Look im not saying alpine makes the best headunit. far as features and sound quality i would take the kenwood over any headunit on the market right now. Now far as i am concerned pioneer headunits are not all that. I mean they get way to hot for one i know i owned one. I get tired of people saying eclipse's headunits are all that. Yeah maybe they are advanced but they look like ****. What i consider a outstanding company is one that all there products meet or exceed consumers expectations. Pioneer there headunits are the best thing they make there amps and speakers are nothing to brag about thats for sure. I will put alpine upside any company in the industry far as having a product line thats solid all the way through in all areas. No one can really match that.

Arc Audio, Zapco, and many others do as well. You need to search and read a whole lot more :).

They dont anymore but their older models, even last years, looked like crap. Their displays looked like Walmart specials. Its the main reason I wouldnt want one.

No appearance doesnt affect SQ or performance but it is nice to have. You dont want to be staring at some fugly head unit for the next couple years do ya?

id rather be staring at some bad **** ugly head unit for the next couple years than be staring at a hole with a bunch of wires hanging out in the middle of a ripper apart dash that had my pretty chrome radio in there that just got stolen...

I think my Eclipse CD8454 from last year looks ok. I like the way it looks more than this year's units.

I too would go SQ over looks Cody. We do not look at music, but do listen to it.

No but you look at your head unit.

If you like having a plain looking fugly head unit thats fine. Id rather have something that looks cool.

I believe that none of my HU's have been fugly. Including my Eclipse CD8454. I just think that the sound a HU puts out is worth more than its looks.

I never said I liked having a plain looking fugly HU :).

Well too bad the whole strip thing does not work all that great, they should have left the buttons on there. I do prefer the look of the Alpines, I alway have. They should bring back the really old chicklet style stuff :).

That Eclipse HU looks HORRIBLE. Totally reminds me of the crappy shelf stereo's I used to sell at CC.

That Alpine looks pretty nice, I haven't had one since they had the 6 green buttons and you had to carry them around like a lunch box.

I don't like the looks of that Eclipse unit AT ALL. However, I do really like the way last year's stuff looked.

I think one of the buttons on my HU has stopped working. You know the big knob on the left that controls source/volume? Today was the second time I could turn it and it wouldn't change the volume. I could push it to change source, and then it'd work for the volume, too. I wonder if it's going bad. :(

Kenwood had the best idea yet IMO with the MASK and D-MASK faceplates. They got kinda flashy for a little while but are pretty toned down now. They are great for security because even if a thief knows that the MASK units exist, it is almost impossible to tell if that is really a MASK unit or a radio delete panel. Especially if all of your gear is out of sight.

Eclipse though, they are like Blaupunkt. Blaupunkt is Bosch and is full of top quality electronics. However, thier asthetics suck and feel not only cheap but flimsy and fragile. I've used some very nice Blaupunkt head units over the years and they sound incredible and perform well. But, stack the top of the line Blaupunkt unit next to Jensen or Pyramid head units and they look like they would be direct competition. Even if the Blaupunkt head unit was a $700 beast and the Jensen and Pyramid were the $99 specials that JC Whitney runs.

anyone whos ever seen a d-mask can tell its one. id much rather have a detachable face. which eclipse offers neither, but a 1 year theft protection warranty and the thought that whoever stole it wont be able to use it. and ive never thought eclipse units felt cheap...from the old ones made in the late 90s to the new ones...

I have a D-MASK unit in my truck right now and when it is sitting at car shows and the stereo is off, people look in the window and ask me if I took the "radio delete option". It has happened on more than one occassion at more than one show.
