Okay, wimps, since you can't seem to fight my fights and stick up for yourselves when I question you about stuff, and you want your threads to all be soft, silky smooth non-discussions of closed-mindedness, I'm starting a thread wherein I will store my comments that otherwise would "hijack" your precious threads and get you all upset and stuff.

I'll start with this:
I might buy the occasional Nautica Shirt. I'm not a slave to trends. (aaharvel)
If you buy the occassional Nautica Shirt, you are. Why buy it? Off-price? Sale? Why not stop allowing companies to use you as advertising? Shouldn't they be paying you for that, instead of the other way around?

And then this:
(Emlyn quotes from Allmusic guide, about Nick Drake...) "...his pensive loneliness speaks directly to contemporary alternative rockers who share his sense of morose alienation" (and then, in a funny move, Emlyn says, "May check him out if I become morose," which made me laugh).
So, does his "pensive loneliness" really speak to you? Are you morosely alienated? Oh my god I can't stand how pretentious and goofy this whole sentence of description is. Who would listen to something like this? Must be real fun party music!

And here's another one:
pink floyd will never sell out their songs...maybe, maybe their images, but not the songs..imho (sda2mike)
They already have, just by being "Pink Floyd" beyond "Final Cut," by whoring the name when Roger left, and then even by appearing at this recent **** concert reunion thing. I mean, if they "got back together on stage for the first time in whatever many years" and they played something from... "Ummagumma," well THAT would have been an astonishing EFF YOU to the world of pop music, wouldn't it have been? Something to SEE. Here we are, it'd be saying, and we're going to play something GREAT that none of you know! HA! But they settled for **** hits, and who cares. Stay home, guys. Stop being whores. There is no Pink Floyd, and hasn't been since 1983 when Roger disbanded the band.

See how great this is? You guys go off and be proud of yourselves for chit chatting about nonsense, and I'll just reserve my comments for this here thread so you don't have to worry about reading anything that might upset up or cause you to think thru any of your decisions. You're safe from me now! :D

tell me why this "Selling out" is wrong (hoosier21)
Well, it isn't really "wrong." Artists can do whatever they want with their art. They have that right. I acknowledge that.

What sucks is that this changes the meaning of the art for art appreciators, with no recourse.

For me, I don't really care.

The Doors can start having their music appear in a slew of ads. And I will still listen to The Doors and love them for what they were and are.

But I will think less of the advertising geeks who -- like the movie remakers -- can't seem to think of original ways to sell things anymore. Remember "jingles"? "Plop plop, fizz fizz"? How come no one does that anymore?

Why do I want my art associated with some commercial thing?

It subtly and badly taints the art, in my opinion.

So, sell out! I don't care. But I won't buy into it.

    Agreed.

That "Dust in The Wind" SUV commercial they show every 15 minutes pisses me off.

    Micah,

Just because I don't agree with you on something doesn't make me close-minded.

I own a Nautica shirt myself, and I can guarandamntee you I'm not a slave to trends. I saw a shirt of theirs, I liked it, I bought it - has nothing to do with trends. That shirt could have just as easily said 'jackass' instead of 'Nautica' - I bought it because I liked it, not because I want to be a slave to some company and advertise their product. Unless we all wear uniforms and debadge our vehicles, we're all slaves of advertising.

just because roger waters LEFT pink floyd in 1985, didn't mean the end of pink floyd. the other 3 band members and millions of fans agree. only waters and some like you felt it was over after the final cut. a p.o.s. album, btw. he alone lost all creative interest. feeling that he was pink floyd, he naturally called the band dead. actually alot of people feel pink floyd died when syd barrett left, or was asked to...wonder how long they'd of lasted with syd at the helm?

    Ummagumma :D:D:D

Do you happen to like anything? Or are you just highly critical?

Who the hell said anything about Party Music?

So Micah... let me ask you. I buy Nike shoes the Huarache 2k5's simple because the ankle support is greater than anything else I could buy... this directly has to do with my health... have I fallin into a fad?

I buy Nautica dress pants for work... why? because they hold up forever and are very comfortable. Do you think the hundreds of people I interact with day to day think... wow nautica pants... what a sucker for brand names?

There's a point where it comes down to quality vs. cost... sure if the 10 dollar dress pants were as durable as the 60 dollar nauticas I'd buy them...

So if we are "buying into" trends when we buy things from these companies... wouldn't it be the same for record labels? I mean how many labels have there OWN clothing line? Quite a Few. So by playing so and so's music through my stereo at a stoplight I'm advertising that Company so it looks like I have "bought into" their fad. When in all reality I could care less what other crap the company has to offer... I spent 12 dollars on the cd for the music... not to be cool...

Just because you wear a brandname shirt that caught your eye doesn't mean you are trendy... just because you listen to a certain type of music doesn't classify you as being a gangster, punk, emo, goth, flip-flopper, skater, prep....

But if you want to stereotype the world away then have at it...

The big machine really runs everything... sure it's not cool but that doesn't mean I'm going to start singing to myself and sewing my own clothes...

Okay so joe blow bought the Nautica shirt... he don't care it's nautica; he just liked how it looked. But according to your post before he bought into the brand name.

You can like something and not sell out or buy into these companies' garbage.

The Final Cut was the last 'great' album from Pink Floyd. Everything after has gone downhill VERY rapidly. Fans? They aren't real fans. They are sheep.

So Roger was Pink Floyd? I don't geet the no PF after Roger argument either.

Were the Beatles whores after Pete got the boot? Ringo was truely a **** for taking the job, that is for sure.

Black Sabbath whores after Ozzy left?

One member does not make a band, there is no I in Band.

Bingo! Now we are getting somewhere.

If you like what you are hearing now, you don't like Pink Floyd, you like David Gilmour. Go buy Gilmour's self titled 1978 solo work. Just for grins, lets say track 2 - There's no way out of here.

Listen, listen closely. Name one non Waters PF album you couldn't stick that track RIGHT in the middle of, and be none the wiser. Why? Because you are listening to David Gilmour, not Pink Floyd.

    Welcome to the machine.

after the final cut, most fans...errrr...sheep, figured floyd was no more....the album and tour of 87-89 were unbelievable for a sheep like me....i did'nt miss roger one bit! yes he was a great writer, but in concert he was a real weak link! take a listen to some of the bootlegs floating around...i'm sure he got some ugly looks onstage from his band mates....most of the real tasty bass guitar parts that are on record, were played by gilmour anyway

The few cuts of "pre" Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd that I have heard, well it SUCKS. I have never done acid, so it might be great music for that, but to hear that garbage straight, I will pass.

I haven't said the non-Waters PF is bad - it's just not Pink Floyd.

I don't care for Waters solo work AT ALL (almost as painful to listen as Zappa), but he was essential to what the world knew as Pink Floyd. It is a formula people. Sum of the parts. It worked.

Van Halen for example, it just wasn't VAN HALEN without Diamond Dave. Did people still like it, and buy records? Sure - but it wasn't Van Halen.

AC/DC. I'll give Brian Johnson a TON of credit - he had some very large shoes to fill. I'll give them a nod for Back In Black, and maybe even Who Made Who - but AC/DC as we knew it died with Bon Scott.

maybe it was a time for a change...listening to the final cut, it's obvious waters was rehashing ideas from the wall song cycle...i never cared for his increasing political views and angst coming to the forefront of a band that was supposed to be ethereal...maybe the sum of the parts of the 4 floyds was greater than the 3, but the 3 were certainly strong enough to carry on with the pink floyd name....imho
