Mirage versus SVS

SVS hands down!!!!
Time to close this thread. There are only a handful like 2 per 100 that are diappointed in SVS--mainly because they are 20 to 30 somthings switching from car to home audio and have to get adjusted to home theater as opposed to 6 speakers in a 25 ft squared listening area.
SVS all the way--Case closed -
It's not closed until the fat box sings. I need to wait until the little fellow is not sleeping. And if you are tired of the thread, don't open it.Michael

Mike,
It really might not be your cup of tea out of the box. Especially if you are used to "normal" subs. It will be much flatter and more powerful which, oddly enough, means it won't have the "punch" of conventional subs since that "punch" is not recorded on the disks but a by product of poor design. Your new sub will play exactly what it is supposed to and nothing that its not. There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -
Thanks jdhdiggs. I did have a brief moment to listen to it last night (15 whole minutes) and played a few scenes from Nemo, Top Gun and Saving Private Ryan. I guess I was waiting to hear that "Snap or Thud" that you commonly hear in subs. I will do more listening this evening. I think I will reserve comments until I have assured myself that all connections, calibration and tweaking are complete and that everything else is 100% functional.Michael

I emailed SVS and with a tweak here and a tweak there, the SVS PB12-PLUS is an amazing sub. All I can say is I have never heard pronounced bass like that before.
The room is 18.5' X 14.5'. The sub is positioned in the front right corner about 2.5' feet from the back wall.
I started the session with TOP GUN, not a high favorite on my list, but good sound effects. The gain on the SVS was at approx. 11:00 o'clock and the volume at -15db. I actually thought things may begin to break up. The movement of air is unbelievable. The sound of the jet leaving the carrier was all around me. Not just in the front, but it almost seemed to be above my head. The sound is so real that I only had one thought. It is a darn good job I asked enough questions on this forum. I could actually feel the air movement. The Mirage on the other hand seemed to be an “echoee” sound.
The bass in this sub, as described before, is very natural. It sounds so real. The other amazing thing is the seamless integration. By that I mean it blends in very well and the origin is difficult to determine. My REL sub is like that as well. When I auditioned the Mirage, I new where the base was. It did go pop and bang and snap and I guess I believed that was normal for a sub. I know the REL does not do that which makes it great for music. The SVS has that amazing characteristic as well.
As my movie collection is somewhat limited, NEMO was next. Hey, it’s agood movie. Again, the barracuda scene was amazing. There was no unnatural sound. Just nice smooth, well defined properly positioned bass. This is one powerful sub and here is the most amazing thing. A colleague and I went to pick it up at the airport during lunch yesterday. After work I set things up quickly and had my 15 minute preview. It was not until 10:00pm that evening when my wife sat down to watch a little TV. So, “What do you think of the new sub?” She said that she hardly noticed it in the corner. This thing is huge, yet is seems to disappear in the corner. The sleeping giant!
I will test a little music later on, but for HT I am very glad I paid the additional $$ for the SVS. In my opinion, there is no comparison between the SVS and the Mirage. The SVS costs a little more, but for me worth every penny. Thanks to everyone and especially SID for helping me reach this decision. You guys are great!
On a side note, the new amp (Proceed AMP5) arrives tomorrow, so it will be fun to compare it to the Rotel, especially when the LSI9’s arrive in 2 weeks. Isn’t upgrading fun! Have a great evening folks.Michael

Awesome.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

Try Master and Commander, The Haunting DTS and WotW. These movies really accentuate the difference in subs where bass content is there on the disk, but not all subs can handle it. Definite WOW factor. For music the SVS plays what's there, no more no less. It sounds great, just like it's supposed to.
