I was drawin' a blank.
Its the zu audio 103r audiophile review = . The Zu doesn't just slay giants: It rips their beating heart from their chests, shows it to them, finishes them off, then chases their souls and drags them down to hell. Recommended. -
actually we're both wrong :-P although yours is just a typo, I'm guessing -- the small one is a sharp-shinned hawk! I was running from one thing to another and... I have no idea why I typed "sharp tailed"... d'oh.
The birders call 'em 'Sharpies". The males are quite small for a raptor; roughly grackle-sized, or even a bit smaller.
Here's a sharpie from our old backyard in MA years ago (2004, according to the file name)...
(photo taken with a point 'n' shoot digital through the eyepiece of a spotting scope)
EDIT: FWIW, I think yours is a Coopers'.
I can check with Mrs. H if'n you like.
;-)

Yup - didn't have my reading glasses on - sharp-shinned.
Yes please - I've gotten different opinions when I show pics of the hawk.
So if you have an expert handy to give a definitive ruling - I will go with that!

Mrs H's take on the hawk photos from the previous page. I downloaded the two photos, e-mailed 'em to my wife (sitting 10 feet from me in the living room) and she e-mailed me this response (see below). Egads, I love technology! ;- )I would say Cooper's also. Not sure of the spacing between the "supports" of the railing, but if 4 inches then bird is at least 12" long. Cap looks dark compared to back, eye large and legs look "sturdy" - thick. All points to Cooper's. Second picture make it look like tail could be rounded, also a Cooper's trademark. -

There is indeed a Northern Hawk Owl :-P
This photo makes it look more owl-y than hawk-y; but from the rear it looks quite hawk-y indeed.

This photo was from a wintertime birding trip my wife was on in Minnesota earlier this year. Minus 40 degrees F one morning while they were there... not my idea of fun :-P

The goshawks lived in the conservation land behind our old house in MA; they kept the mourning dove population at our feeders in check! I wish we had them on the property here in NH.
Sorry I don't have better photos :- (
EDIT: At this house, we get - mostly - birdies.

Our family of Coopers Hawks live here:
Second year in a row they've nested in our yard. -
Our gardens are in FULL bloom. Loving our yard this weekend!

Nice home, beautiful yard and setting.
Is that mosquito netting? Here in New Hampshire we have a mosquito problem as well. Tough to enjoy our deck most of the time from mi-May to mid September, or so.

bugs ain't (generally) bad where we are in NH - believe it or not. That said, last week the black flies were absolutely horrific.

Erik - Thank you! It's a lot of work, but when we find time to enjoy it, it really pays off!
Moose - Thank you for the compliments. Yes, it is mosquito netting. Got it on amazon and it fits perfectly since the swing is a Full Size.
