I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-49TX and it has started making a loud popping sound in the front and surround speakers when in THX Cinema mode. Sometimes a pop pop crackle pop and sometimes just a pop. I change to direct mode, and it is fine. This never occurs in direct or in Ultra2 mode. Any clues? Any information that you could ask me to provide prior to me taking this in for repair would be helpful. I am just afraid that I am going to take this in and they won't be able to reproduce the problem or something like that.

It does not appear that it matters what input I am on on the receiver.

Popping noise could be noise in the signal, what is source or is this coming from all sources?

I could be as simple as a bad or dirty digital connection Coax / Optical.

Does not seem to be Source dependant. Thanks, Scott

Believe it or not I'm thinking it's dust, if you dare you could try cleaning with can air the reciever or it's service time.

I'm thinking the milk shorted something out. How can you eat snap, crackle and pop w/o milk? :D

Theres a thing called a soft muting circiut. Dss digital is known for making popping noises when changing channels. Mitsubishi was notorious for this in ther HDTV dss receivers.
The vsx49tx I never heard this popping sound. Excellent receiver by the way. If it is all sources then your soft muting circuit may be faulty. I would call Pioneer Elite service and get it checked out.

Also check all your cables condition.
