Yes, and 70% of us don't have them.
"We're thinking of starting a Polk Audio page on MySpace. What do you think about this?"

Like I said, I wish they wouldn't ask our opinion as if it mattered. This was a done deal.

    Hi --
I'm Eliza McLaren. I started working in the marketing department here at Polk last week. I'm taking a quick poll to see how many of you have MySpace accounts. We're thinking of starting a Polk Audio page on MySpace. What do you think about this?
    Thanks!

Looks like she asked for an opinion to me.;) :)

Why do you think you matter? Just because they are asking for opinions and advice doesn't mean they have to take them. That's the beauty of opinions and advice. They are always freely given and there is no requirement to take them.

Polk Audio asked about MySpace, who had accounts and what you thought. They didn't say "Decide the future of my company for me...please?"

MySpace is fundamentally a marketing tool that Polk Audio wishes to exploit. They can do so with or without your opinion and influence. Yes, people matter because they have to sell speakers and you can screw them in your own way by not buying thier speakers. However, a forum full of close-minded individuals interested only in living in blissful ignorance, relishing the past and shunning the future is not going to accuratly reflect the buying market let alone society as a whole. If they made decisions based one what most people here think, they'd sink thier ship faster than Gilligan and the Skipper.

Don't get me wrong, the forum here is a good place to guage customer reaction and get ideas and influence. But, like Justin said, how come none of you thought about using MySpace as a tool to market? You're out of touch. Most of you probably have no clue what MySpace is and judging by many of the comments, barely any of you can see the real value added by such a community.

Bottom line, your opinion matters but it will never decide the fate of the corporation. The reasons why have already been laid out here in this thread. Beyond that, just because they asked for your opinion and it didn't jive with the route they took the company doesn't mean no one listened to you or that they are just trying to give you lip service and a warm, fuzzy feeling. Don't be so arrogant to think that you actually have any more bearing on the financial status of the company beyond forking over the cash to buy thier products.

It's not the best way to look at it but it's the god's honest truth. You're lucky that Polk Audio supports its customers. But, to be able to give all of thier old customers the support that they are accustomed to, they need to continue to attract new customers. To do that, they have to appeal to them and that requires reaching out and touching thier lives. Young people nowadays spend way more time on computers than even thier older siblings. They are connected and wired in ways that thier parents can only imagine. They don't watch TV anymore, they download it on the internet. They don't buy CD's anymore, they download them to thier iPod. They don't even go to movies anymore, they download those too or have them rented and mailed to them. Magazines? Forget it. They move way too fast in thier daily lives to take any time to sit down a read a magazine. Traditional advertising will not work on these young folk, it will not reach them. Polk Audio needs to do something different and they have.

If they listened to all the old, out-of-touch, one-track minded individuals, they'd end up like industry greats from the 60's and 70's who are nothing more than shells of thier former selves filled with cut rate Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese electronics just trying to capitalize on a name with some history.

That's business. There's no room for feelings. Feelings don't enhance the bottom line.

If you honestly want to help Polk Audio succeed, register your own MySpace account and add them as a friend. They will grow and the more people who add them as a friend, the more views they will end up getting. Since MySpace is free, even if they sell one speaker from somebody seeing the site, they will have profitted. So if you are all so concerned about the health of Polk Audio, go and help them spread the word instead of sitting here like a whiney **** complaining that no one listens to you.

Oh, you'll read it. Maybe not now but eventually you will. Then you'll get ticked off and you'll post something inflammatory to try and get my goat. It's easy to predict. So go ahead, continue to posture and crow about how you aren't as narrow-minded as you are and try, just try to ignore me. You can't, you won't and even if you use the stupid "ignore feature", you will still have to click on that link because you can't just let things be. You gotta get the last jab in. Most people here do. So, good luck with that whole "ignoreing" me thing.

No, Jstas -- you're 100% right. You're the business master. In fact I want to hire you to run my business for me since I'm clearly not fit to do it myself. How did this forum survive for so long without your opinions?

I'm waiting for the new the new TV series, CP - Special Victims Unit, starring you and Cliff.

    Folks,

I think you deserve an explanation of my reasoning. A poll that 30% of you are interested in myspace and 70% are not, does not mean the nay sayers 'won.' What it means is that 30% of our customer base (as gauged by this forum) is on myspace and would be interested in joining a Polk community there. Looked at that way, it is actually a really high percentage.

The MySpace page has already been successful in one respect: my inbox has been flooded with friend requests. One thing that separates Polk's marketing from other companies is that we're largely interested in making sure our customers are also our fans. We try to treat you well, ask your opinions on things, and make sure you think as highly of our products and team as we do. I see myspace as a way to bolster the kind community we strive for.

As for tracking, there are ways of telling where people come from, and we will be able to tell if the links on the MySpace page are being clicked. I'll report back to you on that.

Also, in response to those concerned about a MySpace page disparaging our reputation – your reasoning confuses me. If you don't like MySpace, I would assume you don't peruse through MySpace pages -- therefore, you simply won't see Polk's page. And what you don't know/don't see can’t hurt you, right? In turn, if you don’t see it, it certainly can’t hurt us.

On that note, I'd like to turn this thread into a more constructive conversation. We do value your opinions, and I have received emails with some pretty great ideas. The good news is: marketing endeavors are not mutually exclusive -- so saying, "instead of myspace, you should be on tv" doesn't make much sense. We can do both. If you have any "outside of the box" marketing ideas, please post them here. It’ll help me do my job.

    Yours truly,
    Eliza

If you want the Polk name to spread across the Internet. Make a funny video.

For example. My 'Mustang Cropdusting' video that I made, that has my Mustang club's web address at the beginning and end, was viewed 3500+ times from unique PC's in LESS THAN 24 HOURS!
