New Polk Speaker : The SurroundBar*

That's great! The plasma owners will eat it up.

First of all, this is a business. What is the goal? TO MAKE MONEY...
Garnering market share is how to make money. You don't like it? OK, don't. Other people will, and they will buy it.
I like it myself. It simplifies things. This may sound blasphemous, but I don't want a full blown surround set in every room. Not to mention the pain in the **** it would be to do it right. This would be great in a bedroom TV thing, or for video game setup.
I think we talked about this at Troy's. With all the whining about SDA, they were thinking about something along the these lines.
I say COOL. Face it folks, times are a changin'. -
plasma tv's are stating to become the norm. Most people buying a tv today are buying Plasmas. These kinds of products are perfect for this.
We have been selling the Yamaha sound bar and the Mirage version. Mirage uses a passive design for L C R. It's nice but you still have to have rears.
The yamaha uses a mad amount of drivers to get a 5.1 effect and it works. It can fool you into thinking you have rear speakers. It's not a replacement for a true higher end 5.1 audio system but it sure works well for people who are looking for the simple way. Not to mention people who have no wire access.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -

I have no problems with Polk introducing a 5.1 in 1 speaker.
I have problems with Polk using SDA technology in a 5.1 in 1 speaker.dorokusai wrote:It isn't an SDA, but utilizes the same theory. It will be at Polkfest and is one of the showcase demo's for you folks coming to the Hive.Vr3MxStyler2k3 wrote:I already know most of the specs on it - just want to see them on the official page in waiting
I'm sure it sounds great... I was just hoping the SDA technology would be put to different forms of usage - thats all. Slightly dissapointed.
Hi Guys,
With no information other than images posted on the Polk web site, would you guys mind sharing with us your source of this new "SDA" implementation?
Thanks.

Analog Digital Systems (ADS) has offered a product like this for some time now. Not to ridicule Polk in any way, shape, or form but those ex-**** rocket scientists at ADS are not exactly a bunch of slouches. They are quite capable of developing an outstanding product and bringing it to market.
I also seem to remember (MAYBE) Winslow Burhoe of EPI and AR fame has also brought something along the same lines to market.
I wouldn't expect Yamaha to bring anything but mid-fi to the party.

I would expound upon this subject, but I am not allowed.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -

Yup.....gag order was issued on this one."Its worked so far but we're not out yet."
"Hey big man let me hold a dollar" -
And now for something completely different......
George are the same people in place for ADS as in the late 80's early 90's? When I sold stereo equip back then we carried ADS speaks and their component line. I was always impressed, especially with the speaks. I wish I had bought some of the Atelier line of audio components back then. Very sleek and compact, slightly trying to emulate B & O chic-ness.
On a different note Niro Nakamichi has been trying to develop a speaker surround system that uses a sub and a single front speaker to emulate a full surround set-up. Neat idea but I have no idea how it works...if at all.
FWIW here's a link.

I'm not sure about the staff at ADS now Heiney, but I don't recall seeing anything in the trade news about the company undergoing any big personnel/management changes in the last few years. Atelier stuff was great. Those guys never marketed a bad product. I particularly liked the ADS 10, and 10-01 Digital Surround Processors, which were 6 channel capable (front, side, and rear channels) way ahead of anybody elses stuff. I had one of each, and sold one of them many moons ago to our own Bob McG.

Still have it G'man. Thanks.
I want Polk to stay in business in a very healthy way (make lots of money) so I'm all for letting them decide their offerings. They study the markets and trends, I don't and wouldn't want to.
That said, I just don't find "myself" interested in nor intrigued by speaker bars. -
Well said Bob.

Screw surround sound...long live stereo!
