Oh and i forgot to mention, I've heard of the SP3 + Ref1 combo going for $999 from av123. So if you are fortunate enough to grab that when it happens, you will be sitting pretty well as far as cost vs depreciation.
And still have a kickass setup IMO.Once again we meet at last. -

My advice......buy a Sony boombox. You'll be richer and happier in the long run. Just ask John K.Political Correctness'.........defined
"A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a t-u-r-d by the clean end."

Just a little over budget, but WELL worth it.
Outlaw RR2150 Stereo receiver - $599
SVS PB 10 NSD sub - $429 (or Rocket ULW10 for $399)
Cam Audio Azur 640C - $379
Energy Connoisseur C-3 mains - $189
Or, substitute the CA Azur 540R AVR currently on ebay for the Outlaw 2 channel receiver for $399 AND get a matching CA 540D DVDp from AA or SS for $279, then later on, add a matching Energy Connoisseur CC and surround speakers. Presto! A complete home theater as well with separate dedicated CA Azur CD AND DVD/DVDA players. -

Thanks Steve! I recently out together a system for someone in the family pretty close to that. CA Azur 540R and 540D, Energy C-3 and matching stands for mains, C-C1 center, C-R1 surrounds, and a Mirage S12 sub.
They have since added a second Mirage S12 sub and replaced the C-C1 with a C-C3 for that system, then picked up a pair of C-7 floorstanders to go with the C-C1 center they already had, more C-R1 surrounds, and a THIRD Mirage S12 sub for a second system.
I guess the fever runs in the family and kicks in hard once it hits. -
NAD 1020 pre - I think I paid $75
NAD 2700 amp (200 WPC)- $300
Toshiba 3950 - < $100
Pioneer tuner - $15
Cassette deck - free
SDA - CRS (modded) - $400
I put this together for my thirteen year old daughter, you should hear it.
Yammy natural sound pre (80's vintage)- Had it around
Technics single bit D/A CDP - free
B&K EX-440 amp (dual mono - 200 WPC) - see below
Thiel CS 2.1 - got with above amp for $500
AQ sidewinders
The 14 year old boy has this in his bedroom. Believe it or not, I have to tell him to turn it down. He get the windows rattling and ****...;)
My advice is to be patient and save up a few dollars. Then it's there when you need it. If you see something you like, go for it.
And watch this flea market. -

I'll jump in with a classic 2-ch combo (used).
Nakamichi CA-5 preamp $200
Adcom GFA-535 $175
AMC CD8b $250
Polk Monitor 7's $200
or Rta-8T's (floorstanding) $300
Home Depot speaker cable $ 20
Choice of Audioquest cables $100
RDO- replacement tweets $100
$1045-1145
This would be a killer starter system that would rival many things built today.
