Went from $2.57 at 9am this morning to $3.19 an hour later.  $.62 in one hour, ****!!!!

I'm sure that after the holiday weekend the price will go back down in the $2.60s or so.

I see several states have hotlines for price gouging, isn't it amazing how the oil companies have woolied folks into expecting to pay more because of a so called shortage even though the reserves are being opened. So I guess this not gouging. ****. Oil company's own many of the wells and set the price. Lets blame the Saudi's, their easy targets. I would not want those poor CEO's etc. at Exonn/Mobil, Shell, BP etc to miss a meal. We owe it to our Stockholders.

Exactly, the head of OPEC just came out a couple of days ago and stated that there was no shortage that they knew of and they would be looking at lowering their prices at their mid-September meeting. The only problem right now is our ability to refine the crude as 8-10% of our refineries are out of commission .

I would of thought folks have cut back at least 10% on fuel consumption, I know I have well exceeded that.

I think the problem is more the refineries shutting down than the oil not coming in. Opening the oil reserves is great, but you have to change it into gas some how.

Keep in mind there have been no new refineries that have come online in the last 25-30 years so the ones we had were running close to capacity. There are at least 3 that have been shut down (maybe more).

I think that (and the holiday) are more to blame for the price increase than the price or availability of the oil.

BTW - went from $2.69 yesterday to $3.19 today. (there are a few local stations still at $2.79 but I don't expect that to stay the case...)

    Michael

Edit - forgot to mention, industry analists are expecting it to go over $4.00/gal before it starts to drop again from things opening back up or coming back on-line. Link to the wonderful news here....

Yeah the gas they have in the storage tanks at the stations is affected, huh?

    Was wondering the same thing....

They did not pay the "current market" price for the inventory they already have in their tanks today.....I could see stations raising it after getting a new delivery but how does the inventory already paid for get raised?

I'm assuming that the gas is paid for when it's delivered

It is 4.99 /gal in Atlanta area right now. The main pipeline to Georgia is down. Lines at the stations around Augusta are about a 1/2 mile long. Had one radio host report one of the Ford dealers was running the BIG SUV's thru the stations filling them to the brim. PIGS. (I filled up Sunday nite :D )

So there are not enough refineries right now, today, this means the price goes up 25% or more, oh, yea, I guess it cost 25% more today to refine the gas than it did yesterday.

There is a tool that could be used, a safeguard against capitalism when it runs amuck because of disruptions or emergency's, its called regulation. Its not the best thing in the world, but a freeze may be whats needed.

    RT1

Its really not the price so much thats bothering me, its the manipulation to keep it going. Also, the fact my other hobby and passion is now out of my reach, the boat is just sitting collecting dust.

Its $3 here in my neck of the woods. This blows me away. Clear price gouging pure and simple. New Orleans has 5% of our refineries so what the hell happened to the other 95%??? And as mentioned above, these prices started to climb yesterday when they were still running on their previous shipment.

A guy that owns a transportaion company in Alabama I believe called in to a talk show yesterday and said there is no reason for prices to go up. All the tanks and lines are full. There is no shortage and we've got plenty of it. I understand it going up a smidge due to transportation hassles coming out of LA but this jump is ridiculous!!

Im going to go out on a limb and say itll never go over $4 a gallon. I dont believe there is a need for it to so its an artificial inflation so once it gets high enough the uprising of people will spur lawmakers to crack down. Maybe thats just me being an optimist but I hope Im right.

I filled up two days ago, before all this, so I'm good for about another week. It's 2.89 the cheapest I've found for regular here. Other stations are 2.99 and 3.05 for the cheap stuff... That's nuts.

The oil companys are using the storm as an excuse. 2.59 in the morning and 3.19 at lunch time. Price gouging! I wonder if they will beat last quarters record profits, this quarter?

Yes they did, or will, ala the 70's gas shortage of the past. I would post a link discussing it at a partcular political forum, but I'll restrain.

Pontiac Vibe for a smaller car? Try going with something like a Corolla, Camry, Accord or Civic... something a bit smaller. I wish I had enough money to purchase a second vehicle, even a $1000 beater.
