I was wondering what history books will write about us a hundred years after we really screw things up.

I was thinking 1910-1930.

I wouldn't exactly call that the golden age. aggressive industrialization with no regard to the enviroment or the wanton exploitation of the workers by that industry. The rape of the plains by the farmer. Rampant speculation leading to economic collapse.

Depends on which country's history books....

I'd say the years after WWII and the late 60s.....the victory in WWII over Germany and Japan, Marshall Plan, birth of rock 'n roll, us emerging as a superpower vs. the Soviet Union in the Cold War, the GI Bill, further industrialization, TV and more TV, space program, moon landing, etc....

Sure, there were also some not-so-golden moments as well. But taken as a whole, anything after that period kind of pales in comparison.

You have to overlook some people. We have it so good in this country that some people actually feel guilty about living here and feel the need to tarnish this countries history to make them feel better.

Luckily I know you're being sarcastic(if not, you're slipping), but the question was intended for the author of this thread.;)

Plus, if I understand the thread topic, he wants to know what history books will say about the USA under our watch, not 150 years ago or what the rest of the world did/does.

With all the illegals being made legal, we will all be tarnished by lower wages and we will become close to 3rd living standards. If the presidents plans go ahead, look for a spanish population in the USA close to 200 millon in the next 10 to 15 years.

Is it me or has it become fashionable to slam this grand experiment in self rule that we call USA? I would like to think that we set the example in the face of adversity and I believe that past American history has shown that time and time again. We arent perfect but we do a damned good job considering our diversity and when presented with some of the situations we've been thrown into!
Last I checked, I cant think of any other country in the world where there is a constant stream of folks trying to get in. Hundreds of thousands, no... millions of folks coming here (and not leaving) cant be wrong! Where is the big line of people leaving? I have yet to see it!

Like I said, there are a lot of people that feel guilty for being American. They dont think they deserve to live in this country and have benefited unfairly from being here so in order to make themselves feel better they must trash this country. This way they can look at the people in China and say, yeah you have no freedom and your dictator leaders could gun you down at any time but at least you dont live in a country where 2% of the population owned slaves over 400 years ago. And just get down on your knees and thank Buddha that you dont live in a country that lets people own guns or drive SUV's!

Maybe they don't deserve to live here. If they are embarassed to be a part of the greatest country on earth - I welcome their departure.

I hope they send us an e-mail in a few years and let us know how its going for them. (provided there is power and an internet connection whereever they end up)

I hope they enjoy their lives more where ever they end up. I am surely enjoying mine.

Almost every nation, at one time or another, practiced some sort of slavery, whether in the Motherland or their colonies.

The amount we are going into debt and emerging economies of the world all point to an opportunity for us to fall off our throne.

    puts head back in hole

First off, our debt is insignifigant when compared to our GNP. Think of it like this, if you made $20,000 a year then $10,000 of debt would be a big deal. Now if you made $200,000 a year it wouldnt.

And there is absolutely no comparison between us and the USSR. They were communists. They had no freedom or free enterprise. Its suprising they lasted as long as they did. A better comparison would be us and England. Theyve been around for several centuries and are still going strong. They are a free enterprise, capitalistic country like us albeit they have a lot of strong socialist tendencies and super high taxes.

We've been growing and getting stronger every year and will continue to do so unless we elect a bunch of socialists into office.
