My HU!!!!

Man!! I'm sooo glad I spent the extra money when I bought my HU and got something 'nice'. I just looked through the manual at the built-in crossover. Not only do you have the HPF for the tweeters, LPF and HPF for the mids, and the LPF for the sub, you also have adjustable slopes for each!!
Here's the specs:
Tweeter HPF settings (in kHz): 1.6 - 2 - 2.5 - 3.15 - 4 - 5 - 6.3 - 8 - 10 - 12.5 - 16. Slopes (in db/octave): -24, -18, -12, -6.
Mid LPF (in kHz): 1.6 - 2 - 2.5 - 3.15 - 4 - 5 - 6.3 - 8 - 10 - 12.5 - 16. Slopes (in db/octave): -24, -18, -12, -6, pass (0).
Mid HPF (in Hz): 31.5 - 40 - 50 - 63 - 80 - 100 - 125 - 160 - 200. Slopes (in db/octave): -24, -18, -12, -6, pass (0).
Low LPF (in Hz): 31.5 - 40 - 50 - 63 - 80 - 100 - 125 - 160 - 200. Slopes (in db/octave): -36, -30, -24, -18, -12.
I don't know how this compares to other HUs, but in my mind....that's some awesome flexibility in an HU!!!. I'm happy!

Cool, I've always had good luck with Pioneer HU's.

I still like Alpines the best even though pioneer does make a damn good head unit. Alpine is the leader in mobile electronics. They are always the first to invent better technology for mobile headunits.

I don't like Alpine solely because of their DACs. Well, I also don't like their new 'touch & slide' button or w/e you call it.George Grand wrote: »

I am wondering the same thing as Cody. Where do you get your info from? Had you said this a few years back I would have agreed.
The Alpine HU and processor combo that I had will totally blow away anything Alpine has right now, except for the F#1 status gear. The sad thing is that this combo is about 7 years old. I believe that gear that old from the same company that totally spanks the new stuff in SQ says a whole lot about where the company is at the moment. I still believe Alpine is a solid company with good HU's. I think you get a very good value with their lower models. It is just when you start going higher in the line that your money will go further with other brands, meaning you will get more bang for your buck. Examples would be better DAC's and better preamp sections with higher voltage and lower preamp impedance.
My HU is the non Premier model of the DEH-P860MP. It has all of the same functions minus the 3way crossover setu and 2.5V's less in the preamp section. It also has the Burr Brown DAC's  . I am extremely happy with it . My previous HU was an Eclipse CD8454, this should say alot about this HU.Alpine: CDA-7949

There's more to a headunit than dac's and preamp output voltage. I mean yeah look alpine runs the 1 bit dac's on there headunits thats because they saved the 24 bit dacs for they top of the line headunit the f1 model. I mean look theres a lot more ways to improve sound quality than just dac's think about it one way to improve sound quality is to be able to turn the internal amp off in the radio like alpine has pioneer does not even offer that feature. Alpine is number 1 in mobile electronics and will be for a longtime to come. they were the first to market the ipod adapter for cars. They were the first to market a true digital amp that could be controlled from the headunit. They were the first to offer a headunit with xm radio built into the unit i mean the list goes on and on.

Just because you're the first to do or make something, doesn't mean your the best at it. Being the first to make an Ipod adapter also says nothing about the SQ being discused. If anything, that makes it worse, because its compressed music.1993 Ford Ranger super cab:

Pioneer makes not-so-good amps and speakers but when it comes down to HUs they're the first option on my list, no doubts about it...<|>

Pioneer had lots of firsts, here's a small taste:

1990 - Pioneer releases world's first car navigation system
1997 - Pioneer releases worlds first car stereo product equipped with OEL display -
how does turning off the internal amp have anything to do with sq?? if you have your speakers amped, dont connect the speaker wire, voila, no internal amp...in theory

I guess when you turn off the internal amp it puts more voltage to the preouts which would mean a cleaner signal, I guess. I notice no SQ difference with my amp on or off although I keep it off just to save the power.
I dont think Alpine is the best out there but I do think theyre pretty damn important to the industry. They have done more to further car audio then pretty much any other brand. They make ONLY car audio and dont delve into home audio, cameras, washing machines or whatever. They make exceptional gear, even their entry level offerings are high quality.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Seems logical. The h/u can only take in a certain amount of voltage and if its not have to give any up for the internal amp that leaves more for the preouts....right?polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

voltage doesnt split. Think of wiring two 12V batteries in parallel, does the V go to 6V?
-Cody -
Using power for an internal amplifier AND a 4 volt x3 pre-out signal would use more power than if the internal amp were off thus leaving more juice for the pre-outs.

Nope, I'd say that has nothing to do with it. It's simply because the less electronics you have on in that HU, the fewer signals you have floating around in there, and so the less distortion/interference you have, thus lending to better sound quality.
Sounds pretty far-fetched to me that something that petty would actually have an effect on the sound, but stuff like that is really common in HA.George Grand wrote: »

Actually that could be part of it. An internal amplifier could cause some noise which could get into the passive signal.
