The live "Ballad of Billy the Kid" and "Captain Jack" from "Songs..." are magnificent.

BTW, IIRC the live version of "Shes Got a Way" on the aforementioned "Greatest Hits" is the one from "Songs..." which (as I recall) was a hit when that album was new. That's getting to be a while ago.

Let it die? We haven't even really scratched the surface of the corollary Springsteen topic, yet.

Not to mention the fact that Dylan's only been mentioned once (IIRC)...

Actually "allmusic's" take is quite interesting: Sez "allmusic": Billy Joel(TM) really wasn't happy with his LA persona, and he really only blossomed when he went back to New York and teamed up with Phil Ramone. "Say Goodbye to Hollywood", indeed...

By the way, from what I remember Billy Joel plays Steinway's exclusively...that makes him OK in my book...

Bob Seger is total crap! The first 20,000 times I heard every freakin one of his songs played to death on the radio they were ok. After that I never want to see another chevy commercial ever again. Not that I have anything against chevy, I own one, but if I have to hear "Like a rock" one more freakin time, I will scream!!!!!!!!! And it won't be just any scream.....Mark my words......Mark them I say......

I'm only going to say this once and it REALLY pains me to do so :( becase it's the 2nd time in two months which is more times than the last 3 years...... Micah is right about "Songs in the Attic". I picked it up last night for $3 at the used CD store. I'm not going to say everything else is crap (especially his early work)....but this may very well be Joel's finest disc.

Bob Seger..oh boy! I listened to that fiddle down in Georgia stuff and when they came out with "like rock" and it was all ok.

But now the younger crowd like what is on radio disney is just better and more with the times.......maybe for the young crowd but still OK and much better.

Well, I was sort of kidding. But since sda2mike mentioned "Live Bullet," and since shack needs more guidance from me (and seems to be coming around to The Dark Side), I should say that when I was a tot I had both "Live Bullet" and the follow up live LP, "Nine Tonight," on, I think, CASSETTE, and I loved them both. They are hard rocking, Ted Nugent-y, Mitch Ryder-esque American music. I would bet that Bob Seger, in those days, was one hell of a show. The band was big and blowsy, loud and tight, and the live set was non-stop energy. That's what I remember about them on those LPs, anyway.

Now, I have not listened to either of these recordings since that time. And I would never in a million years bother with a Bob Seger studio LP, even one of the old ones. And my reaction to rockers, whomever, selling their songs to commercials is first one of disgust and then one of ignore-ignore-ignore. If I ignore this trend, it will go away.

I wonder what these live Seger albums would sound like to me today. (Plus, is it me or do I recall that neither live LP was ever released in its complete form on CD; they were always missing some songs cut for time or something? Sort of like Kansas's amazing live album, "Two For The Show," which has never been on CD in its complete form. Otherwise, I'd own it.)

I think you should let loose and just do it. Go ahead. GO AHEAD and be free and just say it. Everything else is CRAP. I am telling you. SAY IT!

    You are a derailer, aren't you! :D

I've got "Nine Tonight" on CD and I'm pretty sure it's the same as the version I've got (somewhere) on cassette. I could be wrong about that, but I think it's the same. I enjoy listening to it through once, but then I have to put it up for a while until I forget about it. Not something I can listen to regularly.

so... what is "The Law of Averages", anyway? Has the Supreme Court ever ruled on it?

Is it like the concept of "regression" of a trait (e.g., height) in a population, from whence came the concept of '[linear] regression analysis'?

The formal mathematical result that supports the law of averages is called the law of large numbers. It states that a large sample of a particular probabilistic event will tend to reflect the underlying probabilities.

The phrase "law of large numbers" is also sometimes used to refer to the principle that the probability of any possible event (even an unlikely one) occurring at least once in a series increases with the number of events in the series.

ie: In a statictical context, Micah "should" be right from time to time.
