intended. my mom's house growing up didn't have them. it looked alot cleaner, no pun intended. i mean they didn't break up the look of a uniform bottom. the cleaners in my house now have been de-commisioned, but even if still used, look unattractive. plus it's one more thing that you have to step on. your pool will only be around 13,000 or so gallons. a kreepy will clean better than you could wish for.

    just my $.02.

The hose monster is fun to swim around.
Ok not really; plus my neighbor let his pool get a little green and the hose became stained so there is that to look out for also.

As for mine, they installed part of the filter equipment yesterday and they are supposed to come and do the yard cleanup today.

There is something no one told me about right there, after they gunnited my pool and it was allowed to dry a couple of days, they began to use it for a garbage can. All the debris they came up with from that point on was just thrown into the pool. Right now my pool is full of boards and junk.
