jl sub question

I had a shop try to sell me a 500W rms 10" JL (I think he said W6) and said it was dual 6 ohm voice coils (don't see it on their web site). How do I figure out how much power an amp would put to a 3 ohm load? Any other subs for around 200 that people have had a good experience with. I like rap, but need the base to be really clean. I had an alpine SWS 10 and it was pretty good.

I have a 10" Sound Splinter sub in my car. I am happy with the output and the sound. At the price they are selling, it will be difficult to find something better. Mine is in a .70 cubic foot enclosure and it is being pushed by my Kicker ZR240 (puts out around 360 watts RMS).

Maybe if polk would get off their butts & make a kick-**** sub(mainly directed at HT area), we wouldnt have to post questions about other manufactures:)

The Polk Momo subs are some of the best sounding subs on the market! Id easily put them up against most anything out there. And considering they cost less than $150 thats pretty damn impressive!

I dont know about the home audio market but theyve got the car audio sub nailed!

    Rider9er,

Did you read his post? He was talking about the polk ht subs. Have you ever heard a home audio sub from polk? No need to lash out at someone because they have a different opinion.

you've also never put less than twice their rated power to them... honestly, who other than you needs to dremel their grilles because the sub is hitting them...? :)

    Who's lashing out?

You trash a Polk product on a Polk forum you should expect somebody to defend them. Thats not lashing out, its responding to an opinion with another opinion.

The MM1 series did seem to have some quirks. The new MM2 series seems to have remedied those quirks cause we never seem to see anybody coming on here complaining about a blown MM2.

Now this is just my opinion, but I think that this sort of voice coil config is just a darn good strategy to sell their Slash amps...I think they were designed to produce the same output from 1.5-4ohms. That way you can use two w6's in parallel wired to one 1000/1.

Not really. The Slash amps can work at all kinds of impedance loads. This is simply JL giving their customers more flexibility in systems.

JL says that the 3-ohm thing allowed for the best sound, and has nothing to do with the amps driving it... which is good, i suppose, because i don't want my speaker engineers worrying about amps, it's the amp engineer's job to make my speakers work :)

There is absolutley nothing wrong with posting on 10 day old posts.

It was just weird somebody would drudge up an old post just to post "me too", or "+1".

Not saying you cant do that, its a free country, just that it looked a little unusual and Bill asked about it.

I know I'm jumping in here a little late but I have to totally agree with him. Now I've never personally owned one but I did sell them for quite a while and had many come back. We even blew floor models because of that damn grill. You try to break a sub in gently and it still hits the grill and causes all kinds of issues. I love the way they sound but even without the grill, they love to pop with 75-125% of the power recommended. Sorry, but I'll pass.

We saw it a bunch on here. We'd get somebody every few days complaining about a blown MM124 or whatever. The new Momos seem to be a different story. There have been hardly any complaints about one of the MM2's giving out. Plus I think they sound better than the MM1's.

1st Gen Original Momo Sub = various little flaws.

2nd Gen Original Momo Sub = bad surrounds on first few shipments, and apparently they were allergic to Cody. In his defense though, I never felt very comfortable watching one move in and out, to extents that "felt" not kosher to me ... just gave me the heebie jeebies. But, they were very nice, and I do think they could handle well above their power ratings.

1st Gen Baby Momo's = what the hell was wrong with them? I never saw any go bad.

2nd Gen Baby Momo's = there's a second Gen baby momo ?? when the hell did that happen... u ****!

    JL = absolute garbage

Home theatre subs by any company = why bother? Take an Infinity Kappa, or a beefy Original Momo, or some other nice 300 - 400 watt rms 10 - 12 inch car sub, build a nice sealed or ported box to specifications, carpet the box or vaneer (spelling) it with wood trim, buy a 300 - 500 watt at 4 ohm RMS plate amplifier from www.partsexpress.com and build that **** up. It will 1) cost less than anything else you're going to buy and 2) sound really damn nice especially in your home theatre system when you want that nice GRUMBLE with movies.
