Growing up, we always had like 3+ acres, and my dad tried the cheapo ones first, but they would always break. After several different brands, he switched to a John Deere. Last time I checked, it was still going strong after 10+ years. Big bucks, but quality that lasts.

Just get one of these and be done with it:http://www.dixiechopper.com/HP.php

Admittedly, it may overkill for "some" lawns, but then again......

My dad runs a lawn service in the summers(teacher as well), so he has invested in two of these over the last 10 years.

The dixie choppers will last you the rest of your life...

We have a John Deere LX176 garden tractor, that we used to mow about 3 acres with, weekly. It's now over 10 years old and has never had anything but preventative maintenance done to it. Still has the original tires, even, but they have been outfitted with tubes after punctures (normally tubeless tires).

I think it uses a Kawasaki engine? Not positive....

Damn right Tecumseh are POS's. The Australian industrial Grasshopper mower use OHV BS twins with excellent results.

    Get a Stihl weedeater, btw.

ETA: Grasshopper walk all over DixieChoppers

At the time we bought our first one, almost 10 years ago, the Dixie was better for our needs. We needed a belly mower more than front deck. Well, when we needed a second big mower a couple of years ago, it just made more sense to get another Dixie, since we were already familiar with them.

Also, there was a Dixie dealer closer, my parents live in the middle of nowhere, and more knowledgable about his product than the Grasshopper dealers.

We have had problems with the mowers, but half of it was our fault, and the other half is that the machines are used for several hundred hours each summer on rough terain and hot, dry weather(not as bad as Arizona, but close).

Anyway, I they are still incredible machines and I wouldn't hesitate owning one if they need ever arose.

I have a John Deere self propelled rear bagger (approximately 2003) and the thing has had to be rebuilt twice now - drive train problems - otherwise starts on the first try and is really a great mower... maybe I'm hard on it.

I would go with a Honda.

Toro all the way! The Toro "Personal Pace" self propelled is wonderful! Hardly any pushing to do. I've had Lawnboy, Craftsman, Montgomery Ward and the Toro has been the best. I hear that Honda is very good, more expensive though

BTW Toro owns Lawnboy, but Lawnboy has not been very good the last ten years. Their Silver and Gold Series have had dependability issues/

I've never had a single issue with Tecumseh engines and they work better in mulching mowers than any B&S engines I've ever used. I'm not certain, but maybe they rev higher or have more torque, because it couldn't be hp, because I've had B&S 6.75s and Tecumseh 6.75s. I'm talking about 4 cycles, too. Lawn Boy still uses Tecumseh 2 strokes in a lot of their mowers. My Toro has a Tecumseh.

We really liked the front deck for the precision it offered over the speed of a belly. In GA my family has a mobile home park that we have to cut in. With all the trailers, meter pedestals, trees, etc. it made a lot more sense, plus it rides better than a 'chopper.

I own a Toro and it was like 500.00. I had it for over 2 years now and it runs perfectly. one pull and off she goes.

Sears Mowers are good 2. My dad had one and never had any problems with it. He spent around 5 or 600 on it. I forget but it's good.

They all suck. Especially when you have to use them. I got a Craftsman, big rear wheels, 6.5HP B&S motor, rear bagger. Does everything well, cheap parts from Sears, straight forward design. I like it. My previous one was a Craftsman 15 year old, and that is when I got it. 15 years later I finally junked it because I found my new one on sale for half price.

I think I'm going to get the Toro Personal Pace from Home Depot. Its currently $399. I've got a 10% coupon and I'm just waiting for a sale on it hopefully.

Guess I should start picking up the Sunday paper.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.
