The Most Incredible Sound Rig You Ever.....

or, "How The Boys from Vermont Got Burned for Carver Amazings In South Amboy, New Jersey"

Before you finish reading this, you will have heard about the most ambitious sound rig undertaking ever in the history of Polk Audio Forum, and maybe all mankind (including the Aztec AND Mayan audio pioneers).

I contracted to buy something from a guy in Vermont. No deal if I can't see it working in my house. No shipping. Hand deliveries only. No side of the road deals. It's a pricey item, and I don't know the guy from squat OR here.

"Not a problem, we're coming down to South Amboy to pick up a couple MORE sets of Carver Amazing Platinum Mk. IV's. Saturday night anyway. We'll swing by Superbowl Sunday morning"

I'm sure most of you saw the key word in the above paragraph. MORE.
This individual seems far too determined for me to want to try and deter him. OF COURSE he should "swing by" the 70 miles further south into the wilds of Jersey before he goes home on Superbowl Sunday, and hand deliver the mint item. He shows up as advertised on Sunday morning, 11ish. Terry and Don. Two of the nicest guys you'd want to meet. After exchanging pleasantries on my front lawn (I could see the lawn envy in their eyes), they told me how the guy in South Amboy answered the front door in his boxer shorts, and the house was a shithole. In and out. The Amazings had been misrepresented in the ad and were literally beat to ****. One deep gouge in the black lacquer that the guy magic markered, and it appreared someone tried to carry them using the handles on the crossover cover. Ripped the whole assembly right out and it was just hanging there. Those were just the MAJOR issues. They elected not to take them. I'm surprised they didn't turn around and go home right then and there.

Now we're inside at the kitchen table still doing the pleasantries thing when one looks at the other, the other looks at me and says...
"Just what's it going to take to get you to part with one pair of your Amazings?"

I felt really bad for these guys now. These men obviously thought they could "salvage" the trip to Jersey, obviously operating under the mistaken impression that I had TWO pair of Amazings. I think the look on my face explained it to them, but I did it orally anyway, and told them I only HAD one pair of them. Perfect stereo jaw drops as they turn to look at each other. Not my fault, I got a clean conscience you know? When they regained composure, you have to know the next question they asked, and that the look on my face was all they needed for that one. No orals this time baby, you are going home with zero Jersey Amazings.

Terry is a master electro-acoustician. The room is like 35' x 34', 10 foot ceilings. The plan is Pioneer Elite 7.1 with 7 pair of Carver Amazing Platinum Mk. IV's in that room. Seven pair. Couple of M & K 5,000 watt subwoofers or something like that too. Maybe not that much, but a lot.

One pair of Amazings flanks the monitor, and they are the center channel speaker. Then, in every other position, is a PAIR of Amazings. A LF pair, and a RF pair. A Lside pair and a Rside pair. A Lsurround pair, and a Rsurround pair. Each pair to be driven by a pair of Silver 7T's. Although they said they think each pair sounds better only being driven by one 7T. He already has 10 of the amps. You heard it here first. No question in my mind they were going to do this. Matter of time and speaker availability.

These boys were mad as hatters, but I was sitting across the table from greatness.

Gave them a handsome lunch, and sent them back to Vermont.

You gotta admire their ambitions, but I think I could find better uses for Amazings than using them as pairs in an ambiance role.

A sight to behold, I'm sure - but agreed, a big waste of fine speakers.

Talk about a blast chamber, if that doesn't force you to move your bowels, nothing will. Insane.

I'll call it a waste of fine speakers after I hear it. Significance is in the ear of the beholder. When you gonna learn? You get that jaded that fast? Please don't tell me some flea powered little amp and a pair of big horns has just got to sound better than this, without ever hearing it.

My good old friend, is losing his flair for the outlandish and outrageous. I strongly recommend some time with a couple gross of bottlerockets, and some time with four AR-3a or AR-5 loudspeakers, an AR Integrated or AR Receiver, cd player of your choice, turntable of your choice, and a Dynaco Quadaptor. Get a healthy helping of Ground Zero fun and great sound. Then go back to what you're doing.

I hope Im not the only one that thinks this will sound horrible...

5 or 7, however many DIPOLAR speakers all in one room...

That is one out of phase signal for every in phase signal. I cant even begin to imagine the amount of pain on the nerves it is going to take to set those things all up effectively...

I will get flamed for that, but I dont care - my brain would go into overload trying to correct all the peaks and dips in that room.

    Two dipolar speakers...sure...

But 5 or 7?...Ill pass. Sure itll look cool...

A Master electro-acoustician with the $$$ would do a custom built install to fit his room, not a retro-psuedo-Pioneer-Carver-surround rigged setup that you decribe.

I think someone is jerking our nads.............something smells like toasted almonds. ;)

Horns, not likely, ever. Flea amps, sure - I can hit 104+db at 15 feet with 12 watts, so what? Single ended class A too. Do I? No, I value the hobby, so I nurse my only two receptors, hoping to get as much mileage as possible out of them.

7 I could see, 7 PAIR, you gotta admit, even with the size of the room that's a lot of Amazings. FIFTY SIX twelve inch woofers in one room? Come on George. If Sid posted that, you'd be on him like stink on Troy.

That being said, I'd still like to sit right in the middle, and get my ears on it, at least once.

    Cheers,
    Russ

funny thing is, I bought those beat up amazings. yes, the house was a horror show (inside and out). yes, the panels were dinged, I see no big gouge though, he might have fixed it better by the time I saw them. yes, some jackass tried to pick it up by the little handles on the crossover. that was a fun look, but actualy, only a piece o fthe wood was broke, so it was floppy, but not hanging. simple glue repair, I just havent done it. they got new drivers now too. the panels may be a little dinged, but they sound just fine. of course, thats why it was only 900 clams

Sid's got a pair of Amazings so now he's an expert......

So, Sir Sid.....if it's such BAD idea to have multiple di-poles in the room, why is the Magnepan HT setup so wildly popular??

George, if Stephie went within a city block of that lad, I'd slug you.

****, if I could get 7 pairs of Amazings in a room?? I'd do it, for NO other reason just to say I did.
