It is a photographic process that produces images thanks to the differences between 2 laser beams. These images are projected into a gym using a special camera.
There is not a drop of water in this room, …let alone a whale ...

^^ that holographic display is fake. It's on Youtube and Snopes and everyone says it's fake. The audience's reaction (repeatedly looking in other direction) shows this hint.

What I mean is that it's not real display. It's simple video editing/overlay. The audience is not witnessing some display of a whale producing by some special camera. The whale is added later to a video of the audience in a gymnasium.
