I watched Pimp My Ride a little while ago and saw this car that was flipped with a bunch of MTX gear. The car was not to my taste, but the thing that caught my attention was that it had an MTX Jackhammer 22" sub. They said it weighs something like 329 or 389 pounds (can't remember which one, but it was definately in the 300+ range). They had the back of the sub taking up the whole back seat and held in place by some metal bracket. It was something else to see that :D .

I would never put anything like that in my car, but it was kind of cool to see it.

Thats freakin huge... after seeing a picture I now know why they called it a jack hammer.

I have only seen a couple episodes of pimp my ride. It drives me nuts what they do to some of these cars. I'd like to smack the guy who put "bling" rims on that beautiful mustang...

    100 db?? WTF??

Knowing MTX's reputation and the sheer size of that thing I wouldve expected more. Im sure it had to be the install.

Justin need to put better "rolleyes" smilies on here. The new one just isnt sarcastic enough. :D

That is what I was thinking, that the install probably was not to spec.

Funny you brought this up, I just watched it on MTV.

I though it was pretty cool. Useless and impractical but still pretty cool.

    Just aired on TV...

100 DB was when the warning light came on...

If you listen closely, he says he got it up to 130 db (Man that is louder than an airplane - installer)

the jackhammer only registered at 130db??

Is that accurate? I've seen a Digital Designs 1012 hit 130db with a 2.0 cu in dual port enclosure. (Can't remember what the heck the box design is really called, but its got an MDF board cutting up the interior volume into 2/3 and 1/3, and each separate chamber is ported, and a port is installed on the MDF divider).

I'm sure it would go louder...

But you wouldnt want to do that while you are in the car (rollseyes)...

Infact, I'm surprised he could have stayed in there at 130 DB.

100db is very loud, and it will damage your hearing within a hour, easy...

dizzy - if it didn't have the port in the divider, it'd be called a sixth-order bandpass, and those are massively loud and sound nothing like music. i dunno about the port in the middle, that probably makes it 7th or 8th order, which is just nuts...

My car has been hitting between 140.6- 141.8 db at the four shows I've hit this year. That's with a db212 bandpass box. A $379 box. And that's not painfull at all. Granted, the meter they used was cheap as ****, but I have a feeling the install wasn't all that great. Which would be a HUGE surprise coming out of WCC...

My readings were done at SLAP shows, Audiocontrol 190 sensor (which reads lower than the old mic, according to everyone), car closed, windshield placement.

140's with a couple of DB Juniors is very very very respectable. However your placed them/built the box/etc must have taken a good deal of thought and intuition. It's impressive. That'd be like doing 140's with the old school EX's... it's something to be proud of.

Far as the mtx sub outa MTV - i haven't seen the show - but i am not impressed by "huge" subwoofers... the 1000 - 1500 watt subs, ok, nice stuff, still in a 12 inch package, that's cool... but these 30 inch subs and **** - ugh - shoot me now.

100 db's is like a vacuum cleaner... jesus.

It's a pre- fab box in my hatch. No thought involved. And it's only getting about 500 watts. It's the ported design that kills it...

I agree, super woofers are cool to a point. Anything beyond a W7 or 9500 seems to be a waste.

Im getting tired or re-typing posts! For some reason, after I type it out, I scroll down to the FORUM JUMP and hit GO instead of hitting SUBMIT.

Anyways, I dont think the Jackhammer is really meant to be a "daily driver" sub but rather an attention getter. Kinda like a demo car.

140+ db with 500 watts with the DB212?!? Thats impressive as hell!

I can just imagine pulling up next to some dude in the lanes with a half dozen subs and a **** load of amps and hitting as much as he does with Polk's "entry level" subs and 500 watts! Priceless.

I know, everyone thought that box was just for SPL, but god were we surprised. They guy made a "street box" that hit 135db, and if you'd listen to music that has insane bass to begin with, like trance, it actually sounds good, meaning hte bass wasn't as sloppy as we thought it would be.

Another box, though, had a DD 3512 in a 5.0 cu in enclosure. Haven't heard that one yet but the owner was just plain nuts - he couldn't fit it in the trunk, so he put it on the rear seats. He's probably deaf by now.

wow, a 5.0 in^3 enclosure, that's beyond tiny :D but really, does trance bass count as music? when there's a bass guitar playing, does it still sound like a bass guitar? that's what i meant - i'm not making a judgement, to each his own, but that's what bandpass is known for, and if this guy made it work for him, more power to him...

Oh, yeah, well that's something I didn't test out on that set up. But the guys who brought the trance CDs (they didn't design the box, they just wanted to see how it would hold up) thought such a box would be cool for outdoor parties and stuff.

I just hope that their definition of "outdoor" parties don't count lawn parties - one 10" Velodyne in the living room would be far more practical.

Wow. Well like I said, I dont mind MTX coming out with this. It gets em noticed. Hell we're all talking about it.

And it performs well so its not just all show.

Ya do have to admit a 22" sub is pretty cool.

    WEAK... just plain weak.

what are you going to power it with... think about it - you need 6000 wrms. That's like 4 1501D's in twin strapped configuration. you'd be drawing upwards of 480 - 500 amps of current JUST TO PUSH ONE DAMN SUB.

what the hell are you supposed to push your highs with?

power requirements would probably be (for this sub, it's amps, and amps to push high power enough speakers up front so that it sounded musical) about 600 amps.

you're looking at 4 batteries so you can sit through a drive in movie or two - and a 300A alternator to recharge it up on the road.

Its not meant as an everyday sub. Its kind of like JBL's 6000 watt amp or Kicker's Solo X subs. Not gonna see one in every trunk.
